I don't think the name is that bad. It's much better than at least half the names being suggested. If they take after what the Black Hawks do in the NHL maybe they can keep some close semblance to the logo they already have.

Do you really think they are about to adopt a logo resembling a native american warrior after the twenty years of fiasco they just went through?

Yeah, no way. Picture the logo for some middle school girl's soccer team. That's what UND will end up with.

If they are called the fighting Hawks and not the Sioux than who is to really complain.

Hostile and abusive imagery. You really think they will go down that road?
The logo will be bland, just like the name.

Who could really complain though. Doesn't Notre Dame use an Irish Guy in a bad light. No one (or at least not a significant effort) is pushing to get them to change their logo. Why should the same happen with the Sioux. I don't understand the hypocrisy in this argument. One totally offensive logo causes a wide spread uproar yet another very similar concept is barely looked twice at. It's alway easy to be an outsider and say that North Dakota should change their logo and nickname but those people aren't the ones being forced to change their school's logo and nickname. If an animal rights activist group tried to have USD change their logo I am sure many people would be reluctant to see it go. Animals have feelings too ya know.

Agreed that there isn't a huge difference between Fighting Sioux and Irish (or Seminoles), but this one has already been settled in court

Well, except for the fact I have yet to meet a person of Irish decent that is offended by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Actually, I don't think I have met too many people of Irish decent that are not Notre Dame fans. They pretty much embrace it, to the point where Notre Dame has played games over in Ireland and has that Shamrock Series deal.
North Dakota Fighting Sioux, not so much. There has been animosity over that name for years.
Point is that Irish people apparently love the Fighting Irish, just like Norwegians seem to have an affection for the Vikings, and the Seminole and Ute tribes have given their consent to FSU and Utah. Some people of Sioux heritage did not like the Fighting Sioux and would not give consent, hence, it is gone. This part has been covered ad naseum, what is new is how freaking bland and uninspiring the name Fighting Hawks is. Wow.

Given the current amount of Political Correctness sweeping the country I do foresee a time when animal mascots could be persona non grata. If good ol' Charlie Coyote has to go - will we be prepared?
Some possibilities:
SD "Rushmores" - the tourism folks would love it and kinda fits for football at least; SD "Sandfords" - go for the bucks here; SD "Corn" - kernals already taken - Corn Council would have to pony up - sounds better than "beans" (soybeans) SD "Wind" - After the past two days, need I say more? Could be the butt of some jokes though.
Okay, just having some fun and probably only amusing myself here.
