This is per a poster on the SDSU board, who I believe is a high school coach in NW Iowa
"Nothing at all to do with academics, so those that started this rumor you might want to stop it before that gets on social media. He's always felt he was an FBS player. And now with the cleaning house at Vermillion he thought this was the time to try it. He lost his position coach and I think that was the last straw. Andrew is a great kid and we would be proud of him if he wore Jack blue. Who knows what will happen at Iowa Western. He will certainly get FBS offers, but maybe SDSU has another shot at him. I know that Iowa has been a place he's wanted to attend, but I have not talked to him directly the past couple months. The rumor of him leaving for Iowa Western is true, but it is not for academic, law breaking or behavior. I wish him the best at Iowa Western and understand his decision especially after the coaching changes."

So technically he will be able to go to a FBS in the spring next year and get another half year at the program before the fall/football semester.

This sucks. It takes some big stones to do what he's trying to do, giving up a good opportunity (tearing up the MVFC) to have a CHANCE to make it on the field somewhere bigger in 2 years. I really hope he didn't make a mistake.

Wow. Gone and this happens.... Cant fault the kid if this move is to play at big time FBS... If not what is the point when it is proven you can get a shot at the pros through USD?

It's hard to swallow in light of all the positive developments in the program as of late. AVG was poised to be the face of the defense and has demonstrated such a tremendous upside. The hard part is he's turning his back on his teammates -- and that's unfortunate. Nevertheless, it's now next man up!

Have to say that Goyotes' post above with the excerpt from the SDSU board made me chuckle. Especially, "but maybe SDSU has another shot at him." No way VG makes this decision only to end up at State. (emphasis on only) Presumptuous much?

Andrew Van Ginkel will be transferring to Iowa Western. I am not sure if he is already gone or will be transferring at the end of the semester. To the people saying it is grade issues, coaching issues, selfish and a betrayal to his teammates: Andrew Van Ginkel was one of the most heartfelt players on the team. Never heard anything bad about him, never cocky to other players or coaches. One of the greatest players I've played with. Always looking out for others and helping his brothers on and off the field. Had an honor to meet and play with him. When he was deciding whether or not to leave, multiple coaches and players had/have his back so for people to say it's a betrayal, you are all wrong. This kid deserves the world and we all wished him the best when he left. It's a shame to see all the comments and hear the things people are saying and assuming about him. Jeremy Hoeck @jhoeck 24 Oct 2015 Great moment in the USD press conference: DL Andrew Van Ginkel was walking out, Joe Glenn says to him, "Your heart is as big as this town." He'll be missed but good luck to him in the future after JUCO. Ball out. I understand why and you deserve the best man. Good luck with everything. Yotes forever.

Everyone here supports his decisions. Don't read into it too much. He has been thinking about this for months and has had many people whether it was teammates, family members, coaches (including Bob N. & Wesley B.) approval.

He may be a good kid and all, but he is turning his back on USD. Every situation is unique and a coaching change is definitely something to take into account. I hope things work out for him, but just wish he would have given the new staff a chance.

IT seems like alot of us (myself included) are selfish in situations like this. Gotta agree with and respect what Yotes96 said. As fans, its only a big story to us because of how good he is. We dont make comments about people being selfish or turning their back on a team when its a player that plays 2 snaps a game. Good luck to AVG, let him chase his dream. Next man up as yotefanforever said.

This is one of the few bad things about playing lower than FBS level football. When some kids have a lot success early at the D3, D2, FCS level, it makes them think "What if?....maybe I got over looked.....if I only had a chance at a bigger school". I get the "chase your dreams" mentality, but I would have a hard time being so supportive as yotes96. I had former team mates make the same choice, and while I would never discourage them or wish them to fail, I was not "gung ho" about guys leaving for what they saw as a "bigger" and "better" opportunity.
Its growing to be a bigger and bigger problem with my generation and those younger than me of realizing that you made a commitment, be a man and honor the commitment that you made. Whether its in picking a school and keeping your word during recruitment, to staying at a school through adversity, to marriage and parenthood, so on and so forth. You made a choice and a commitment when you chose to come to Vermillion. I am disappointed that he chose not to honor his commitment to his school, his new coaches, and more importantly his teammates.
All that said....I wish AVG nothing but the best and hope he sees great success in his future.

I think this is the first time I haven't agreed with the posting majority on these boards. I don't support his decision. Is it selfish of me? Absolutely it is. But if it was always his intention to play for Iowa, then he should have taken his shot right out of highschool. Whether it was a walk-on opportunity or JUCO. The sky was the limit in terms of the success he could have had here. I keep hearing people say they hope it works out for him, but my honest opinion is, I really don't care if it works out or not.

If coaches can pursue their dreams by moving onto the next best job why shouldn't players be able to do the same? Maybe he was committed to the last coaching staff but did not feel a connection with the current staff. I don't know his reason for leaving but I appreciate everything you did this past year. good luck AVG
