Made it back from Des Moines. Was great to see so many Yote fans make the trip, after the game my hotel was brimming with Coyote apparel. From my spot I estimated it to be about a 40-60 split in favor of the blue. That's literally the only thing that was in Drake's favor last night though.
New names came up early and often. I love those first times I hear an unfamiliar name on the PA. Falck, Case, and the RBs were on my radar, but Powell? I don't think I ever heard that kid's name mentioned in any of the season previews. Yet here he is, making two picks and running one back.
Going into this I thought travelling to Drake was a bit below us, akin to a Big Ten team playing at a MAC school, but I very much enjoyed this additional game within comfortable driving distance of Vermillion. I'd make the trip again in a heartbeat but would prefer to see our administration get a 2-for-1 out of the deal. Straight up trading home games with a non-scholarship school is mildly embarrassing. I do like having Drake on the schedule though. Easy game to work the kinks out, and it counts towards playoff consideration.

Red shirts pulled: Kai Henry Kody Kase Nathan Schultz Tyler Ciurej Joe Kordus
That is what I count from the box score listing participants in the game. Anyone see omissions? Kinda thought there would be more.

CF: If USD doesn't kill Drake, I will be concerned.
*USD pummels Drake by 70 points*
CF: USD needs to stop scheduling this team, it makes us look bad.
Feel free to just enjoy the victory, CF.

Take-aways from Drake game (certainly a game like this is tough to evaluate but I will try my best):
The USD OL is improved but needs to play much better for USD to have the type of year we all hope for. Drakes DL was probably the best part of their team, and I would have liked to have seen a more consistent performance against them. My favorite play by these guys was ironically a penalty. I liked seeing Nick Jensen get in the mix when one of the Drake players hit Steveler out of bounds. Go protect your QB big fella! This unit needs to be a little nastier all around and I am happy to see that (as long as it isn't every game) There appeared to be some mental errors - allowing the DE at times a free release to hit the QB or RB in the backfield. Cannot have that. The younger players that came in to play all looked promising too. True freshman Ciurej is going to be a physical presence for several years. I will predict he ends up playing regularly by year end. As he gets more comfortable he could be rotated in at OG or OC. Chisholm and Morris also looked good in relief at OG. Was impressed with their get off and low pad level. Bianchi played both OG and OT and looked good as well. He will be a good utility lineman and I would think will get quite a bit of playing time this year.
Streveler - it is easy to take his high-level play for granted, but he was impressive. His throws were on the mark. As he has success throwing defenses will be tempted to not honor his running ability as much. Simmons is just about as good. I found myself thinking we are in a unique spot where our best player may also be the one we could most afford to lose in the event of an injury. The ball just explodes from Simmons arm - very impressive. Then on the second play we all got to see a tremendous 40 yard plus run.
RBs - this group is concerning. Kai Henry IMO is the clear best we have. He was the most productive and the only RB that showed a consistent spark and punch when he hit the LOS. In going back and watching the game again, he also was stepping up and blocking with great power. I would put Klett, Frederick, and Falaniko all even behind Henry. Frederick is the most experienced, but his size limits him if the blocking is not there. Our OL needs to be a little more dominant to allow for Frederick to get the yards USD needs, otherwise he may struggle. My guess this week is we will see USD get the ball to Frederick in space more than what we saw last week.
WRs - this group is just as advertised. Best group USD has put on the field. Hopefully Van Roekel is not injured - he did not come back after his Q1 TD. Looked like a knee injury to me. Anyone know how severe and if he is out? Kody Case and Levi Falk are going to be impact additions to this group. What I really like about having this many WRs that can play at a high-level is that they all have to up their game to get on the field. That constant competition will make them better. They know they need to not have drops otherwise they will get buried on the depth chart. USD did get some penalties blocking on the perimeter - that is one of the biggest reasons getting Van Roekel back is very important. Beyond having great hands, he is a tremendous blocker.
DL/DEs - this group continues to get more talented and athletic. I think we will see tremendous production out of this group this year. They are undersized but full of ability. Greenfield is an animal. Schultz has the ingredients to grow into an all-MVFC type interior DL. He will make some plays this year, but give this kid an off-season with Jevon and great nutrition and he is going to really be impressive. Headlee had some good moments in the interior as well. USD needs him to continue to progress. He has good strength at the point of attack. Being a smaller group physically, they will have to make up for it by rotating players in and out and playing with even more urgency.
LBers - None of the LBers that played really stood out to me as head and shoulders above the rest. Good consistent play by all of them.
DBs - We are in great shape at these positions. The #1 corners are studs and the #2s looked very good too. The Safeties all were stepping up and hitting. The new impact players Powell and transfer Mike Johnson are very good. Both are hitters. Powell also looked great on KO coverage - I really like seeing that as I think those plays really reveal effort.
Punter - 4 kicks inside the 20! Good to see.
Kicker - doesn't look like a really strong leg, but 11/11 on xtra points. I think USD's kicking game will be good enough this year and I think the added speed on the team will help in coverage.
Our returners looked good - Paul Anderson was close to breaking away on a KO - and Kody Case looked really solid returning punts.
I left the first game feeling much the same as I did before - this team will go as far as the OL and DL/DEs allow them to go. If those two units make steady improvements (and avoid injury) USD is going to have the type of season the optimists are predicting. If not, the pessimists will be right.

