Disregard the FCS stats poll. It is Widely mocked by anyone that follows FCS football. They have Montana state receiving votes for instance. The bobcats are 2-6 with one win over a d2 school and other win against a non scholarship. That poll is worthless

I don't think finishing 4th alone isn't a guarantee for a playoff spot. The non conference season won't help USD's cause when it comes to getting a bid. That is why a head to head win over UNI and hopefully WIU may help make up for the non conference record. I don't disagree with getting left out at 4th, but how do you figure the non-conference schedule to work against us? Weber State and UND are rated or receiving a high number of votes. Mainly because of the 1-2 record in the non conference is why I don't think the Yotes are helping themselves eventhough Weber and UND are looking good right now. I think there is a very good chance that the Coyotes end up finishing 6-5 overall and 5-3 in the conference. If that were to happen my guess is that the Coyotes might end up getting left out if both of the remaining losses in that senario are to NDSU and SDSU. The Coyotes could end up having a decent resume but lacking in big wins. If Youngstown, NDSU and SDSU keep winning and the Coyotes lose to all three of them I am not sure as a committee member that I put the Yotes in the playoffs but that depends on the other teams they are competing against. UND got the short end of the stick with the playoff committee last year in favor of Western Illinois. With the head to head against the Big Sky by the MVFC and USD's loss to UND I think the committee gives them the benefit of the doubt if it is a close call between USD and UND and they can only choose one. The Coyotes almost certainly won't make it if they finish 4-4 in the Valley and almost certainly will make it if they finish 6-2. The grey area is 5-3 and it gets real dicey if that is the senario. I look back to 2005. The Coyotes had one of their best seasons ever and had one of their best teams ever but they were left out of the playoffs. They absolutely were a playoff team but they were not a known entity to the committee and I think that hurt them eventhough it shouldn't. The next season they made the playoffs eventhough the team was not quite as good but the year before the big snub stuck out in the committee members mind ending up making a difference in 2006. I can see the same thing happening this year. The Coyotes end up coming close, having a case, but end up being left out and possibly with some controversy. It will be their intro to contention and will help their case in the future if a similar things should happen like it did in D2. That is what I envision happening. I don't think the Yotes get the benefit of the doubt if it's close. That is why I think the team better keep winning and try their best to finish 6-2 because that might be what it takes this year. The Coyotes put themselves behind the 8 ball after slipping to 1-3. At that point it was going to take an incredible turnaround and so far the chances are still alive. A loss to Western Illinois and the chances of making the playoffs go down quite a bit. I think it's healthy for the fans and the team to talk about it. Not to look ahead past the next game in front of the Coyotes but it's good to have a goal and that goal could be a great sense of motivation.

Zero wins over scholarship D1 teams eight games into the season and receiving a surprising number of votes.

Question is... would USD be up around #12 if they had beat UND?

Question is... would USD be up around #12 if they had beat UND? I really doubt it. Polls have huge weight placed on where you started the season. Guessing it would be more around #18. Not that these polls hold any real weight whatsoever.

Take care of business on the field and the polls will take care of themselves.

Coach Fisher said we got through the NDSU game healthy. On offense we will line it up and try to run the ball to control the clock. Defensively we run a 4/3 defensive front.

Hey Yote53, if you really want something to be upset about they've got UNI receiving more votes than us in the media poll too. Even with their losing record and head to head loss against us. Plus as the season has moved on our non conference schedule has proven just as if not more difficult than theirs. How does that sit with you? Honestly, despite my prior post, I really don't give a crap about the polls. Seems like whenever we break in we lose just to fall back out anyway. It does look good for the conference though, and it looks great for the Dakotas having all 4 of our schools ranked at the same time. What those polls show me is that in the FCS being a known brand will get you votes and that the people voting don't actually know what is going on. Look at UNI every single year as evidence of that. SDSU has also started to get that benefit. NDSU, yeah, that's a given. USD and UND don't tend to get that benefit and are consistently underrated. Some of those schools out east that are in the ratings wouldn't survive a season in this conference.

The collapse up in Grand Forks will end up being the dagger that keeps USD out of the playoffs this season. That loss will come back to haunt us come playoff selection time. It would be nice making the playoffs but this is a building year anyway. Knocking on the door will help us in the coming years when we will be legit contenders.

My $.02 - let's not discuss polls or playoffs until after this weekend. Win on Saturday = valid discussion. Loss on Saturday, not so much.
