I think the thing that I will enjoy most about the "Fighting Hawks" rejoining the Dakota 4 is the acrimony it will generate in Fargo. Rivalries are part of what makes college athletics fun, and as much as the Bizun like to downplay UND's affect on them, it's clear that feathers have been ruffled. Game on. I completely agree. I know that the schedule makers will have UND go to NDSU first in the major sports, but that first time UND beats NDSU (I'll guess the first time NDSU travels in MBB & FB) then Fargo may riot. Can't wait.

The riot will be saved for football.

As a person that has watched the Bison this “golden age” of UND athletics has been fun. I don’t think NDSU fans care one way or another about UND because it’s so much fun to watch the platter of crow served up weekly at UND garnished by their celebration of the moral victory and the quality loss. I for one look forward to their entry into the valley and Summit next year. For now they are an easy win. I’m sure everyone enjoyed the 45-7 schellacking. That loss has of course been nullified by “The Injuries” that sidelined an obvious national championship team as proved by their 37-16 moral victory in Utah. Yes It was a moral victory. Besides it was a quality loss setting them up as a clear top ten choice.
The only problem with the mighty land grants is their success at this D1 athletic venture. There is a real good chance the National championship game will be all MVFC and all Dakota. Couple great games first.

They didn’t get a first down until the fourth quarter or something You may remember that was the year they were robbed of the playoffs. Just ask them. They had the quality loss at NDSU, among others, speaking on their behalf too.

Our younger sister from the north is about to get dumped by NDSU for the Bison's old girlfriend from Grand Forks. NDSU might still see them on the side but the jealously from Brookings will be unbearable being that they won't have what they call their true rival paying full attention to them anymore. There will be a couple of good siblings to continue to build relationships with and than there is that jealous nagging sister that just won't leave anyone alone.
UND will be a force in athletics soon enough. Their women's team should be a solid addition right off the bat. Men's hoops will get there and football will get there in time. Despite what some Jacks or Bison fans may say UND is too good of an institution to stay down very long.

I don’t think that will happen. The Marker is too big. Besides they will also play SDSU and USD as will NDSU. All big games.
I’m not too sure about UND ever being a force either. There are no D1 hockey schools with unds model doing well. Main is as close as it gets.
I don’t know what the promotions will be but the Marker is golden for now.

I will give you that the marker will matter but 10 years from now NDSU and their fan base will look towards the north for the game that really matters the most to their fans and the state of North Dakota. SD would be a much bigger rival to the Jacks if they would ever take something away from them that matters and that has really only happened once in women's basketball since the end of the D2 days. The Coyotes barely ever beat the Jacks so why would SDSU consider us their biggest rival. Once the Coyotes take something away from the Jacks and make it really sting for their fan base than the rivalry will heat up as big as ever. If the Coyote men can beat them in the Summit League Tourney final that would really sting for them. Until something like that happens the rivals from a competitive nature still won't quite have that edge.

They wanted their hockey program to be the only D1 program in the Dakotas, and most of their fans still probably don't care that the other sports moved up. Your 4 unprovoked posts talking smack about UND really reinforces the thought that natural, in-state rivalries will always be most prominent.

I don’t know that they are unprovoked since it is a thread about UNDs nickname. The crow joke was funny, part of an on-going conversation and has historical fact behind it. They do eat a lot of crow.
The idea that the in-State rivalries will be as they were in the old days remains to be seen. They will be big games. Probably the best evidence to the arc of the future is how it’s been going between USD and SDSU?
There was a huge fracture when the Land Grants made the move that has taken 15 years to tape over. I don’t think it was a random accident UND was last to fall in line behind the others. There is a lot of indifference in Fargo too, but not in Grand Forks. Fargo is their super bowl.
But hockey is the point. Their sports model de-emphasizes football and basketball in favor of hockey. A fan shouldn’t expect any more success at this budget level than any other comparable programs. They will save a ton of money in travel expenses now that they have quit the Big Sky so they might not eat as much crow as they used to and might even get competitive from time to time but the history of UND, at least for the foreseeable future was written in the Big Sky. They did not do well against the top teams in football and were competitive in a weak B.B. conference.
I don’t watch basketball but the SUs had no problem with them. Has USD played them?

Seems like NDSU fans think that every game against them is the other team's Super Bowl? I've seen this on Bisonville many times...

This makes me wonder how may Super Bowls some of the bison fans will claim to have won. The last time I am aware of a Bison super bowl was in Iowa. Iowa fans embraced the idea it was the NDSU Super Bowl and it was! The last known und Super Bowl was in Fargo and they lost miserably. I guess NDSU can claim that too although it was their Super Bowl deceleration in the Fabulous Fargo Dome. What a thrill for those Grand Forks kids! thats 2-0 for NDSU Super Bowls that I am aware of. Oh yea Kansas State fans said it was the NDSU Super Bowl too. That makes it 3-0 in Super Bowls for The NDSU Bison. UK & Iowa State didn’t elevate themselves to superbowls.

The thing is ever since UND quit playing NDSU it was obvious that NDSU was just fine without them. Look at the records of each team since UND quit. Include, wins, losses and attendance. Bison fans, like most fans in North Dakota, slowly lost interest in them. The 2015 game was an after thought for Bison fans. Not so for grand forks and the fargo forum. They did all they could to invoke the old days but NDSU fans aren’t biting. They will keep it up in their attempt to hoist und into relevance it’s all they talk about. Will it work? Your guess is as good as mine. I think NDSU gets moved up. For NDSU fans UND means nothing more than a W for the time being. Oh yea, and the butt of a few harmless jokes.