Or are all the team shows being replaced by the new nightly program? It's no longer a standalone show. I don't know all the details on Midco Sports Tonight, but I was led to believe that the college teams would be prominent in the broadcast.

The Coyotes played well but I was never going to make a judgement about the team based on this game. The good news is that from here on out we can make an honest assessment of the Coyotes. I really didn't even consider this much of a legitimate game and for me the season starts next week.

Dear Coyote Football Alumni, It was a great opening week win as your Coyotes scored 56 first half points and ran away with a 77-7 win over Drake. Quarterback Chris Streveler lead the offense with 5 touchdowns passes and one rushing touchdown all in the first half. Four different running backs carried the ball with true freshmen Kai Henry topping all rushers with 75 yards on 12 carries. Ten different players caught passes as Streveler and back-up quarterback Austin Simmons combined to go 21-31 for 248 yards and six touchdowns. The defense held an experienced Drake offense to 147 total yards including -1 yards rushing for the day. The defense also forced four turnovers including an interception for a touchdown by redshirt freshman Phil Powell. Our guys played with great effort and enthusiasm. A lot of young players got quality experience as we were able to play over 60 players with many playing at least one half. Read more about the game and the Missouri Valley honors for quarterback Chris Streveler and punter Brady Schutt at www.goyotes.com. Our competition increases immediately as we travel to Bowling Green this next week. The Falcons opened their season this past week with a hard fought loss to Michigan State. We are also excited to open our home schedule versus North Dakota on September 16th. They are currently ranked in the FCS top ten along with three of this year’s Valley opponents; Youngstown State, who we play on October 1st at home, NDSU who we play on November 11th in Fargo and SDSU who we host on November 18th. Our 2017 schedule includes a total of seven teams that are currently ranked in the FCS top twenty five and six who made last year’s national playoffs. It will be a great challenge for our young football team but we will continue to hit the challenge head on. This fall we will be hosting a reunion of the 1972 USD football team that won a conference title. That team coached by Joe Salem will be recognized prior to our game against Southern Illinois on October 28th. The weekend will include a dinner Friday night, a special tailgate on Saturday and recognition during the game. Last year’s reunion of the 1986 team was a great success so mark your calendars now. Our game with Bowling Green game will be carried on ESPN 3 so if you aren’t making the trip you can catch the game on video. Hope to see you in the Dome for the home opener on the 16th. Let’s sell out that first home game. Fight South Dakota, Bob Nielson Head Football Coach University of South Dakota (605) 658-5558

The old Coyote Corner shows could be viewed on youtube and many of us might enjoy seeing the current shows.

Impact Player of the Week: I happened to be at the game this past weekend in Drake. Kody Case really impressed me. For a true freshman to come into our deep receiving core and get the kind of playing time he did says a lot to me about our staff's confidence in him. He was kind of a do it all player in high school at a small school in Iowa. He made a nice little 23 yd TD catch to start off his career. Also, he was back returning punts early in the game. Punt returning is one of the toughest things to do in football, but also has the opportunity to change a game. Look forward to seeing him play a lot of games in the Vermillion and white uniform!
