I think it is fair to say that this game will feature a top 5 FCS defense going against a top 5 FCS offense. Something has to give there. Usually when these types of matchups occur it tends to favor the defense. We will see just how good both of those top units are because both will be tested. Second halves haven't been great for the defense but the Coyotes average giving up 5.5 points per game in the first half and 0.75 points per game in the first quarter. Those are some pretty impressive numbers. On the flip side the Coyotes are scoring an average of 33 points a game in the first HALF. So on average this year the Coyotes are ahead 33-5.5 at halftime. That is a crazy number. As much as I hate the second half troubles I would rather have that problem then to not be able to get ahead in a game, especially when both teams are fully within their game plans before the game situation causes a change in strategy. Other than Western Illinois, what is this constant barrage of "2nd half hasn't been great" stuff? You make it sound like every game we break down WIU made a run...that's it. And we won the game. This years team isn't last years team. It's this years team. Don't create something that isn't there. If two teams are evenly matched there's bound to be the pendulum aspect of the game. It's called BIG MO. It happens in basketball as well. Give this constant criticism of we have 2nd half troubles a rest please.

YSU fans, Is your starting QB out for this game? What's the scoop with your backup? He managed the game well against the bunnies but does not look like a great passer.

YSU fans, Is your starting QB out for this game? What's the scoop with your backup? He managed the game well against the bunnies but does not look like a great passer. Hunter Wells is "doubtful" but I suspect "out" for something like 3-4 weeks. Missed 2 games with a "slightly" separated shoulder and played half a dozen plays before going out after falling on the same shoulder again. Mays is not nearly the passer, but is a vastly superior runner to Wells. He is accurate with the throws but no depth. You'll see LOTS of runs and dink & dunk passes if you start to edge up the LB's into the box. TEs RBs and WRs all have talent. You don't read or see much about them, because we don't throw a ton and we spread it around, but they can be effective getting 1st downs. If we get 4 yds are first down, you are going to lose. That's not a very bold statement, as it is usually true at all levels, but if you stop 1st down and keep us in passing situations, you should win. IMO, it comes down to our OL vs your DL & LBs on 1st down. We are big, strong, and physical. (just as SDSU on Pitt) If you can match up to that, you'll be fine. If you can't, we'll be fine. Bet the "under," we don't score much and we don't give up much.

Well you get the revenge victories over your last two games, congratulations. With those two wins, you have created a huge game with Youngstown St, now two highly rated teams. Win this FCS game of the week and your story could slowly start to unfold.

The USD story has been bubbling under for a while It’s a team that has been building. It’s been recruiting, coaching and winning one step at a time. They have put the dagger in the heart of UND football, a program that has done the opposite. The off field problems this Spring, as much to blaim as injuries, led to UNDs collapse as a competitive team. NDSU has as many injuries as UND yet they remain in contention.
It’s no surprise what’s happening at USD. This is the most exciting football town in the country this weekend. It’s part of the Dakota Big 3: NDSU, SDSU and USD. These 3 schools rule the MVFC and maybe all of FCS. Saturday a huge rival to all of that will take the field at The Dakota Dome to help sort it all out.
It’s going to be a decisive game. YSU is a school that’s been playing at a national level for some time making this a statement game. This hurdle has to be jumped for USD to take the next step to a couple of championships: MVFC & The FCS national championship.
If this all holds together, and I don’t like looking ahead, the Dakota Big 3 are set to play a round robin of the biggest football games ever to be played in the Dakotas.
One game at a time GO YOTES,

Because you live in a state that borders North Dakota, it doesn't give you any bragging rights. Let's talk after Saturday.

Brass,
Fair enough. We are in unchartered waters for our program and as I've said all along, every game we play we are capable of winning and capable of losing. Fans can get a little over zealous with instant success. I think aldewitt's point are the steps that have been taking in laying the foundation to be where we find ourselves today. For USD, the fact that a game of this magnitude is being played with us in it is a source of pride that hasn't been felt in a very long time.
You're correct, 4 games into a season doesn't give us, or you, or anyone the right to puff put our chest and declare us as national contenders. Even if we have success, that has to be parlayed into success in years to come for us to be in talk of "ruling" the league. We are light years from that. In fairness, I also feel he gave YSU the respect it deserves in terms of wins and losses and contending for both conference and national titles. That's why he said it's a statement game. Since 1986, USD has not been on the national stage like it is now.
I have the utmost respect for your teams potential. They are chucked with great athletes. What I don't have respect for is your coach. My opinion, and it's only my opinion, is that Coach Nielson is doing this the correct way and Coach Pelini is not. Long term success comes from a solid foundation, short term success can be ascertained in a number of ways, many of which we wouldn't like or accept in Vermillion.
All that being said, it is fun to be in the conversation for contention, and a hell of a lot more fun to be one of two teams in such a big game this weekend. I have no idea if we can hold up against the size and physicality of YSU, but I know one thing for certain...our young team will play their asses off in an attempt to validate any discussion about titles of which USD is in the conversation.
In closing, you're right....let's talk after Saturday.

His perspective is a bit different, and he is certainly hoping for a 'winner-take-all' USD/NDSU game in a month or so. (I guess I am too, now that I say it.)

Heck even with USD's poor-to-mediocre existence in the MVFC we are 2-2 out of the last 4 with them. The Panthers have all but ceded the conference to the Dakotas, YSU is the next in line to do so, then ISUr. In the coming years, if UND can get their crap together, the takeover will be complete and the Dakotas will have completely heisted the conference from the traditional powers. I wouldn't be shocked if we decided to split off and form Summit Football at some point. YSU heads east to the CAA and we take on a few associate members from the old MVFC. And you know who I give all credit to for this? The Bison. NDSU has raised the bar so damn high (as they have always done) that in order to even compete in this region of the country you have to field a national championship caliber team. Look at the MVFC now, half the teams in the FCS top 10 are from this conference. The only sad part is that we now begin the process of beating the crap out of each other and knocking each other down the polls and out of the playoffs. If the FCS playoffs was truly based on merit the NCAA would take the conference champions from each other conference and ALL the MVFC schools and hold a playoff. I bet even lowly Mo State could win a playoff game against some of the weak pretenders that "earn" playoff spots.
