Two weeks until game day and I thought I would share this video to get a little chatter on our under matched opponent. I know media day is supposed to be all smiles and fun, but QB1 was a little bit too smiley for me. I am looking forward to "Two of the best defensive ends in our conference" (Greeney and Kam) wreaking havoc in the backfield week 1. From the video the players obviously have big expectations for themselves this season. They are saying conference championship or bust around the DSM area. I personally don't know a whole lot about this team. I see they return 7 Honorable Mention PFL players DL Nathan Clayberg, LS Brady Eckert, OL Ryan Lemke, DL Mack Marrin, DL Tanner Evans, CB/Returner Terry Wallen and OL Payson Wick.
I can see their offense giving us a few scares with all their experience and our lack of experience. They return 4 of 5 up front and its been the talk of camp that we lack depth at DL. We will need the QB of our defense (John Wessel) and his hard headed sidekick Jim Litrenta to shut them down early. On the bright side their OL seems to be lacking size. One of the players mentioned he is around 250 lbs. That is real light for a D1 linemen. Last season they averaged almost 30 ppg and racked up about 388 ypg.
As for their defense looks like they struggled a bit this past season giving up over 30 ppg and over 400 ypg. Although of the 7 returning honorable mention players 5 are on the defensive side. Let's just hope we don't go into that 3 to 4 series lull that got us in trouble last year.
I'm looking forward to this game. Can't wait for the Yotes to be back on the field and hearing that fight song play after every score!
I predict a similar score of two years ago against this opponent. 42-14 with a big start from Streveler and Simmons comes in late to tack on a few scores.

That guy was bigger than 250. Nice try.

This is one of three near must wins this year if the team is to make the playoffs. This one, Indiana State and S. Illinois all have to be wins. Well they don't have to be but if the Coyotes drop any of those three the uphill battle will probably be too large. I would be disappointed with anything less then a 17 point win but hopefully it will be in the neighborhood of 48-10.

I agree, it would be nice to see that kind of win and we should see that if we have any hopes for the year. However, all it takes is 1 point more to win and if they can do that all year, I'm good with that as you then know they learned how to win.

I personally don't think a 1 point win over Drake is going to get the job done. If we want to make the playoffs we will need to win by at least a few scores. With our schedule being top 5 most difficult in the FCS we are looking at the 5 to 7 win range. Well need those dominating out of conference wins or a FBS win over Bowling Green to boost our resume.

I'll be highly disappointed with anything less than a 3 TD victory. These guys don't even offer scholarships.

If we don't win by 60 points, I'm going to be worried.

If we don't win by 60 points, I'm going to be worried. As a fan I would love to see the Yotes come out and do that. Last year Drake lost to SDSU by 28 in Brookings - it was still a 28-14 game with 2 minutes left in Q3. Two seasons ago USD played them at home and won 52-0. The week prior Drake went to GF and played UND - only losing by 3. I would guess USD will see a fired up Drake team that does everything they can to try and keep it close at home. USD is young and this is an early game on the road. I am predicting a 30 point victory, but a closer game than that would not scare me for the rest of the season. Just want a win and all the players to stay healthy. A bigger road test will come the following week at Bowling Green.

I'm not worried about non-FCS games, fun to watch us go against the big boys, but at the end of the day those games mean nothing to me. This game against Drake will be a good determinant of how our team will perform this year. Experience at every level on both sides of the ball, but this team will go as far as the boys in the trenches take them. We need to get up big as quickly as possible in order to get the backup d-linemen some experience, seems to be some concern there.

I am with wilee on this one. I have had enough of the close wins against far inferior opponents. If the Yotes want to take the next step in this league they need to start beating down these out of conference teams. We've had the opportunity the past two seasons up big on opponents and slowly let them back in the game. Its time to step and the throat!

Seriously, enough with the "all we need to do is win by 1 point" mentality...this is Missouri Valley Football people, we play to embarrass our opponents, we should win this game by 60 and not let a single point on the board.

SDSU was co-champion of the MVFC las year and didn't win by 60. I would love to see USD break the school scoring record in a single game against them, but if it is a multiple score win, it won't be time to jump from the top of the closest building. USD pasted them by over 50 two seasons ago and it had ZERO predictive value for the season. SDSU only won by 28 last year and went on to have a good conference season.

The point I'm trying to make is that we should wipe the field with these nerds, bottom line.
