Coyote Nation is growing, but I had a thought today about how much I do to attend, purchase tickets, and donate to USD and it's athletics. I am a Howling Pack member and USD Alumni member. I make some games (usually 3 a year), but honestly it seems like I have so much going on with weddings of close friends and family events during the fall.
Now is the time for our fan base to get more into the atmosphere and games. There is a great base of fans who never miss a game, fans like me who cannot make a lot of games but follow along very closely, and the fair-weather fans. I have to miss DDays this year because I am in a wedding, of two USD grads! When I think of my close friends many are USD grads and many are State grads. I also know many of them who went to SDSU for their undergrad, but are doctors or lawyers obtaining degrees from USD. I will tell you that they are all Jacks fans. Many of the women USD grads root for State because their husbands or the crowd roots for them. The rest of them will make a game here or there and are sports fans, but don't really follow or attend much. It is our job to make sure that we make more games and get these friends to attend them with us. The more we can grow the fan base the better. Going forward I will make a point to try and get these friends to attend who are fans, but will not go out of their way to purchase a ticket and attend the game. I will purchase a few extra tickets and tell them to come and have a good time. I have done this in the past and they have all enjoyed the game. They are honestly either too "busy" or don't care enough to make the plans themselves. If we can get a few more fans each to relight or for the first time light the flame in Coyote athletics, the better off our University will be.

The buzz around Coyote football is much much better then it was in the 90's and early 2000's. I remember attending many games in the dome where the main grandstand was at best half full. I am not sure what the announced attendance was but 3K would be a pretty good guess. There was no tailgate what-so-ever. I have always loved going to live games but now a days it is much more of an event rather then just a game. So if the overall interest level in fans going to games in person is down from 20 years ago, it is up for Coyote football.

Fan attendance didn't figure into the equation when my son was picking his school. Given the basic of a commensurate offer with others he had, the bottom line was he wanted to play for a winning program that he felt was going to win a national championship... and believe it or not... he felt USD is on a fast track to it. Not to pat him on the back, but he's always had a very naturally high football IQ and I think he's right. Coming from WI with the Packers, Badgers and calling Arrowhead HS home... games are always packed but I never take that for granted. I've lived too many years of Packer football under Devine, Starr and Gregg and infanti where you couldn't give tickets away. Also lived too many years behind the Badgers coaches before Alverez was hired. Did WI even have a football team then??? When Wolf/Holmgren and Alverez each took the stage... everything changed. Winning wasnt a fluke. It wasn't a fluke because they brought so much more than good coaching. They brought the winning SYSTEM that remained far after they left. It's not this or that its IN THE WAY YOU APPROACH AND DO EVERYTHING!!! That will remain after Nielson s gone... look at WIU??? Look at Sherman and McCarthey and the 60k waiting list... look at WI with Bielemma (probably butchered that name) & now Christ. Sure you may have hiccups... but they're few and far between. My point is... it really is the time to start believing. Will we won this weekend? I'm guessing yes but we could lose... but that shouldn't detract from my point. USD has arrived, will be a perpetual power because a winner came in, taught them how to have a system that produces wins and my suggestion is to get those season tickets now because you won't be able to a year from now when USD is the sweetheart game everybody wants to go to on Saturdays. Btw...i predict the dome is way too small... you have to at least get it to 15k or 20k of seating. You build it, they will come. The dome plans have to move forward and have to include adding seats. IT'S HAPPENING!!! Don't limit the team by limiting the facilities. That 12th man is way important. If you don't, you're pretty much telling the fans as well as future recruits how good you really want our expect to be. You have to live it _alls to the wall! Go big or go home!

I never have, but I've heard of plenty of bunny people who graduate in Brookings and then matriculate to Vermillion for an advanced degree. Why is that?

... and I don't know how the FCS shares revenue but the first additions/ remodeling to both facilities were always adding private boxes as that revenue goes 100% to the team and isn't shared. Need to build the supply line along with the 12th man.

Look at what state college did they built that huge stadium and basically only expect to sell it out for the yote and the bison game. If rather have consistent sellouts in a smaller venue than have a stadium at 60% capacity for most of the games. Another thought on attendance, for long term attendance growth, I think a lot will depend on the general strength of the conference. As long as the coyotes can remain a highly ranked team and the MVFC continues to have several teams in the top 10, the attendance will continue to improve. A #6 vs #3 will always be a bigger draw than watching even a top ranked coyote squad beat up on a far inferior team.

I personally do not know of any. That would be like eating a steak dinner then having a stale poptart for dessert. Just doesn't make sense.

I've been into commercial construction for almost my entire career on a sizable scale... without too many changes to the structure...id say 18 private boxes with center coaches offices and adding 4500 seats above is reasonable. Bring the home crowd to 14.5 with ur special people that call USD home is very doable...AND PERFECT!!! You just have to bring the right team in... not one that exists for their pocketbook but one that understands the client. And I am not proposing anything here.. I'm in it for USD. My son is in...I am in wholeheartedly!

I have always wanted to do this and I wanted to take the time to post what I found out. I used the actual ticket purchasing area on the website and counted the number the seats in section G and A which equal 784 and 222 respectively and I counted the potential wheelchair spots in that as well so I did not short change this.
I looked at all section and sections B,C,D,F,G,H all seem to be the same size. There may be a few more seats available in sections B and H because of the bleacher seats in the upper half of each of those sections but it wouldn't be a big difference.
So here is the tabulation by section for the grand stand
A = 222 B = 830 (adding 46 seats for bleachers but this is an estimate) C = 784 D = 784 E = 600 (estimated because of it being a slightly smaller section) F = 784 G = 784 H = 830 (adding 46 seats for beachers but this is an estimate) I = 222 (which look identical to section A)
Entire Grand Stand = 5840 - If you want to add 100 seats for the patio deck near section I that would be 5940 so that would probably be the max capacity of the grand stand.
By looking at the photos of the dome I would guess at most the west bleachers would hold 1500.
So by my estimate that makes the dome capacity for football at 7440 which is pretty much right on for what I thought it might be.
What this does is legitimize the WNIT final game attendance which I believe was announced at 7400 plus change. That attendance announcement was probably pretty much right on. Unfortunately for football most of the crowds are actually close to 6,500-7,000 then they are the 9,500 that is being announced with a near capacity crowd.
So for actual seating capacity to be expanded to 15,000 for football the west side grand stand would have to be able to hold at least 9,000 considering that you would no longer have the west side bleachers. I don't think it would be possible to get to that type of number. When you consider actual attendance at Coyote football games which is generally about 7,000 when it is full that dome probably does not need to expand to anything near 15,000 seats. I would say a legitimate expansion to 12,000 is probably more realistic and would allow for about a 40% increase in attendance. I am not sure of the current rules but to go to FBS some day if it requires a 15K sized stadium I am not sure if that would even be possible in the current dome.

No way to quantify it, but I contest your estimation of 1500 on the west bleachers. I would say it's closer to 3K than it is to 1500

No way to quantify it, but I contest your estimation of 1500 on the west bleachers. I would say it's closer to 3K than it is to 1500 There is no way the west end would hold that many, especially since it shrank down a few years ago. If it would hold that many then that would be over half the capacity of the east grand stand. The students are not packed like sardines over there either. It looks like they sit pretty comfortably.

Here is the photo of the current configuration of the west side. Compare it to the main grand stand and make you own opinion.
