Go to an NHL game and just copy their song selection. They have a ton of small breaks and from my experience they are filled with great heavy music that keeps the mood on edge.

There are bands and songs that transcend generations. I was driving down the road with my 15 year old when the Beastie Boys came on the radio and he asked me to turn it up. He even knew all the words to "Intergalactic". Kind of surprised me. His hockey team listens to AC/DC and Metallica in the locker room, these are teenagers. He once asked me if I had heard this group before, proceeds to pull up an NWA track. I'm like, yeah, I knew Eazy-E, way, way, way before you were born. They should play the best metal song ever "Blackened" by Metallica. Anyone that doesn't know that song should be banned from entering any way.
