We need our students to be this “active” at games. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yI6cEog4cnY If UNI can do this so can we. Come on students, take off your diapers and do something at games. Get into it, have fun. This is what college was all about. I love the big football players showing up (when they do) but they need to wear Red. This is USD. heck last game there was some kid wearing blue and yellow (not an actual SDSU shirt). It was like playing the game one of these is not like the other. That kid stuck out like a sore thumb. If we can have countless drunk greeks dance at that whatever it is called oh ya strollers, then we certainly can have our greek community get together and Unite as one. Yotemeal - let's start with your old house. How do we get them all to work together and come up with something cool, original, crazy, and loud. Yotefan - let's get your old house involved too. Then we go on down the line. Trust me, if I was a greek I would already have been chewing butt to my old house, but I wasn't a greek so I can't. These students need to earn the right to be called Coyote Crazies again. And as an original member of the Coyote Crazies, I can say that. We need Tim Shea to come back and get a master degree or something. He can light a fire under these kids' butts. Let's do this. |

Yes,Bring back Tim Shea that was the fun days in basketball. Remember when they sang the song thats on jaws, when we were kicking a$$ "iam tired and i wanna go home iam tired and i wanna goto bed drank beer about an hr ago and it went straight to my head" that was classic. Or when we hit a 3 they did ole lay. AGREE BRING BACK THE CRAZIES

How about euuuuu saw saw euuuuuuu saw saw, hit em in the head with an euuuu saw saw. Or the classic UND cheers "Rich Glass kiss our ass". He actually liked it, he came over and said he wished we would come to Grand Forks and cheer for them. Or when Chad Mustard played, we'd yell "we hate Mustard, we love Ketchup." Original stuff like that Shea created. Of course, there was the not to be named ex-BB player turned Charlie Coyote who would sled down the Dome steps and smoke the rail. He would take a toy hoe (like garden hoe) and walk behind the SDSU women's bench. He'd raise his hand high with that toy hoe in hand. The USD crowd would yell "Hoe". That brought a few SDSU dad's down from the crowd. So that might have been going a little far. But we need student participation like what we had in the late 1990s. It's been dead since like 2002.
We need a student leader like Tim Shea who can organize these kids and get them to follow him/her.
Oh classics.

We tried to get an "Erkel! Erkel! Erkel!" chant going from the old student section in the North bleachers last game for the goggle wearing player from Houston Baptist. Alas, nobody joined in.
It is just not as fun as it used to be, but the bright spot is the band has a few pretty good hecklers.

I love to see that from the student section. For those that are very new to the program during State-U games from the past the students were much, MUCH more into it than you see anytime recently. They used to chant and so forth. Luckily I was a part of it back in the day. I want to say year 1991 or was in 1992 I was at my first ever State-U game in Vermillion and couldn't believe how fun the atmosphere was. Maybe that is why I have been hooked ever since. We took a stuffed rabbit one time and the group around us had our way with it by pulling it appart by the seams and throwing stuffing into the air and all over the place. It was very fun. We used to do the E-I-E-I-O chant which was hilareous from the USD perspective. It's a no wonder why so many Jacks fans hate USD. We let them know about their farming roots. But the bottom line is that it was all in good fun.
The dissolving of the old NCC was a big reasons for much of the downturn in support all around and definately student support. We needs rivals again, and need more than one. I think getting into the Missouri Valley someday would be great for the rejuvination of basketball but a new facility wouldn't hurt. Ironically the facility that was featured in that video is the same one that USD is going to take a serious look at as the progression of the new arena continues to become closer to reality.

I would agree that this is certainly nothing imminent, but one thing that needs to be considered is that IF the MV decided to expand, it may very well look to some familiar institutions that are apart of the MVFC. NDSU and SDSU, presumably, would gladly join the MV for basketball. USD, with its new arena and assuming we remain competitive in the Summit, will be right in step. Accordingly, I don't think it's necessarily a matter of being quality deficient (because who's to say a program needs to be at a certain level for X number of years to meet the MV's purported quality standard), but rather a matter of the MV actually expanding or changing its current composition. I think if the MV ever decided to mix things up, USD, SDSU and NDSU would all, realistically, receive looks (as I look into my crystal ball and assume that all three programs progress in recruiting, results, facilities, etc). |

