Sounds to me like Mick Garry is predicting a Yote loss Saturday by stating that Western Ill is way better than even their record shows... ... and insinuating the Yotes wins weren't all that impressive. amp.argusleader.com/amp/701458001

I think Mick is just trying to offer perspective. UND getting beat at home certainly didn't help our SOS.

I understand that... but sure seems like we don't get much love from him or the AL. We'll just have to keep winning I guess... and if that happens, does that mean that all our opponents are not very good?

Again, Mick being pragmatic, not an unpaid cheerleader working for an independent third party.

He really doesn't even go so far as to form an opinion, merely stating what happened on Saturday for our previous and upcoming opponents. Reading the piece, I got to the end and wondered "where's the rest of this?" He certainly is not enticing anyone to subscribe or follow the team (which, the Argus does have an interest in) with a piece like this though. Pragmatic is a term that's come up. Stale is one I attribute to Mick. It's not bad writing, but I would say he isn't attracting anyone with it.

In the pod cast prior to the Bowling Green game when he started out talking about the game he made it seem like it would be a major upset if the Coyotes won that game. The Coyotes played an above average game but didn't play spectacular. They won because they were clearly the better team. I doubt Mick even took the time to research Bowling Green much at all but maybe I am wrong. The Coyotes and Leathernecks have been equally impressive. For the most part if you really have no clue how a game will go looking at the Vegas spread usually will tell you most of what you need to know. It is based on betting that is true but in a game like this where there wouldn't be a lot of betting more then likely the spread is a pretty good way to make a decent judgement. If Vegas is off too much on a spread their will be professional betters ready to pounce and then a spread will settle closer to where it should be. Today the spread is -1 for the Coyotes which I am a little surprised with. I figured WIU would end up being a 3 point favorite. Maybe it will shift towards them the closer to game time it gets. Talking to a bunch of fans from one team or another usually isn't the best way to really know how a game will go. A fan base in general will always be quite biased towards their own.

Again, Mick being pragmatic, not an unpaid cheerleader working for an independent third party. This is no longer about being a cheerleader (because Mick rarely gives the Coyotes the benefit of the doubt) but about real results and a real eye test showing the Coyotes are actually pretty darn good. What people do need to consider at least a little bit is that by the Coyotes whipping up on UND they probably took a big hit to their confidence and there may have been some carryover effect. Injuries are also playing a toll but the Hawks were a good team last year and returned many of their players. The Hawks are better then how they have played the last two weeks. I guess time will tell but I see UND bouncing back at least a little and maybe finishing out 5-6 or 6-5. If I am the Argus what do I want. Do I want a beat writer that almost goes out of his way to be negative towards the team that he is covering or do I want a writer who is going to create interest in the fan base. Mick does write some good article but he does very little to excite the Coyote Fan base. The Jacks get the cheerleader writer all the time and the Coyotes get the rehashed boring guy that doesn't really seem to like his job all that much. That is just my take.

State fans piss and moan about their guy anyways (I never read the pieces to know what he's like). I'd love to see their response to someone in the vein of Mick covering their team instead. Who's ready to never experience the highs of fandom ever again?!

Who's ready to never experience the highs of fandom ever again?! Of course if Mick were to cover the Jacks he would be injected with the rabbit serum and probably become a different guy all together. Anytime something or someone touches down in Brookings SD they somehow lose their ability to think rationally.
