Also, the Oline needs to be more disciplined. What did they have 5-6 false starts?

Building a championship caliber team takes time and patience. Hell, I'm getting older, and I m running out of both. My gut feel is this staff gets it. I truly believe we will be contending on an annual basis in 3 short years. If not, then I will admit I give up and have lost my perspective on what it takes to be a champion. Nobody wants to hear it, but true turnaround takes time (years). USD/Vermillion is a really nice place with the right coaching staff that will produce. I'm very familiar with the recruiting process and have seen the good & bad when it comes to coaches/facilities. USD is a hidden gem... This staff is here to win and the players are as well, but as we all know nothing will be given... Enjoy your school, enjoy your team, you all are lucky to have them...

Hindsight is always 20/20, but was visiting with someone last night regarding the game and he felt the Yotes should have went for 2 after scoring the TD in the first overtime. His reasoning was that UND had all the momentum & UND going to have the ball second in the next overtime, so why not go for the W. Thoughts?

Thought the same thing at the time. Make it a one play game. Drop back to pass knowing full well Streveler has the running ability to get 3 yards on a scramble.
Hindsight is 20/20.

Something to make sure and do in our next game when it goes into OT too!

Going for two and the win is something you do against teams you have little business competing with. We handled UND most of the game and still could have regained control.

I agree with everyone who says pump the brakes. It is going to take some time to get the consistency we all want to see from this team. The good news is, even though they lost, they still played hard to the end and gave themselves a chance to win. The conference schedule is brutal, but with some of the better teams coming to the dome, hopefully we can use the home crowd and pull off some upsets. As far as what I saw, good adjustments early by the coaching staff, I was worried after the first few series, but we stuck with the plan and started finding our offence. The o-line has its issues, but they seem to be improving, the loss of Kennedy in the second half was huge. As much of a fan of Streveler that I have been since he transferred, I also recognize that his arm strength is average at best. Please stop throwing the most difficult pass in football that requires a strong arm, the 10 yard out!! He continues to get picked on that play and we need to recognize this is not in his wheelhouse. We also all learned the negative of the fast pace offense and that is, slowing it down to control the clock. Just something we will need to live with. Defensively, we looked good at times, but we are clearly a few athletes short of where we want to be. Greenfield looks to be a huge addition back from injury, added speed off the edge. I also liked Rambo, Gray and Judge in the D Backfield. Any word on Wessel, as he left early holding his arm?? Good time for a bye week. Go Yotes!

If you believe the UND fans (and their previous 2 games), we scored over 40 points against an elite FCS defense in their building. We will need to outscore teams to win games this year (vs. Out-muscle or outrun or out-defense), and 3 games in, it is clicking already. That is a very good sign! I would have guessed late season for it to come together.

5 minutes into the 3rd quarter and the Yotes are already over 100 yards rushing. One poster "bet his house" that the Yotes wouldn't put up 45. I bet he's sweating! Must have been someone else, but I did ask why someone on here thought USD would get 45+ pts easily. Asked if your offense was really that potent. It truly was. Very impressed. You guys will definitely give some teams a hard time this year. The potential is there. Hope you guys can get a few extra MVFC wins this year. Especially if some of the top teams go to Vermillion. Best of luck.

Thanks YoKid, appreciate your perspective. I know I get too myopic at times after witnessing the highs and lows (mostly lows with FB) for 46 odd years. The Saturday loss was a real kick in the gut (you know its bad when you get no joy over the misery flowing from the brer rabbit brethren's loss - which I am sure was reciprocal for many of them), but I do believe we are in better position today for moving upward than anytime in history.

When it comes to pumping the breaks, being patient, giving it some time (some say a matter of several years) I have an opinion on that. I have a little patience right now but only because of the massive turnover in defensive talent and the fact that this team is getting used to a brand new coaching staff, system etc. Patience can only go so far. For me if the program is still showing struggles without much improvement midway through next season then I will lose that patience and probably rather quickly.
I just love the question, "give it time as it takes time to build a program". In 1988 people asked that question and I started asking that question a few years later. We are still waiting for the "few more years" that we were supposed to wait for the program to improve. We are now 28 years later and we still get told to "be patient and give it more time". At what point should patience run out and at what point are we supposed to say "the time is now and not next year". Losing programs are always a year or two or three away from success. Winning programs win "now" and not 2 or 3 years from now. It would be a whole different thing if the program was coming off years and decades of success. If a couple of years of losing happen to occur after a run of success then it is a little easier to be at least a little patient.
On Saturday we were all thinking things were finally going to be different. We have a new coach, a new philosophy but BOOM suddenly the Coyotes of old show up and another gut wrenching loss. This happens one week after the Coyotes finally showed that they can be the team that steals victory from the jaws of defeat and what do they do but only one week later give it all back and remind us of teams of old. Saturday is a great example of why I hate "be patient" because all being patient does is generally lead to the same mistakes over and over again until someone stands up and says "I am tired of being patient, lets figure this thing out right now and not 2 weeks from now, 1 year from now, 5 years from now or 20 years from now. After the success of the 1986 team suddenly we decided that Coyote football needs to be put on a 30 year plan or maybe we are halfway through rebuilding the program from the 60 year plan that was spelled out in the mid to late 80's. Of course I am being sarcastic to a point but occurrences like Saturday happen over and over again and nothing ever seems to be happen to reverse that trend. Nielson is a different coach and this is a different team but maybe if he does not success at USD that no one will ever succeed at USD. Maybe we are like the Cubs of MLB or the Vikings of the NFL in that bad luck just follows. If it wasn't for the USD football curse I would have faith that Nielson is the guy to turn it around but at this point in time Nick Saban might not be able to win here.

Wow crazy I feel like I'm reading the UTEP boards... I grew up watching the Miners...the Texas red-headed step child... Even as of yesterday I was getting texted that they want the staff fired. Anyhow when Mike Price became the coach he energized the city and there were years of success, however that was short lived because to be a consistent winner everyone has to be all in. There has to be huge investments by all with no guarantees of success. Some of my best memories where attending the crazy tailgates, meeting all kinds of folks, post parties and attending a bowl game in Mobile, Alabama. Coyotes are competing, hopefully that continues. The investment is there for facilities, a champion staff hired, recruiting has picked up. Support is up to you all... I have no ties to USD anymore, however I took a liking to the staff and community and will watch all USD games win or lose from Texas...Go Yotes!!!

He's venting frustration about the team not looking like a winning program yet and I can agree with him. Watching the team back in 2013 when we finished 4-8 with a number of close calls I figured we would have made the step forward and been a playoff team by now. Frustrating to constantly feel at least a year away from that next level, but it's premature to jump to the conclusion that we are going nowhere this year. With this offense we can outscore anyone on the schedule. Entire conference slate lies ahead and the team may still improve upon last year. Heading into the season I would have counted a .500 MVFC record as a success and step forward for the program and that's still on the table. A win against Youngstown and this place would turn right around and be brimming with optimism. The right staff is in place and good things will happen.
