Andrew Van Ginkel will be transferring to Iowa Western. I am not sure if he is already gone or will be transferring at the end of the semester. Here's my in depth analysis: this sucks.

Worst case scenario is he ends up back in the valley after a year at the JUCO level. scary possibility.

The word is he would like to go bigger and play for a P5 school.

No doubt this kid wants to be on a bigger stage. I'm getting some Jake Thomas "what could have been" flashbacks.

The more I think about this it's a big mistake. The Jake Thomas saga definitely comes to mind.

The more I think about this it's a big mistake. The Jake Thomas saga definitely comes to mind. Dusty Stamer also comes to mind. There must be something wrong between him and USD. If not, this could end up being an extremely selfish decision. It is tough to stomach being one of the only Division 1 schools that gave him a shot. One year and he is gone to a JUCO school, presumably to not lose a year of eligibility. There must either be issues with the new coaches/teammates or someone else behind the scenes that put this in his ear. It feels like a betrayal, but it is almost best that he transfers now. No one person should be bigger than the program and the university. The sun will rise tomorrow, and I have trust in this new staff to find a suitable replacement to Van Ginkel.

The more I think about this it's a big mistake. The Jake Thomas saga definitely comes to mind. It's a risk for sure, but a route that successful players have traveled in the past. Most successful example in my recent memory would be Cam Newton going Florida-JUCO-Auburn. The future is unwritten but going JUCO in my mind likely lowers what odds he had of going pro someday and is not going to help his pursuit of a degree either.

I turned out so well for Dusty Stamer too.
These guys need to understand a couple of things. First is that there is a reason you didn't get a full offer from a big time FBS program right out of high school. Second is that as good as you think you are, when you get to that level everyone is that good. 6-4 230lb defensive ends who are explosive are a dime a dozen at FBS schools. In fact, that is pretty much a minimum requirement.
I hope it works out well for the young man and that he gets his dreams fulfilled. I just don't think that is going to happen though.

Cam Newton had offers from every big time FBS school there was coming out of high school. This isn't the case with AVG.

Newton would have stayed at Florida if he would not have been dismissed for stealing a computer.

I have a really hard time believing this isn't a grade issue or something like that. You don't go to JUCO to hope that you can possibly find bigger offers. He has a resume at USD. If there are bigger offers out there, then go to FBS now, sit out your year, train with the team, learn the defense and be ready to play for the next two years. It doesn't make sense to go to JUCO just so you don't have to sit out - this might as well be sitting out because you are not learning the defense of your future school, you aren't building chemistry with teammates and, despite the great success that IWCC has had, it does not have the strength and conditioning program that you would find at a D-1 university, let alone an FBS university. Going from FCS to FBS is not unheard of - in fact, it is becoming more common all the time. EWU's QB went to Oregon last season. This season Oregon is getting Montana State's QB. A couple years ago Nebraska got WIU's kicker. I am sure there plenty of other examples. As to Thomas, I am pretty sure he got decent minutes with Marquette - a school back in his home state. With Stamer, his grades were a problem and attending school at Southest CC in Lincoln was necessary. See below: www.dailynebraskan.com/stamer-s-speed-takes-him-to-top-choice/article_34280ec1-da32-5868-8b8f-0587c576cc21.htmlAt the end of the day, Stamer's impact ended up being in track, not football. I'd say becoming an All American made his decision a good one. Although that is with the benefit of hindsight - it was a bad decision as it related to football. www.huskertrackcamp.com/hidden-matt-martin-bio.cfmIf this is simply a move to earn an FBS offer, then it is very flawed logic.

I really doubt he is having academic issues. On his profile, it says he was on the MVFC honor roll last year.

Great point Cuz about going to FBS now rather than JUCO. I agree sitting out a year and learning the defense and coaches would be better than playing JUCO. Only thing I can think of is that he does not have any offers from a FBS team that he wants to go to, or grades. If grades are not the problem, and he does not have a FBS offer, it makes little sense.
*Edit - looks like it has nothing to do with grades. He felt with the coaching changes it was time to try and play with the big boys in FBS. This per a NW Iowa guy on the State board who knows AVG and the area well. Still a tough one to swallow, but good luck to AVG. I hope to see him play for Iowa in the future.

He does not have the option of transferring to a D1 program right now. He was on scholarship and has to finish the academic year before he could transfer to another D1, and then sit out the year. If you go JUCO you can transfer immediately and play, but you have to stay there 1 academic year and graduate before you can go back to D1.
