Good for Matt in admitting that. I was right there with him/them but I had the Yotes a little higher at 6th. Outside of Vermillion no one was taking this program seriously just yet and that is fine. The Coyotes have to prove it on the court first and they are doing that for the first time as a Summit Program. I think the Coyotes were slightly over achieving until the NDSU game and then the Coyotes became that team that turned from being a little bit improved to a program that was turning heads in a hurry. With the new players consistency was an issue but that is to be understood. I do think it helps that in the off season there was some malignancy that had to be dealt with and was cut out. The longer this season goes on the more it does seem like the talent and motivation level just wasn't there prior to this year but the factor of chemistry cannot be understated either. This years team is obviously more talented but they are matching that talent to being coached well and playing harder more consistently and I think that started with the Omaha game at home and has really ramped up recently. Coach Smith deserves a lot of credit especially considering that it was looking like after last year that he was kind of sinking into irrelevancy as far as how he was viewed outside of Vermillion. The best thing the Coyotes can do is to just not get ahead of themselves. Play the opponent in front of you and not the opponent a week into the future. The men's success should help the Summit attendance for Coyote fans but I still think with the program that it is a slow growing process. If the Coyotes can get to the point of having half as many fans or more than what SDSU brings then their advantage won't be significantly less then what SDSU has now. Men and Women combined this may be the most rewarding basketball season in many years.
