Agree about missed opportunities, but I’d rather see those “low” balls the receivers missed vs “high” balls that turn into INT’s. Our QB was playing smart and it just about worked. You think he threw the balls low on purpose? Really. LOL

Defense - Awesome. Nothing else to say. Offense - Not so good. Need to complete passes. 43 percent completion ratio is just bad. We need to be able to run the ball more.
Someone stated that he completed many long passes. He had a 30 and a 20 yarder. Everything else was short. Don't need to complete long passes all the time. Need to move the ball which didn't happen in the 2nd half. Missed open receivers that would of moved the ball.
Stop with the power 5 crap .They had them beat. If this was against SDSU or NDSU everyone would be going crazy and not making excuses. Bottom line is you can't go 3 and out more often then not and win a game.
I am sure next week when we kick the crap out of UNC everyone will tell me how dumb I am. But beat a real team then open your mouth. Don't care if you like this or not but it's the facts that are talking not me.

You think he threw the balls low on purpose? Really. LOL I don’t know how many of them were simply off-target, how many were from forced/rushed passes, or how many (if any) were intentionally thrown low in order to protect the ball. What I do know for sure is that our QB threw over 50 passes and committed zero interceptions. That’s a guy that knows how to protect the football.

I know they should have won the game, but let's keep this in perspective. You don't like moral victories and neither do I, but don't forget what happened 3 years ago when we went down to Manhattan.

Back home from the long trip. Judging by the in-game updates I'd guess most of you were there too? That heat made for one sweltering tailgate and start to the game.
It hurts that we let an actual victory get away in a game where only moral victories were expected. I guess it makes those moral victories that much stronger? 0-1 is where I thought we would be today, and I'm a lot more confident in the team than I was going into the weekend, so I really can't complain.
I need to watch a replay of the game. From my seats behind the endzone I had a very hard time telling who was doing what out there. It never felt like the action was on my end either. It looked like Simmons was lacking in accuracy, and obscenely lucky to have zero interceptions. Can't believe we had him throw it 56 times. Good on our line to let him do so unbothered. Defense played lights out, only gave up 1 TD on the day, but the offense was not there when we needed to close these guys out. Complete opposite of what I expected from our units.
Anyone else remember losing to these guys 34-0 in 2015? We've come a long way, and things keep looking up!

Simmons’ completion % needs improvement. I thought he was overthrowing receivers early, but settled in a little better later. There were a lot of drops also, I had 7 by my count. Against that D-line and those DBs, in his first start as ‘the Man’, it was a decent performance.
I think Coach will have something to say about missed opportunities on offense and putting teams away from the offensive side of the ball in practice this week.

QB Analysis is natural. Perhaps not fair to compare after one game. Streveler is an all-time great not just at USD but in the FCS. Simmons was in his first start as "the guy". I chose two games to compare - both games where USD threw the ball 55+ times and both against good defensive teams on the road. Simmons vs KSU '18 and Streveler vs Illinois State '17.
Simmons vs KSU '18 24/56 (42%) for 257 yards 1 TD / 0 INT/ long completion of 34 yards - 6 different receivers caught balls - 4 drives that were 3 and out
Over 20 yard completions (3 for 74 yards total) - 34, 20, 20 10-19 yard completions (8 for 107 yards total) - 12, 13, 17, 15, 10, 10, 18, 12 0-9 yard completions (13 for 76 yards total) - 5, 6, 3, 5, 5, 7, 7, 7, 6, 8, 5, 5, 7
Streveler vs Illinois State '17 39/63 (62%) for 440 yards 2 TD / 2 INT / long completion of 50 yards - 10 different receivers caught balls - 5 drives ended with 3 and out (or turnover) (When you add up the numbers below they add up to 42 completions for 493 yards - the reason I think this doesn't match the offical stat line above is that three of the passes from the play by play archived notes were later recorded as runs due to them being lateral passes, but that is just a guess. I used the play by play data on USD's website for anyone that wants to double check). Regardless, this gives everyone a good idea for comparison sake.
Over 20 yard completions (4 for 120 yards total) - 50, 26, 22, 22 10-19 yard completions (24 for 294 yards total) - 10, 13, 16, 11, 11, 10, 16, 11, 12, 12, 10, 18, 11, 12, 13, 12, 14, 12, 11, 11, 10, 14, 13, 11 0-9 yard completions (14 for 79 yards total) - 3, 7, 7, 2, 2, 2, 9,9, 8, 7, 6, 8, 0, 9
It is always interesting to see the numbers and compare how they match up with one's perception of how it was originally perceived when just watching as a fan.
Simmons ability to increase his completion percentage and distribute the ball to multiple receivers (using all his weapons) will be key in his development in my opinion. I do think against KSU the coaches were utilizing the TEs in protection more than what they did against Illinois St and that is why we did not see passes to the TEs downfield like we saw last year against Illinois State.

