I've been watching for reaction to the SD Board of Regents 11/5/15 announcement of the hiring of a new general counsel. I presume the Regents preferred to have its in-house attorney to have experience that translates to advising the Board of Regents but I am disappointed the Regents didn't hire a grad of the State's law school. The guy they hired is a Notre Dame Law grad.
Sure, bringing in new ideas etc is a nice concept but there are a number of well qualified lawyers in South Dakota who are USD Law grads who could do top-shelf work for the Regents. I think it smells the Regents didn't search out and attract a USD Law Grad. But, it seems this hasn't been an issue for anyone else (at least no one has commented on it in any sources that's I've read).
The Regents should be running a system that prepares people for such positions. I think the system does that. Maybe the Regents don't feel that way. Dumb move.

How much of the BOR is made up of graduates of BOR schools? If an outsider is the best applicant for the position then I really have no issue.

I'm kind of with jackjd on this one. For a position like the general counsel of the BOR of South Dakota, I think we ought to make an effort to take care of our own. Perhaps they didn't have any qualified local applicants to choose from so they had to settle for a Notre Dame grad. I type this as a proud graduate of the USD law school so I may be biased.

I admit I don't know the facts...perhaps no qualified applicants with USD Law degrees applied BUT there are many great lawyers in this state with USD Law degrees who would do an excellent job in that position. It seems an effort should have been made to attract those applicants. Problem is, I don't know what efforts, if any were made but it bothers me that a USD Law grad isn't in that position. When I first read about the hire, I just thought it was a negative reflection that the BOR didn't hire from an institution it oversees -- not a bad reflection on the law school, but it put the BOR is a negative light. Oh well, won't lose any sleep over it...just looks dumb to me.

How much of the BOR is made up of graduates of BOR schools? If an outsider is the best applicant for the position then I really have no issue. All of the regents have at least an undergrad degree from a South Dakota public university. There are three Regents with law degrees, one from USD Law, one from Hamlin and one from Georgetown. Bios of the Regents are on the website: www.sdbor.eduI can assume they hired the best applicant. I'm disappointed because a concerted effort should have been made to get a very good South Dakota Law grad as one of the applicants. Philosophically, I can be easily talked into thinking bringing in an outsider once in a while is a good idea for many jobs. But, in this case, I make a distinction because of the control of the Regents over the universities. [Not offered as an analogy: It bothers me a little if we have a teacher in a K-12 public-school whose own children are home schooled. Just makes me shake my head.] Well, I'll wish the guy well -- after all, he's a new resident and I suppose there's something good about that.

There is a history between the new counsel and the Exec. Director of the BOR as they worked together for the Idaho regental system.
