We heard strong messages from Abbott and Herbster about their commitment to building the football program and it appears they are keeping their word. Most of the new assistant coach's salaries are posted and the average salary for the top 7 is $63K. This does not include Nielson. This average is a bit of an estimate because one of the top assistants' salary was not listed so I did an interpolation based on coaches with similar responsibilities. To give some perspective, I did a similar look up for SDSU and their top 7 assistants averaged $51K. Now I will be the first to admit this isn't exactly a scientific study, and the average numbers could be off by a few grand but the progress in funding USD coaching salaries is significant.
Also, I heard from a person not involved with USD that Nielson was given a 3.5 year contract. He is someone I trust and cited believable sources. The BOR apparently consented, or at least didn't stop it. This was probably the final agreement that had to be worked out and caused the delay for the formal announcement.

There has been a inaccurate "belief" that multi-year contracts were not allowed under state law and that is not true. I know I've heard that more than once from alums close to the administration and I believed them. Well, it was a regental policy/rule that multi-year contracts were not granted. Herbster and/or Abbott made the request during the hiring process to be able to offer Coach Nielson a 3 year contract and that request was granted. The only formality was that there needed to be an official board vote on the matter and that has already happened at the last meeting or will be happening at the next meeting. It's my hope now that we've got one multi-year contract approved, maybe we can get our basketball coaches the same sort of contract.

It is very clear that the administration is fully dedicated to making all sports that we offer at USD a success. Football was the last program needing to be addressed and now it has been in a big way. The success of the new coaching staff remains to be seen but we are investing significantly more money into salaries than we were previously and I get the impression that DakotaDome upgrades are to be incoming after this upcoming season (not counting the new video board set to be up ahead of this 2016 season). Typically your results will be based upon what you invest, what you put in you get out. We have decided to put a lot more into this. I can't wait to see where things go from here.

I'd like to see Mick follow-up on the contract years. Nice job by USD.

Everything that Nielsen has done so far has definitely seemed impressive. How he has handled himself, how he has recruited etc. There is a long ways to go from where Nielsen is now to where he needs to get to at USD. The time of the year that fans look through their school colored goggles with most intensity is during recruiting season. There are no big hits being made, no last second drives being constructed and no wins or losses going on the board during this time of the year. Almost every fan is a homer during recruiting season. How good a recruit ends up being is so much more than just when they put the ink to the paper. They can be as talented as they come but if they don't have the proper direction when they come to a school it may not matter. I will take a slightly less talented recruit if that recruit is well coached up and knows how to make themselves better under a coaches guidance overall. Can that recruit translate to be a successful team player on a winning team. I would rather have an extremely talented team that is also coached up to the max but if I had to choose one over the other I am taking the well coached and developed kid over the pure talent that ends up not reaching their full potential and/or doesn't gel with their team.
Bob Nielsen should be judged on what he does in the standings and so many Coyote coaches have failed in that area. This is in no way a diss on Neilsen because I like him and really like him based on first impressions. It certainly seems like his surrounding staff borders on best ever in USD football history based on initial perspective. We will see if it plays out that way because game in and game out (on average) the Yotes have crumbled in the face of the MVFC teams they have played.
I am extremely excited for Nielsen and Coyote football and will give him every benefit of the doubt unless he gives me reason not to. Despite my extreme excitement or Coyote football I will always wear my objective glasses and see things for how they really are. These recruits seem like damn talented players that can fill the shoes of the players that will carry this team to greater heights. This offense is gonna be awesome. 5 wide receivers from this class should give any Coyote fan the hints they need to realize that this is gonna be an offense that isn't gonna be afraid to air it out. I believe if there is a weakness for the average defense in the Valley it would be defending the pass and I think Nielsen will make it a nightmare for opposing coaches. Make them worry about what you're doing instead of worrying about what they are doing. Be proactive and not reactive. That is exactly what I want from this new regime. It's time to starting kicking some ass.

I hope the current players on the Coyote roster are as impressed and excited about the new staff and energy as I am. Coach Bob has a quiet confidence about him. Cannot wait to go watch some practices and scrimmages. Time for the Coyote program to take the next step. Win the trifecta - NDSU UNI SDSU.

Same here. Completely agree obc! Was it fun? What did they do? Very fun. Ideal crowd of maybe 40? All HP members getting rewarded for their support, which is great. Free beverages, nice food spread. Coach introduced and thanked the staff. Showed highlights of and introduced the new recruits. Lots of mingling and open conversation with the FB and AD staff.

Anyone else see Coach Moose's tweets with video of the FB running workouts this morning? Outside in the snow...... Love this staff. If someone knows how to post that on here, I think people would like seeing it.
