This is a time of real sorrow for the Abbott family, their many friends, and all that ever had the opportunity to meet and enjoy the vibrant personality of Colette Abbott. She was a tremendous partner for Jim and deserves credit in supporting his efforts to transform the University.
I am not sure of the legal and technical naming rights for our various facilities, beyond the recent announcement of the new "Sanford Arena" and also some talk of possibly naming the main competition b-ball floor for Colette. I would like to see some consideration for recognizing Jim and Colette Abbott in the Dakota Dome remodel. Jim Abbott deserves recognition for all he has accomplished over the last 19 years, and he would add that his mission was greatly enhanced by having Colette at his side. Colette will always be remembered for being the ultimate USD fan for basketball games but she was also a great supporter of everything else that was going on at the University.
Would the campaign to update the Dome be enhanced by also making it a goal to recognize the contributions of Jim and Colette Abbott?
Dedicating the Dome fund raising campaign, and the finished product, to the Abbotts would move the needle for me. I believe there would be a number of alums, and past supporters of non-athletic endeavors, who would share the desire in giving recognition to the Abbotts in the size and scope of the Dome. The actual naming could go a number of different ways, from simply the Abbott Dome, to the Abbott House, or whatever much greater minds could come up with.
Maybe this isn't the right time to be discussing this particular proposal, but for me it is a time of wanting to do something to honor the memory of Colette and to thank Jim.
