Shouldn't have to hide it. Two of my kids went to USD and were regulars in the student tailgate area until one of them just about got hit in the face by a flying bottle. They tailgated with us and friends over the last few years. We send our kids off to college to get an education, in loco parentis. What is the difference between a party and a tailgate? We now have to regulate something that was not regulated.

I would estimate only 200 students there approximately one hour before game time. Completely understand that universities move to control bad behavior. I'm hoping the student participation improves going forward. My guess is the students were 'sending a message' that they didn't like the tailgate arrangements with the low turnout.

That could be part of it. My guess is it's more a product of general lack of interest for this game. Southern Illinois is a team that most students, unless they've been a pretty active follower of the MVFC, probably don't know much or anything about. It's not a geographic rival like UNI or UND and it's not the farm school or the bison. The way out schedule works out, every year student interest dips in the middle. Students are excited for a new season in September. Then DDAYS is in early October. Then we have this 3 or 4 week lull before we start playing teams that the average student knows at least a little about. There is still very much a casual fan mentality in the student body. They're not really the coyote crazies they claim to be, but I am still thrilled to see them there. I was very pleased at the ISUb game to see the student section as full as it was, given the other options for entertainment available on a Saturday. I'm sure it will be packed for the state game. My hope is students will have enough fun tailgating that it will carry over to our home playoff games and into next season as well. But long term they need to bring all the tailgates together.

This move was being contemplated long before it happened. The tailgate area the students had was simply too small, they were limited on how many vehicles could fit in there, and the crowded area made for a bad situation where it started to get unruly. The new tailgate area for the students is meant to give them more room for more vehicles and more room to tailgate. Nothing nefarious really, just trying to accommodate the student's needs. I don't know why they would protest. I thought student turnout was poor because that's just our student fan base.
If the students don't want Rose Court (site of the old trailer park) the adults would be happy to take it back. We had some of our best tailgates over there years ago.

Another possible reason for poor student attendance last week was the fact that it was parents weekend at the school. All the greek houses were hosting students and their families plus there were some other activities around campus for families. And, I'm sure, a few students went home to do some pheasent hunting. Not much energy in the Dome at all during the game.
