I was thinking the same thing. We are getting killed on the defensive end. It is mostly inside but I don't feel it is all due to lack of talent. We have plenty of talent on this team but to expect them to play that kind of zone against good teams is tough. For a zone to even have a chance of working (zone is the poorest choice of defense) the players have to have almost psychic ability to read there team mates mind. It take excellent communication and team effort. With a team made up of players from all over the area it is almost impossible to get that kind of gelling early on, if ever. Zone also kills your rebounding game by having everybody out of position and no body's to box out. When you have the talent that this team has play some man to man with help on "D" and run some good plays to isolate your three point shooters pass the ball in the paint to draw defenders in and back out for a good thee point shot on offense.

26-15. Shooting 78% right now. Could have used some of that the last couple games.

79-66 coyotes. Sounded like a pretty good game for the coyotes. Gruis had a heck of a game.

Congratulations to the coyote men! Sounded like they were much more in sync. Did sound like Gruis played one heck of a game as well as several others. I wished I could have seen the game to see if the defense was better or the offense of ULM was no threat. Either way a win is a win.

Saw all three games this weekend, & coach made some adjustments to the zone, & it worked better even though ULM shot poorly from the arc. Guiris played well & will end up with over 1000 pts in his career as he improves. not a shot blocker like Cain, but rebounds well.
Westbrook needs to play 40 minutes a game as he is the best offensive player we have. Our shooters ( Thomas & Louie ) did not play well until the third game.
Kendall does have too many turnover's for a point guard but he is our quickest defender & we might have to live with that. Coach did keep him on the bench when we had the lead late in the game vs ULM.

So why did Bouie start the other night and now doesn't play at all today? Bartling didn't play at all today either. He hasn't played much since they took him off redshirt. Gruis really played well today. He is doing very well for being a true freshman. It would be nice if he was a little bigger though. Hopefully he will develop some more size this off season.

I finally got the chance to go over USD's games this past weekend. I kind of just spent most of the weekend with family, so I didn't pay much attention to them.
One thing that is really bothering the Coyotes is fouls, mainly foul trouble. USD has allowed opponents to go to the line 125 times so far this year, 30 more times than themselves. The good news is that teams aren't completely taking the opportunity and only shooting .688 from the line.
USD is having its own problems when it gets to the line. USD is only hitting a just better than Shaq-like .622 from the free throw line. For a team that consists mostly of guards, that's not exactly encouraging. USD isn't exactly drawing that many fouls either because they are settling for the outside shot since they have hoisted 138 three-pointers already. Charlie Westbrook is the one who is most consistently attacking the basket. The other guards need to do that more, and they have the ability to do it to.
Trevor Gruis did something inside for USD and Rico did a bit the game before. Gruis is a true freshman, so he will definitely have his bumps, but I am guessing he will be starting most of the games from here on out.
Playing time has been up and down for some players. Kendall Cutler and Westbrook are the only two who have started all 6 games. Thomas and Krogman have been inconsistent from three-point range and their D is lacking at times. Cutler is very energetic and he does have 18 turnovers, but that's only one more than Westbrook. He is only averaging 3 TOs a game, which is about normal for a PG. USD is going to have to live with that because of his defense.
Mitchell Bouie's time will vary because of his lack of size and he is more of guy who plays down low. With USD's already lack of size, it's hard to find him consistent minutes.
I am surprised about the lack of minutes Conrad Krutwig is getting. He was a high-touted guy I thought coming out last year, and saw some up and down minutes, but he seems to be barely scratching the line-up, and he has some size to him.
Bartling's minutes will be up and down considering how raw he is and since they wanted to redshirt him.
It will be interesting to see if the zone defense keeps getting tweaked each game depending on the opponent. I don't know if man-to-man is the way to go though because of USD's lack of height. Honestly, zone D and man to man D is going to have major problems with USD's lack of height.
