No one here cares about men hugging each other or people riding horses. Keep it on your own board.

I cannot remember the last time I saw equestrian/wrestling on tv or receive any type of recognition whatsoever. And keloland will do a story on anything. Mostly 20 minute weather segments with a 7 day forcast of sunny and 70. Does ESPN even cover/announce the national champion when it happens each year? If so I have never seen it.
Although if a school could create a sport of men hugging each other while riding horses it would be state for sure.

I have a buddy who is a big Iowa wrestling fan, so I can say that at least Big Ten matches are televised by ESPNU on occasion. I want to say that last year the national championships last year were televised on ESPN2, but it was during March Madness so they have nothing else to broadcast as long as CBS has that deal. Equestrian on the other hand...no idea what that fully entails. People ride horses apparently. I can't imagine it is appealing to my tastes, I went to a couple SDSU rodeos the last two years and was bored out of my mind. I grew up on a farm and still can't wrap my head around these sports at all.

Big Ten network regularly broadcasts wrestling meets. Don't act like the sport is some freakish sport because it is not. Almost every high school in the midwest has a wrestling program and alot of people in South Dakota take it very seriously. Alot of you around here treat wrestling, hockey, soccer and other sports the same way, unless it is football or basketball it is not relevant. Simply not true. There are alot of great sports out there. Wrestling just received some heavy coverage this past week on one of the SF stations because Augustana was headed to NCAA D2 Nationals or something like that.
I know it is SDSU and we are conditioned to not like anything they do but this move to the Big 12 is good for them and good for the state of South Dakota and any kid who has aspirations of D1 wrestling in a big timne conference. Instead of ripping on SDSU for having wrestling, UND for having hockey, or NDSU for having the success they are having we should pull our heads out of our butts and do something about it. I see that UND is ranked #1 in the nation in hockey this week, Omaha is #5. Hanging in the top 10 with schools like Boston College, Boston University, and Denver among others. No Big Ten team in sight either. Other programs are making splashes in sports on a national stage and we are, well, just hanging around.
I'd like to see USD, once it gets done with the arean project and is on more secure footing, expand its sports offerings. I think there are tremendous opportunities in soccer, hockey, and lacrosse to make a big name for ourselves on a regional and national scene. Of course that might be too forward thinking.

I am not saying it isn't good for their school. I'm saying the USD fan forum is not the place to be posting it. I would doubt too many USD supporters care about SDSU wrestling. If it was about a USD recruit wrestling or something to that nature, sure. If you are looking to add a sport, we need baseball back before any of the others.

Title to this section is "Off Topic Stuff -- a thread for non-USD items." I'm old enough to remember when baseball was a varsity sport at USD -- and generally the U had very competitive teams in most years in spite of the unpredictable spring weather. Back in the day, watching USD baseball at Prentis Park on a nice 70-degree day (when much of the state was having 50-degree weather) was a lot of fun.

Here I'll explain everything you need to know about equestrian in one sentence. Equestrian is a sport involving a large number of women therefore balancing the title nine scholarship requirements for women created by the high number of football scholarships for men. Understand now? Glad I could be of help.

It's sad to say but more and more wrestling programs are going to fall victim to cuts in athletic departments nationwide. 355 college wrestling programs that have been shut down nationwide as a result of Title 9 according to astudy I read recently. I won't get into how many men's gymnastics, swimming & diving, and baseball programs have been cut. The reality is that the boys sports have to pay for the girls sports and if the boy sport doesn't make any money than it will eventually not exist anymore. The issue at NSU is lack of funding for the wrestling program. My question is how much funding is given to women's programs that also generate little revenue or have poor competitive results? Are those women's programs on the chopping block as well?
Title 9 is a failed policy when looking at it from the perspective of what it has done to men's collegiate programs across this country.

www.si.com/more-sports/2011/01/20/delaware-crosscountryThis article is from a few years ago but I think it speaks to what this discussion thread had turned into. Title 9 in theory is a good idea but football is destroying all other lesser men's sports. Wrestling, baseball, soccer, etc will continue to be cut because every year more and more money if put towards football programs. Because as the article says, "Life without a 16th defensive back is no life at all."

But the reality is that football at most institutions is a revenue generating sport that makes the money that subsidizes the rest of the programs. Investment needs to be made in that sport in order to keep it competitive with other football programs and generating revenue and supporting the women's sports. You can't have it both ways. You can't cut money from football to give to other sports and expect it to remain competitive and bringing in the needed revenue to support the other sports.
