This will be an emotional game for Western Illinois and Bob Nielson for sure. The Leathernecks will definitely have a point to prove on saturday.
Western Illinois is 5-2 overall and 2-2 in conference
at Eastern Illinois W 38-21
vs Northern Arizona W 34-20
at Northern Illinois W 28-23
at SDSU L 52-14
vs Indiana State W 36-35
at Missouri State W 38-35
vs NDSU L 21-13
The Leathernecks have only had one bad game and it was a very bad one for them in their loss to the Jacks. Otherwise they have been good especially in the non conference portion of their schedule going 3-0. Their only other loss was to the Bison at home and that was a respectable showing. Other than playing the Jacks and Bison they are 5-0. I believe coming in that the game against them would be a little tougher than the game against Illinois State just because they have been more consistent then Illinois State.
To pick up the win the Coyotes will likely have to play their best football for longer than a little over a quarter. Based on their past games it would be wise to expect WIU to put up somewhere in the high 20's or 30's for points. They have done that in 5 of their 7 games and will have perfect conditions in the dome to put up similar numbers. The Coyote D will have to be at their best. The Yotes will probably have a little easier time putting up points then they did against UNI or Youngstown but they will need to keep their offense rolling for the entire game and be diverse with their offense using all facets of their attack, not just limited to running up the middle of passing more than 30 yards downfield.
If both teams play mistake free football both will be hard to beat. I predict that whoever wins the turnover battle will win the game, especially if one team is +2 or better. I know that is kind of a generic key to the game but it's an important key in pretty much any game. The crowd being loud for the D would give them a nice advantage.
I give the Coyotes about a 52-55% chance to win so it is close to a pick em. I will pick the Coyotes 34-31 with a field goal at the horn for the win. I do not feel as confident about this one then I did against Illinois State.
