I have to agree with Yote53 here. I would rather see freshman, even really good freshman, redshirt for one year before playing. You do not see very many true freshman playing in Fargo. That 5th year is huge for development.
I'm fine either way however. If true freshman are playing this year its because they are better than what we have and it speaks to who Nielson and company are bringing in. Then the question becomes do you sacrifice this year and redshirt everyone to build the program up? Or maybe Nielson thinks there is enough pieces there to be competitive already now with a little help from these true freshman filling the holes.

A good piece - Jay Elsen does a great job and sets a more optimistic tone: t.co/MFUuoNClrgTidbits from the podcast: New players he mentioned to keep an eye on: WR Alonge Brooks JR - athletic, chose USD over FBS programs WR Randy Baker FR - good speed, may see some time WR Trystn Ducker FR - has been good in practice DE Kameron Cline FR - has impressed and heard a lot of good things CB Danny Rambo SO - May be the starting CB opposite Harris CB JoVane Parkinson R-FR - also in rotation at starting CB CB Doug Lewis JR - also in the mix CB Marchalo Judge FR - said for sure will not red-shirt, will see time LB Jake Matthew FR - looks good in the middle, on fence about red-shirting

It's a little discouraging because I have been hearing the "it's going to take some time to bring the talent level up" thing for years. I thought Joe did an entire overhaul of the program during his time here. Didn't he leave us on a solid foundation? That's what we were all told. Haven't we been in a youth movement for years and we just needed "a few more birthdays"? Now we're looking at yet another youth movement. This gets old. As you can tell I'm not in the mood for excuses. Win now, that's all I want to see. My expectations are an upper half of the conference finish, anything less I will consider a failure. Just get it done. You can start by beating that ag school in Brookings this year. It would be a nice way for them to open the new cattle yard. This is a breathe of fresh air, Thanks. It's always a year or two away and I hate hearing that as well.

A good piece - Jay Elsen does a great job and sets a more optimistic tone: t.co/MFUuoNClrgThank you for sharing. Listening to Elsen talk about the QB situation and saying we have three very viable options at QB is very refreshing. That position has been largely questionable for this team since Dante Warren and now it is questionable for an entirely different reason. Elsen's take seemed to be that Saeger and Streveler are 1/2, but the numbers could be flipped or thrown out entirely since we will see both of them under center against New Mexico. There's a lot we could do with both guys on the field too, especially with an up tempo offense meant to catch defenses off guard. I don't know how far Elsen is reaching with his comments on Simmons, but he used the term 'NFL caliber' when describing his arm. However this situation settles it sounds pretty clear that we have our QB of the future in Austin Simmons.

This season hasnt even started and we have our qb of the future? Why dont we find one this year and leave next year alone. By the way nothing is guaranteed.

Redshirt freshman is put on the same level as two upper classmen, seems pretty obvious who will be our starter in a couple years barring unforeseen circumstances.

Correct unforseen circumstances like another qb jumping him. Another transfer. He is listed with them because he is eligible to play. I realy dont think they would have a qb returning kicks if he was "listed with the others" and the QB of the future.

Where has it been said that Simmons is returning kicks? Wasn't that Woodward who was moved to DB?

Coach mentioned it at the Old Lumber Yard radio show last night (as a possibility)

Why would you take your #3 and put him on the field returning kicks? Well, if I saw that he was not going to beat out the other 2 this season but that he was such a great athlete I needed to find a way to get him on the field to impact games, well then I could see it. This doesn't mean he is not the QB of the future, it actually strengthens the case that this kid is so talented that we need to find a way to get him in the game.

I am not a fan of having a QB return kicks/punts. Hope we do not see it unless he is back there to simply fair catch a punt.
My official prediction this year is 4-7 (3-5).
I understand the win now mentality, but I think this staff had more holes to fill from the glenn era than people realize, especially regarding depth. Hence the pile of freshmen.

Also remember, a couple years ago, Saeger played some on special teams as well.
