Basically the eastern schools rotate off of a western school for two years. I have no idea what the rotation is, but I do know that there's some goofy quirks in the scheduling that leads to UNI/SDSU playing the other top three at home one year and all on the road the next. This year SDSU has to go to NDSU, UNI, and ISUr. With that conference schedule, SDSU could be better than last year but end with a similar or worse record honestly. The only thing the agreement spells out is that the eastern teams didn't want to add an extra trip to the Dakotas and Iowa when you guys got added. So, since the schedule was going to be unbalanced by adding another member anyways, it was agreed that the eastern teams each got to rotate off of one of those schools every year. I'm not sure how MSU fits into it, but they do. USD had the advantage of having the Summit teams on their side for helping get into the conference as a part of getting them into the Summit. UND doesn't have that leverage anymore that they used to have IMO when they dropped baseball they lost a lot of that. If it came down to a vote that was public I only think that they would get the XDSUs and USD to vote for them in the valley. I think the breakdown is as follows: NDSU, SDSU, USD, WIU and UNI all play each other every year. The same for YSU, ISUred, ISUblue SIU, and MSU. One of the five teams from the other "division" is deleted for two years, then a second school is deleted, etc until after 10 years when all teams will have been left off, After that the cycle starts over again.

I think this game is really going to be close. I'm very concerned with UND's defense. They could easily be 2-0. Crowd noise could very well come to play as well. Teams are extremely comfortable playing at home. I will take a 1 point win right now. I think UND could finish as high as 3rd in the BSC.

Quick rivalry related question: Why are NDSU and supposedly SDSU so against UND joining the MVFC? I'm not sure I understand why that would be anything but good for both of them. I like UND less than I like NDSU or USD. UND fans tend to think they're very elite and above other fan bases because of hockey. The nickname debacle really turned me off too. It's easy as an outsider to be critical of UND and their fight to keep their nickname. If a group came in and tried to change the nickname of the Jacks or Coyotes people would ABSOLUTELY be up in arms about it. I think UND had the right to keep their nickname if they wanted to. Forcing them to change it is against what I think America should stand for. They should have put the nickname on a ballet in North Dakota and you either vote to keep it or change it and majority rules. Let the majority decide not the minority that has a bone to pick. Just my opinion. Some one is going to be offended by everything so what gives really.

We gifted Weber 21 but they did give 7 back on a great pass to Adam Harris. UND is a little better than Weber in my mind plus we are traveling, making for a very even game in theory. Very elusive running back in Santiago, this game likely hinges on our ability to contain him. Wessel may be back and able to give us a needed boost on this front. Can't wait to see how this one plays out. The Coyotes didn't gift Weber when they went from 28-21 to 42-21. They earned that by being the better team during that portion of the game. The bottom line is that USD won the game and in the end that is the #1 thing that matters most. I think some USD fans are being a little overly optimistic thinking USD will walk into Grand Forks and take a fairly comfortable win. There were weaknesses in the Weber game that luckily didn't end up costing the Yotes the game but could resurface in Grand Forks and make the difference between a win and a loss. We will see tomorrow.

My keys to the game
1A, 1B and 1C) The defense definitely has to step up. UND is pretty balanced on offense so the pass defense and run defense will both have to be good to pull out a win. Of all the keys this one worries me the most.
2) The Coyotes have to be multi-faceted on offense. I would like to see the Coyotes try going downfield earlier to soften up the D and get them out of the 7 or 8 man in the box defense that they will probably want to play. Streveler has to convert for big plays when he does get into the UND secondary and instead of a 15 yard run he needs to take it the the house. I see UND pretty much bottling up the Coyote run game unless Streveler hurts them with his arm.
3) The Coyotes need to make more plays on special teams. It seems like against Weber that the return men were way too tentative and afraid to just get on their horse and run straight down field. Way too tentative.
4) Try to avoid keeping the crowd in the game and in turn giving the Hawks the energy advantage. Gosh I hate saying Hawks. I just want to say the "S" word.

Thanks Thumper and gorabbits, your explanation makes sense.
At some point I think Youngstown and/or Indiana State will bolt the conference but I'm okay with the status quo.

Agreed - thanks for the perspective. I don't agree with it, but that is why I asked - just trying to understand. I believe the addition of UND shifts the 'balance of power' to the old NCC teams, and thus collectively they will be shielded from almost any conference realignment, given the cumulative support and $$ behind them. Many teams would like to join the 'New NCC' if a bunch of eastern teams left, but who would want to join a conference of ISUr, ISUb, WIU, etc? No one, unless it is regional rivalries. And as the B1G can attest, those rivalries carry a conference year in year out, as the teams at the very top cycle through. (BTW - given how the FCS picks playoff teams, the fictional western division would send 3 or 4 teams each year as a near guarantee, as their scheduling would be top 10 annually. This isn't the BCS.) Not my decision to make, but I'd welcome UND in.

As much as I would like to see the Coyotes win by about 50 points I am predicting 27 to 21 for The Good Guys. Yotes dominate a lot of the game but ND has a history of lucking out against SD especially in their dopey arena. I believe the last time up there the visitors blew a sizable lead late in the game. And that was the end of Meierkort.
Go South Dakota!

Based on what the various fans are saying, it may come down to who can control tempo. If it is a fast played game, big advantage Yotes. If is a slow grind, advantage Sioux. We need to root for big plays, I guess, even if we are giving some of them up. Get the score in the 40's or 50's. I don't buy that their D is on the same level as the Packers (I doubt it is the best D in their own state), but it will be interesting to see if the Yotes - in only the 3rd game with the new O style - can respond in a slower grinding game to dictate tempo.
I'm still predicting a bunch of scoring (both sides).

Freaking Bison just beat Iowa... Unsure if I should be impressed with NDSU or embarrassed for Iowa. Good for the conference either way

Iowa shows they are a little over-rated as usual. They played no one last year which led to the top 10 rating and got crushed in their bowl game. Nonetheless, any ranked FBS team should not lose to a FCS team, especially at home. Great win for the Bison, they just keep winning.