I would like to see how many years it took UNI from the year they went D1 (I believe somewhere around 1979) to get into the Missouri Valley. It's obviously not 50 years.
As of now the Missouri Conference is the goal but that doesn't mean it will always be that way. For midwest mid majors just look at the Horizon League. They are rated ahead of the MVC in basketball in the conference Sarigan Ratings. The Horizon is ranked 11th, Missouri Valley 13th and the Summit not bad at 18th. Also consider that the Summit is losing Centenary which will significantly help the rating and Southern Utah is also leaving which will help as well. With USD hopefully getting an arena they will be a strong Summit team through time as well. The Summit could easily raise to around that same level where the MVC is right now. There is a difference between the Valley and the Summit but not as big as most would like to think. It's not like USD got blown off the floor at Creighton. In fact Creighton had to play well just to keep the game above single digits against the Yotes. That was with a nice home court advantage.
NDSU, SDSU, USD, W. Illinois and possibly UND down the road would already make the core of a good conference not just because they are good schools but because they have football which seems to help the overall stature of an athletic department and school. Alot of the Valley Basketball schools do not have football. That is the potential advantage that the Summit core that is also in the MVFC has on schools such as Drake (non schollie only) and Creighton.
USD obviously has aways to go as a school in transitioning but if the basketball arena gets built soon combined with the expanded Dakotadome and hopefull growth to follow USD is looking to be in good shape for the future. USD has advantages with academics and simply just carrying the "Thee University" of a state. There are no more than 50 that hold that distinction and it's a nice distinction to have. Alot of those schools are playing major college sports and in the FCS ranks alot of those are very successfull.
That is why I keep stressing to set the standard high, don't settle on substandard, strive to succeed and don't think just cause things used to be a certain way that they always have to be that way.

That is true to a point but UND will always be in talks about conference expansion that includes the other Dakota 3. Do you think that UND wouldn't change affiliations if the right situation came around. If UND had an invitation to a new Missouri Valley that required football and basketball for membership. Lets say S. Illinois, W. Illinois, Illinois State, Missouri State, Indiana State, Northern Iowa, SDSU, NDSU, USD, UNO & Witchita State (assuming they add football) needed UND to form their own 12 team FCS power conference I don't think they would say no. USD needs to do everything they can to make themselves as desirable and strong as possible because when it comes to future conference positioning one never knows what the possibilities may be. Remember we just beat Minnesota and could have a new state of the art basketball facility all within a 3 or 4 year span. That is why USD football needs to raise it's competitive level and basketball needs to do the same. |

Here's the deal, the MVC will want a team that can not just make the tournament, but also a team that will win a game or two in the NCAA tournament. Whenever you see the list of sleeper teams in the tournament, a MVC team is ALWAYS mentioned. UNI knocked off Kansas this past year.
The MVC isn't going to expand unless it absolutely needs to for basketball. If it does expand, it's going to be a team that can threaten for 2-3 wins in the tournament. Right now, that would be Oakland and I don't see a second team out there worthy of being in the Missouri Valley right now. USD would have to up it's game with more than just a new arena, they would have to put a sleeper team on the court year in and year out. Not even North Dakota state qualifies right now.
Yes, USD played with Creighton, but Creighton is mid-pack in the MVC right now. But teams have stepped up to take its place like Missouri State and Wichita State along with Northern Iowa. In two years, I can see Creighton back in the fold though since it's a traditionally strong conference.
The Horizon has gotten a boost from Butler as well, but they haven't been as successful as the MVC, but are building too it.
Right now, focus on the Summit and what USD can do to make itself competitive for that league.
The more you look forward the more you continue to miss what's right in front of you. This talk of the future conference is already taking away excitement from the Summmit, which is what the talk of the Summit did to the Great West for the fans. USD was SOOOOOOOOO lucky to be in a conference right away, so how about we show our respect to the GWC sometime instead of saying we are a lock for the MVC.

Excitement of the Summit? Sorry, just not that much to be excited about other than we have a conference home. Nobody said we are a lock for the Valley, far from it. There lies the problem with the Summit, you can go to any of its members message board and find comments about how they wish/can't wait until someday they will be in the Valley or Horizon or soneplace else. The Summit is a transitional conference and not a destination conference. Its instability is what has bothered me from day one.
CF, I think that would make an awesome conference: S. Illinois, W. Illinois, Illinois State, Missouri State, Indiana State, Northern Iowa, SDSU, NDSU, USD, UND, UNO & Witchita State
It is doable right now by dropping off UNO and Wichita St and inserting Youngstown, Southeast Missouri or Eastern Illinois, pick two out of three.

I don't think there's any harm speculating about conference shifts and what may or may not occur at some point down the road. I think that's pretty much par for a sports message board course. I also think many share my view on the Great West. I'm supportive of our current teams, but I can't wait to get a move on. GWC basketball simply is not a quality product. I respect the current efforts and show my support, but I AM looking ahead to the Summit, a league that I believe will dramatically change, at least in the immediate term, fan interest and the caliber of competition we see night in and night out.
