Honest question. Does a school actively try to get their PWO’s academic scholarships? Someone’s like McCance is listed as PWO and a national honor society guy. Are they working that angle with admissions? Frankly I was surprised to see Kuchel as a PWO after he turned down a PWO at Iowa State. If he qualifies for any academic scholarships he would receive them anyway, even if he was on a full scholarship....some kids really do get paid to go to school. Just because he is a National Honor Society, doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot anymore. Kids have to have 3.0 in high school and have to be a leader, character, blah, blah, blah. It used carry more weight than it does now. A lot of kids don't even bother with application and reference letters.

Great question. The skeptical side of me thinks there must be some rule around this, otherwise why wouldn't some universities use that as a way to get more scholarships than what they are currently allowed? Not 100% clear on this, but I've had it explained to me that an academically gifted player can be granted academic money in lieu of an athletic scholarship but it stills counts toward your number of scholarship players. So basically what it does it saves the athletic department some coin. Clear as mud? It's something along those lines anyway. So an academic scholarship and none from the football pool still counts against the team limit?

Walkons who can't come in until after school has started are treated differently. It's all kind of confusing and I hope I'm not screwing up too much. Just about everyone at USD gets some kind of financial package thanks to our great endowment with the USD Foundation and, as yodayote said, some kids can actually make money going to school athlete or not.

Wooden certainly is fast and good talent. But is he tough enough to play in our area? He is wearing a hand warming pouch in San Diego when people on the sidelines are wearing shorts and T-shirts. What is going to do in October & November around here?

A few winters and your blood thickens and you acclimate to the climate here.

He is a JUCO so I don't think they can technically sign until the new semester.
