My two biggest concerns going into next year are RB and TE. Although Fredrick improved throughout the year he does not strike fear in anyone as an offensive threat. He is a nice change of pace back but we need a true #1. Between the 5 true freshman this year and our one recruit for next year, I hope we can find a better option. If not hopefully there is another recruit or transfer the coaching staff is targeting. At TE, I would like to see someone who could be an offensive threat and not just a 6th lineman. We lose Potter who was nothing more than adequate and still have Ramsey but we need to find someone else either in our system or as a recruit. I'm hoping we finally get to see Calvin Strong put the pads on and play this spring. All speculation since we haven't seen him play yet, but he could absolutely be the feature back. Also, I'd like to see Ramsey get more targets at the TE spot.

I haven't heard anything about Calvin in a while but I know that he was battling a foot or ankle injury late in the year, don't know how serious but he was in a walking boot FWIW. Hope to see him blossom in the spring as well. I agree with most of what has been posted so far. Our skill positions are stocked pretty well and have some good looking recruits coming in. Our depth in the trenches is what really needs to improve for us to take the next step. When you look at the games against the DSU's, that where we were clearly outmatched. Even against UND really. When we get the lines on par with the talent that has been brought in at the skill positions, this team will really be something. Can't wait to see how this staff finishes up recruiting season and heads into spring. The Coyotes' stock is definitely rising in my opinion.
Good overall 1st season for this new staff. Like someone else already said, a few bounces our way (literally with UND, WIU, SIU) and our record is reversed with a more difficult schedule than the previous year.
Go Yotes!

Shamar Jackson got hurt in 1st qtr of UNi game. Was in uniform last couple games but never saw the field. I believe it was a groin.
Agree on being set at skill positions on perimeter. RB is big question. Was shocked how much Khilgore played against NDSU, but maybe they figured better see if he has anything to offer.

Congratulations for Chris for being named the Newcomer of the Year!! Very well deserved especially considering he only had one start at QB at MN! It's exciting to imagine the numbers he could have next fall with the added experience, young receivers that have another year of experience, etc!!

So Christion got the first team quarterback and this non red cool aid drinker disagrees. Sorry but when teams game plan for the Jacks they plan to stop the Jacks receivers as their number 1 priority. When teams game plan for the Coyotes they game plan to stop Streveler first, second and third. If you stop Chris you stop the Coyotes. The Coyotes were below average on the line of scrimmage and average at the tail back position. Streveler being a dual threat quarterback allowed the Coyotes offense to do much more than they would have other wise been able to do if Chris was not the running threat that he is. I am sure Christion is also a running threat but not to the extent that Streveler is.
Even some Jacks fans thought that Christion had accuracy issues. His receivers simply have a bigger catch radius than the Coyote receivers have. I believe he got first team quarterback mainly as a team award as much as just a quarterback award. Streveler is like a line backer that can run through tackles and sling it around a bit as well.

Not gonna lie, I was a little surprised to not see Easton Stick on 1st or 2nd team.

