The Drake game was very encouraging for a number of reasons. First, we beat a team handily that we should have, and did it in a very convincing style. Secondly, Wesley opened up the play book and extended the field and Saeger responded. Third, and I said this in previous posts, our defense is vastly improved, and they just might be good enough to keep us in all games we play. And of the offense can be opportunistic, that would be a good thing.
But there are two other things I'm seeing that I'm extremely enthused about. First, the coaches are really interacting with the kids, and that is making a difference. They are jacked up, they have smiles on their faces, and they are into the game. Secondly, we have a lot of leadership on the field. Lage, Shufford, and others are willing this team to play hard all the time. I haven't seen that in a very long time. We have some really strong leaders on this team, and that will pay dividends once we get into the Valley. They wanted the shutout yesterday, and when we stopped both their field goal attempts, there was genuine enthusiasm from the team that we held them and thwarted the kicks.
We are starting to believe in ourselves, and that's the key to this season. There is confidence and enthusiasm, I like what I see so far.

It was great to see us obliterate the team we were supposed to beat. Even when we were up several touchdowns the team gave their all and stopped those FG attempts, that really speaks to the effort this team is putting into the game. The defense is looking immensely improved over last year. Heck, every single facet of the team looks improved over last year. We have a confident team that is deeper, more experienced, and - get this - HEALTHIER than we have seen in a few years.
We have a chance for a real statement victory against Youngstown State on Dakota Days. Our guys are believing in themselves now, but to get a win streak going and start conference play at 1-0 will really get this train rolling.
