The Big Sky is catching the Valley this year. If it makes anyone feel a little better about today Cal Poly just beat the Jacks at the Dyke 38-31. These Big Sky wins this year are probably going to reduce the teams that make the playoffs from the MVFC by at least one entrant. It appears the Coyotes are still at least a year away from being a serious playoff contender.

Valley took it on the chin today. Bison did what they do but ISUr, USD, and now SDSU all choked today.

I can't believe I am saying this but I completely agree with you coyote fan. We have went through this kind of stuff for how long? You get up on a team and then just put the cruise on to try and hang on for the win, hopefully. Why? If you want to milk the clock, wait a little longer to do it than halfway through the 3rd quarter only up 20. We as a team should know 20 points at that point in the game is not a safe lead. USD has done this for years. I was hoping with this offense, that we would keep the foot on the gas a little more. It's ok to beat people by 30+ points sometimes. For years, we get up by 3 touchdowns and for whatever reason, everyone thinks it's over. So we go into "safe" mode and get so insanely conservative on play calling.
You always hear coaches say football is a chess match. Earlier in the game when we were rolling, we were mixing up the play calling and it was opening up the run and the pass. Then we get up 20 and go into "safe" mode and playing not to lose. We run the ball every play, especially 1st and 2nd down, and they stack the box. What do you expect to happen. You don't milk the clock in the 3rd quarter. Sorry.
For those saying punt it and make them score instead of passing on 3rd down? Really? The defense wasn't stopping anything at that point. Then look at overtime. We throw a pass to shamar on FIRST down and boom. TD. Then second overtime, run again.
It's just a little frustrating seeing this same type of stuff happening for as many years as I have watched USD football.

Iceman I agree with some of what you say but to some extent we were only half milking the clock most of the time--OFTEN in 3rd and 4th Q we'd run a play with 20 seconds left other times 5. If you're going to do it do it not just half way. It is always easy to second guess after the fact but obviously it would have been better to run and punt the ball than throw the pick 6. I do agree that if you're going to throw it is better on 2nd down than 3rd. The good news is the sun IS coming up this morning--didn't think would be possible yesterday! I know one thing--THIS TEAM AND COACHES WILL NOT QUIT!! The Yotes will get better and more consistent! There's a lot of very good college football teams that are 1-2 right now so which teams are going to step up for the rest of the season? It won't be easy but my guess is the YOTES are one of those teams!! GO YOTES!!!

Everyone really needs to just pump the brakes for a second. There's no one that hates losing more than I do, it's never been a part of my DNA, but you really need to sit back and look at the big picture. We are 1-2. We literally stole one last weekend, and the tables were reversed this weekend. I posted twice I thought it was going to be a close game and it was. UND was 0-2, but their first loss came to Stony Brook, a game they probably should've won, but nonetheless didn't, but it was close. Yesterday Stony Brook laid a 42-14 pasting on Richmond who beat Virginia of the ACC the opening weekend by 17.
This FCS football stuff is darned good football. The Alerus Center is brutal to play in. It's loud for starters. Their fans do a better job than ours of turning that place inside out. And I certainly may be proven out wrong in 2 months, but I fully expect that UND will be in the top 3 of the Big Sky. That league is loaded just like ours is. Montana, Eastern Washington, Cal Poly, UND, Norhtern Arizona, Montana State....it's good football.
I wouldn't be posting this is we had gotten beat 35-10, but the fact is we got beat in 2 OT. It's the one game of the year I had to miss be use a buddy's son got married but I was texting back and forth the entire game with friends that were there. This team is developing character. Culture is not changed overnight. This staff knows what the hell they are doing, and if given a little time and a few feet of leash, they will get it done. You can feel the change in Vermillion right now. We are on an uptick. This stuff doesn't change in 3 weeks because you want it to. You HAVE to lay the foundation for it to happen.
It's easy to coach from your recliner. This staff, and this team does not like what happened yesterday. But it's college football people, and that's what makes it the greatest game in the world because these kids are amateurs and when you are an amateur anything can happen. Quit talking playoffs for now. Let's talk how we as a fan base can improve the atmosphere of support, let the coaches figure out how to improve their team, no let the team figure out what it takes to win on a regular basis. Once they believe they can, they will. Honestlay it was absurd to make the claim we were going to piss pound North Dakota. I'm not sure we can do that to anybody in the FCS level right now, but I also feel that no one can do it to us anymore either.

But we WERE piss pounding UND. We took the first drive of the second half right down the field to go up 20. We owned the LOS. That place was silent, their fans were leaving. All it took was being aggressive in offense for one more series. Just push the ball down field a few times to loosen up that defense and open up a few more run holes.
That's a game we were in position to win but just handed it to them. I don't see how any of us can not be upset by this.

Weber St. was technically a piss pounding as well. What made them so close? The pick sixes/fumble rec. for TDs. Without offensive slip ups that happen to hand TDs to the other teams, we win easily. So I'm with Iceman/Yote 53...though I also agree with yoteforever.
Cleaning up those offensive mistakes makes us a MUCH better football team, and those are issues that can certainly be coached. This team really is on the up-and-up, but with that, we're going to see some tough losses, and it will be frustrating. I agree that the play calling in the second half was suspect, nothing frustrates me more than playing conservatively so early in the game when (as this team should have known from last week) a 20 point lead in the third isn't THAT big of a lead.

53...I don't like it one bit. Don't take my post as saying it's acceptable. But you played, you know how it goes down. I didn't watch it, so I can't elaborate. My comments are coming from the 30,000 foot level. I'm not willing to make statements that I'm done watching, etc. it takes time to build winners. If we learn nothing from this loss, then I'm in agreement with you. However, if we do learn something, the all the better. Building a championship caliber team takes time and patience. Hell, I'm getting older, and I m running out of both.
My gut feel is this staff gets it. I truly believe we will be contending on an annual basis in 3 short years. If not, then I will admit I give up and have lost my perspective on what it takes to be a champion.

Yep. 21 points last week and 14 this week. Points the offense is directly responsible for due to bad mistakes. Clean it up and we win both games going away.

One thing for sure: the Coyotes can put up a lot of points. Sometimes for the other team, but no one can say they don't put points on the board....

Very impressed by the Yotes yesterday. 15 is a hell of an athlete kind of reminds me of a faster version of Tebow. As he improves at QB, so do the fortunes of USD. USD won the trenches which is a good sign for any team. I think you will make some noise in the MVFC. You guys have a hell of a home schedule this year. These teams (UNI, ISU-R, WIU and NDSU) can not be looking forward to going on the road to the Dakota Dome.. Get the Dome full and get it done. Great to play you guys again, we need to play more often and look forward to visiting Vermillion for the return trip.