2016 was like one step forward and one step back. At least it wasn't two steps back. For all the positives and progress that the offense made was equally hindered by the defense which was the last ranked defense in the conference. With the kind of offense that the team ran it is understandable that the defense not be way at the top of the conference but they needed to be much better than they were. The D gave up over 400 yards 4 times, gave up over 500 yards twice and gave up over 600 yards twice as well. So in 8 of the 11 games the D gave up over 400 yards. In the NDSU and SDSU games the D was basically man handled on the ground. The offense actually only had one game of over 500 yards. If you look at total yardage and gave a win loss based on who won the total yards the Coyotes would have come out 4-7 just as their actual record. In many of those 7 losses the Yotes were out gained pretty severely but held the score to a closer margin than the actual play on the field. That can be good and can be bad depending on how you look at it.
If there is one mantra that the Coyotes should have right at the top of their goals for the off season it is to "finish" games and also "finish" the season stronger. I don't think I need to rehash the importance of the need to play better in situations with big leads. Everyone gets that.
I was looking back and the lack of ability to take one step forward followed by another step forward actually rings very true. The last 2 seasons that the Coyotes made two consecutive improvements in overall record occurred in 2003 and 2004. It hasn't happened since. For that streak to be broken it will take at least until the 2018 season for that to repeat itself. Even this year when things were looking there best the team took steps backwards before they were able to really capitalize on the momentum.
The Coyotes showed that they can be very explosive especially in the dome where they had some very good teams in big trouble. It was kind of jaw dropping how they were able to pick apart Illinois State and Western Illinois's defenses when they fired on all cylinders and kept in attack mode. As soon as the offense showed even the slightest notion to get out of attack mode it allowed those teams to regroup and get back into the game. This team was the most fun team to watch live of any version of a D1 team they have had to date. If nothing else we got entertainment value out of the team. I really liked the offense that we ran and Streveler made some big strides through out the season. The receiving core was heads and shoulders better than they were a year ago and they improved a ton though out the season. When it comes to the offense is was all about mentality for them. The biggest issue was that they needed to do what they knew they could do for longer stretches of games.
In the off season if the Coyotes are going to be a serious playoff contender they need to shore up both lines but I don't know what they can do with new players that is going to make big improvement in one season. I also kind of wish we had one feature tailback that stepped up as the stud going into next season. I don't know if we know who that player will be as of yet. It seems like the program has recruited about 10 running back over the last couple of years so hopefully someone will step up and be the stud that we need. It seemed like Frederick came along nicely towards the end of the season but overall he didn't produce what I was hoping he would after he showed flashes last season. He probably just doesn't have the build to be an every down back in the tough MVFC.
As long as the strengths are maintained and weaknesses improved one would think the team would finish with a better record then this year but the schedule remains brutal next season.
2017 schedule
at Bowling Green - would be a nice way to start the year with an upset. at Drake - a must win vs North Dakota - would be advisable to win this one because if not a 1-2 start would not be good at Western Illinois - back to back games having to face the teams that dealt the Coyotes the most painful losses of the year vs Youngstown State - by the end of this game I think we will have a good snap shot of whether we have an improved team or not vs Indiana State - if this doesn't go down as a win playoffs probably won't be in the cards at Illinois State - just another brutal Valley road game vs Southern Illinois - another crucial game to get a win at Northern Iowa - yikes at North Dakota State - if things don't click to this point this could be the final dagger without a win vs South Dakota State - They will probably be even better next year
This is a brutal schedule. 3 games that absolutely have to be wins are Drake, Indiana State and Southern Illinois. even dropping one of those will already make a difficult task much tougher. So for the other games the Coyotes need to be at minimum 3-5 and possibly 4-4. I am not sure if 6-5 would get it done or not with Drake on the schedule in place of Weber State. It would make for a very nervous selection sunday. For the conference schedule it is hard to imagine a much more difficult task with how the home and road games are setup.

Suspense is killing me. (Full disclosure - did not read any of that post).

I see your point, but his numbers were pretty great. Not gonna lie, I was a little surprised to not see Easton Stick on 1st or 2nd team. Rant.... I'm not arguing that TC wasn't a shoe-in for 1st team QB - the nature of the award isn't 'most valuable' or even 'best', and as such they almost always go to a player on a team with big numbers and a great record. It still stuns me 10 years ago (or longer) when USC had 2 of the 3 Heisman finalists. If the QB was that good, then being the RB will be unmeasurably easier, and vice versa. In the current MVFC situation, TC could have been replaced with the guy from last year (Louhan or something), and their record may have been the same, maybe they drop one of their close wins, since the WR/TE were the stars of the show, with the OL giving time for them to get open. That is what opens up the discussion - other teams had guys who were much more valuable to their team's success, including Stick & Streveler.

Congratulations to Alonge Brooks WR for being named to the MVFC new comers team! The Coyotes had a lot of underclassmen who played for the first season and they played well which makes the outlook for fall 2017 that much more exciting!

I think another thing that kind of hurt the Yotes this year is that they likely really didn't have an expectation of what to expect out of the season at the beginning. I don't know if their was that resolve that it is a playoff or bust mentality. I think it was more like, "lets improve and be the best we can be".
The season started out so so but some real momentum was gained in that three game winning streak in the middle of the year. I think maybe the Yotes were a little too satisfied with some moderate success and maybe their drive wasn't that playoff or bust mentality after the Western Illinois game. I am actually not extremely disappointed with the loss to SDSU or the loss to NDSU in a vacuum. Both of those teams are just better football teams and the Yotes were simply out played. What really disappoints me is letting that Western Illinois game get away and that wasn't even the most disappointing part. What was the most discouraging is how the team responded to that loss. Instead of really having a chip on their shoulder against Southern Illinois they treated it like a ho hum game with no real urgency to put away a win less conference team. The Coyotes should have had extra motivation and urgency needing to know they were going to have to win that game to have a realistic shot at a playoff birth. That was even more true knowing that a 2-0 finish was going to be very unlikely.
The season is only 11 games long which is many games fewer than most other sports. The actual playing time in a game is much more limited so the most needs to be made of each of those games. One bad half or even a few bad plays can make a huge difference.
The Coyotes need to have that playoff or bust mentality next season from the get go. There has to be a consistent hunger and games like the one at SIU just can't happen. Hopefully with experience and resolve those types of things don't happen as often in the future and that includes finishing opponents when they are down in a game.
