I know the day before the SLT is a weird time to post this, but I just got done doing the BB attendance, so I just used the same template for VB.
I didn't have data for USD other than the last 3 seasons. For some reason those links are dead on the website. Since the "Den" had a pretty limited capacity, I expect the average attendance would have to have been below 500 anyway...
Looks like NDSU and UND will be the venues with the most fans, with Omaha and Ft Wayne respectable (Not surprised with the interest in VB in the state of NE).
I think this conference has the potential to perennially produce dangerous teams in the NCAA tournament. The midwest produces a lot of D-1 talent in VB, and has been well-represented in the tournament for the last few decades. To me, USD has an opportunity to make a name for themselves in this sport, ala Colorado State, Creighton, Ohio, etc. being mid-majors with perennially great teams and lots of fan support. We have the facility and the coach, and its looking like the fan support could be there too.
Samantha Slaughter, a Nebraska recruit from Harrisburg, SD was considering USD along with Iowa State and Nebraska this year. That's a good sign, IMO. I think the future is bright here for the Yotes.
Thanks again for going through the work to show this. I know we are planning on getting a couple season tickets to volleyball this coming year.
I am surprised the bunny attendance is so low... From reading bunny posters on this board recently, they strongly support all their athletic programs.
I also saw recently that there is a Groupon for anyone wanting to attend the Rabbit v-ball camps this summer. What do you suppose that means?
I'm not sure why the attendance has been average for the Jacks for VB. They won the regular season and tournament title in 2007, and NDSU went on a tear in 2008-2011. The Bison showed a spike in attendance, but the Jacks didn't. I'm sure if they had a few years of dominance that could change, but who knows? IUPUI has been a great program, but like in WBB, their fans don't seem to notice. Same with Denver.
I was looking at USD Volleyball attendance for 2017 and noticed a major reporting error:
Three matches at the Greely, CO Tournament were tagged as "home games" instead of "neutral" games. The Rutgers game had no attendance recorded, and the Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Air Force games had a combined attendance of 178.
Since there were only 7 true home games last year instead of the 10 reported, it affected the average quite a bit.
Reported: 5410 / 10 = 541 ave
Actual 5232 / 7 = 747 ave
that doesn't sound like a lot, but comparing teams in this conference, we should be mentioned as the #1 or #2 average home attendance, and that mistake puts us as an average team in the conference. Not cool for the fans that have helped USD make and sustain that progress.
If anyone knows someone inside the department, please mention this. It's probably too late to correct with the NCAA, but it's still important to fix.
There has been another attendance reporting error for this year. The Northern Colorado match attendance was not reported, so it shows up as 0. The actual attendance for that match was 473. That means the current average attendance should be 601, instead of 522. That kind of thing irritates me. Hopefully we can correct that before it is reported to the NCAA, but probably not.
I was checking out the Summit League record book, and came accross this:
Summit Tournament Attendance Records:
Total Tournament Attendance: rank--#---YEAR-HOST--LOCATION
Championship Match Attendance: rank--#---YEAR-MATCHUP---LOCATION
NDSU V PFW
NDSU V PFW
ORU V VALPO
VALPO V ORU
VALPO V ORU
I don't want to get ahead of myself in crowning this team the regular season champs, but if they do accomplish that we would host the 2020 VB SLT in Vermillion. Looking at these numbers, I can't help but think we can add to these records. 2009 was pretty impressive, but there is a sharp drop to #2 and below. With our central location I'll guess we get at least a few fans from ND and Omaha, and if the Jacks get their program in order and get to the tourney, you know there would be some blue as well. Who knows?
On the other hand, the 2019 Summit VB tournament is scheduled for Nov 22-24. Friday-Sunday of the last weekend of the FCS football season. We play the Jacks on the 23rd. I'm sure that typically puts a damper on attendance, in addition to BB having started. Always something.
