Anyone else see Coach Moose's tweets with video of the FB running workouts this morning? Outside in the snow...... Love this staff. If someone knows how to post that on here, I think people would like seeing it. vine.co/v/iJ0VPl7T1uH

Got a very cool letter addressed to Coyote Football alumni from Coach Neilson today, as I am sure many of you other alumni on this board received as well. Coach Neilson seems to really "get" it. In the letter he refers to the importance of this recruiting class and adds that he embraces the alumni. I know that it is a very small gesture, but it is pretty cool to feel as though your old school still thinks you're important to the program. Coach Neilson adds that we should look forward to updates in the coming months about spring football and events leading up to and during next season. Again, a very small, but significant gesture for the new coaching staff to reach out to the football alumni. I was lucky enough to know the previous staff pretty well, and for that reason it was tough to see them go. But this is a very classy move and very cool feeling to have from the new staff that they encourage alumni to come around the program and visit practices and be visible. I have to admit I was a little nervous about how open and welcoming this staff would be and its good to know that Coach Neilson is wanting to build relationships with former players just as Coach Glenn and staff did. Can't wait for spring ball so I can check out a few practices.
Go Yotes!

Very cool to hear that. Bob Nielsen clearly "gets it" and understands the importance of keeping former players connected with the program. Both a good gesture and smart thing to do.

My favorite part of what he said in that article was to take advantage of the indoor environment of the Dakota Dome and to figure out a way to get the most talented players in space. The Coyotes don't necessarily have to go into a spread offense on every snap but they need to do the best they can to take advantage of the full field that they are given on offense to work with. Being multi-dimensional is music to this fans ears.

Anyone going to the Coyote Football Social tomorrow night at the Hillcrest Country Club in Yankton? Hosted by the Yankton Howling Pack, but open to the public. Basically a Meet and Greet with Coach Nielson from 5:30 to 7pm.

With spring football practice underway we are starting to get a feel for what the future of USD football will be under Coach Nielson. I like what I am seeing and hearing. This past week he and his staff did a meet and greet in Yankton (per JH, about 125 people showed up) and yesterday they held a practice in Sioux Falls. Proactive and public focused. To date Nielson has been 'measured' in his comments about the team and expectations but in one recent interview he said USD football is in better shape today than what he started with at WIU. Positive with out blowing smoke.
Also, with about 5 months until the first FB game I believe the Yote fan base is in a much better place than we were a year ago. Thanks to the success of Coyote WBB we have witnessed how a well coached team can play and respond to a Dome filled with enthusiastic fans. We need to carry that spirit into football. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that USD FB will make significant strides over the next few years with conference championships and play-offs the goal. As fans we can make that happen sooner by buying tickets and enthusiastically supporting the team. Buy your season tickets and make plans to attend the games. If you have tickets and are unable to attend a game turn them into the athletic department so they can resell them. We need the revenue and butts in the seats.

Not sure where to put this, but saw it in Charley Walter's column: Under new Gophers football coach P.J. Fleck, players no longer can wear hats and use head phones/ear buds in the training facility. They also will have to wear collared shirts to class.
I love that - and it seems like the kind of respectful, representing-your-school thing Coach Nielsen would do...

I understand a coach making rules about the training facility. You could argue that having headphones on while weight lifting could be unsafe as sometimes you need to communicate and be aware of your surroundings, and, well it's an athletics facility so he can make the rules for the building. Having a dress code for class? Coach should just be happy when all his players attend class and get good grades. No reason to treat them differently than other students.

I am not a fan of the gophs at all, but I like PJ Fleck from what I have seen/read over the past couple years. His players love him and he wins games. Hes all bout culture and seems to really get his kids to buy in on and off the field.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one. The players are not like other students (higher profile, school is paid for, FCOA, etc.), and thus have a different standard/culture.

I don't have a clue why people on this board are talking about Fleck. I've been in the same room with him and heard him talk his pitch. He's a motivational speaker. His high tempo practices fit in perfectly with the brand he's selling. However, I don't know how his brand is going to weather the competition of the Big 10 in the long run. There has to be substance to sustain. That substance, imho, is caring about the players. I have every reason to believe the coaching staff at USD has that substance because I truly think they care about their players. With Fleck, I talked to a 2017 DE recruit's mom this last year and she told me her son was invited over to Western and they told him they intended to offer but only if he committed on the spot. His HS coach also told him he thought that was the best offer he was going to get. Talk about pressure and what's good for who??? This definitely wasn't what was best for the recruit. Smoke and mirrors only last so long. But I think Fleck will always be driving the best of the new Corvettes!