My take on this game is that this was a textbook example of how important special teams is! That return for a touchdown by Zuber got the 49, ppp KState fans back in the game. As most of you know a crowd can be considered the 12th man. The delay of games on offense I’m sure were partly due to the noise of the crowd. Our offense is a tempo offense and those delay of games threw them off kilter a bit. Remember cramp gate last season by the bunnies? That was exactly what their game plan was...to disrupt the offenses tempo. I am super disappointed we didn’t come out with a win but we played our hearts out and if there are fans that don’t believe in this coaching staff 110% then they need to check themselves. We are going to be a force in the MO Valley and I’m beyond excited to see the progress and success of this team. As for Simmons he will learn from some missed opportunities just as the rest of the team will learn from any mistakes! I just pray the fans show up and sell out the dome every game! This team deserves it!!!

After a lot of driving and finally getting a chance to watch the game again here are my takeaways. First and foremost there are no moral victories, we had a chance to steal a win from a very solid Big XII team. They made mistakes and we capitalized, that is what good teams do. They made adjustments to our team and the 2nd half was very different than the first, but in the end, we had a chance right up to the last play. It will be interesting to watch KSU this year to help gauge this performance.
On Defence, I thought we were much better than I expected. The D-line was outstanding all game including any question we had regarding the interior lineman. Players kept leverage, limited any running lanes, and did a very nice job of collapsing the pocket and getting solid pressure. For me, the best part was the depth we saw as the staff rotated in players to stay fresh and we never saw a drop in performance. In the past, I have been critical of the LB unit in the past, but they had a very nice game led by Alex Gray. Hopefully, Coker is not out for long, but Joanis looked very good in his place. Cochrane had a very solid game at the MLB. We all know we are solid at safety, and even with Johnson out for this game, we looked great. Powell is a turnover machine! We also know our depth at corner is a concern going into the game, and with Fredrick out until game 3 and the loss of Armstead there was a greater concern, but clearly, Collins Jr. is the real deal and Tisdale and Jackson looked solid. Still a thin position and with all that youth there will be mistakes throughout the year, but we should only get better with experience.
On Offense, it all starts with the QB. I am surprised by any criticism of Simmons performance. Yes, there is room for improvement, but did anyone expect him to be Streveler 2.0 in his first game as the No. 1 QB? Anyone remember Streveler's first season and the occasional poor decisions and poor throws on his out routes which led to opposing interceptions? Simmons' arm was on display all night on one of the harder throws in the game, the out route. He was strong and on target. His throws downfield were off target and clearly, he needs to improve his timing and touch on these passes, but let's not forget this was a solid KSU defense he was up against. I know the running game was not want we wanted to see, but since we are an RPO offense I can only assume whatever Simmons was reading presnap or after the snap guided him to the pass more often than the run. Expect that to change and we will see much more from Henry and Klett in the future. Both looked strong, just limited chances. I still love our depth at WR, can't say enough about the performance of Falck. Don't be surprised if every week we see a different receiver have a breakout game, we are a nightmare for opposing D coordinators. For me, the offensive performance of the night was the overall play of the O-line. With Johnson out with a practice week injury, Bradon Schneider stepped in was was a beast for his first collegiate game. This unit played strong all night, did a terrific job of picking up blitzes and kept a solid pocket for Simmons. This unit will only improve and look for them to create solid holes for the running game as well.
On special teams, we need to improve. I felt our kick coverage was average all game and eventually led to a big return. Our returns looked good, and I will not be surprised to see us get our own TDs from this unit during the year. The kicking game has some holes, Schutt had had good distance all night just needs consistency with hang time. We need to convert field goals, no answers how to fix that? The loss of long snapper Godfrey was tough, looked liked he hurt an arm on an attempted tackle. Kudos to the staff to have a freshman backup ready to go. Not sure who the backup is if Godfrey is out for a while?
Finally, I can't say enough about the coaching staff. They had this team ready to play and they were not intimidated, but instead came in expecting to win. Our improved depth and talent are clear as we were able to absorb any injuries and the next man up stepped in an played with no drop in performance. It was also clear the work in the strength room is showing as we held our own all night. In the end, it was still a loss but my optimism for the rest of the season is very high.

I thought Morrison did a very good job as a backup! Remember a few years ago all the problems we had with long snappers?

Foe those of you who weren't at or listened to the Coyote radio show tonight, Coach Nielson gave an update on injuries. Isaac Armstead is doubtful for this weekend, wasn't sure about Dalton Godfrey, they hope to have Alex Coker back this Saturday and the others were heat related. Any injury news is never good news, but it sounded like there were no season ending catastrophes anyway. Glass half full.

Glass half full, indeed. Does anyone recall Armsteads injury ? If I remember correctly, someone said his arm was in a sling afterward.
