I believe Tom Nieman pointed out about a week ago that there were already around 24 7 win teams in FCS. I truly believe if NDSU beats Illinois State we would be the 5th and final team to get in if the other games play out like they should. If memory serves me correctly, when the redbirds got in as a 6-5 team they had an FBS win over Northwestern in their back pocket along with a strong finish and at least 4 wins in the conference. We have a lesser FBS win in our resume, but FBS win nonetheless. 4 wins in conference and a road win at Western Illinois. Redbirds beat NDSU and we lose, we won’t get in. Agree that if we fell to 6th place we are at home. We'd be better than a lot of teams in the field, but no one in the bottom half of their conference should be alive for a national championship. Tonight I have been looking around at the national standings, I did not realize just how many teams are already at 7 wins. Still, there will be 7-4 teams getting at-large bids and we would have a resume that beats nearly all of the others.

Some of those teams have D2 wins though and the Ivy League and I think two other leagues don't participate in the playoffs because they play into some bowl game scenario.

What happens if we win AND the redbirds win? That is the scenario that could really test the committee. That would have NDSU 9-2; USD, SDSU, & Western all at 8-3. UNI & Illinois State at 7-4. How do they decide who to leave out if they won’t take 6 frim a 10 team league? I don’t know how likely that scenario is, but it is certainly possible.

They will take 4 from the Valley ....right? Depends. 5 went two years ago. 4 went last year, but only 4 had at least 6 wins.

I have not checked to see how many of those schools are holding D2 wins. I have only been looking at conferences with realistic shots at earning bids (no Ivy, MEAC, SWAC, Patriot, Pioneer, NEC, OVC).

UNI would be a co-champ, no way the committee ever leaves them out. Illinois State would likely hold wins better than any other 7-4 teams out there. I think they'd have to give the conference 6 bids. That, or really penalize UNI for playing so poorly in the non-conference.

It's only a few teams with a D2 win who are in the hunt for a playoff spot, but if a team happens to be on the bubble every little thing helps or hurts. For the 'Yotes there is a very simple solution: beat the bunnies on Saturday. I'm highly anticipating a great game and an even better outcome on Saturday. We are extremely tough in the dome.

It goes without saying that if we win on Saturday a lot of these things take care of themselves.

USD should be seeded if they beat the Jacks. I would think the SOS is just as good, the losses aren't as bad. USD would own the head to head over both teams they would be tied with at 8-3 from the Valley. If SDSU loses to the Coyotes there is no way they should be considered ahead of them.
