...Simmons ability to increase his completion percentage and distribute the ball to multiple receivers (using all his weapons) will be key in his development in my opinion.... I defended Simmons' lack of INT in an earlier post, but I do have concerns about his completion percentage. Mainly because I don't know what the cause of it was. If it truly was primarily an accuracy problem, then ... playing devil's advocate... I don't see that getting substantially better. QB's can improve accuracy a little with experience, but there are limits to that as well. I just hope that there are multiple factors that are more likely to improve, like familiarity between him and the receivers, timing, opponent etc. I think certain offensive systems, like this one, are just better at getting lots of guys open, which has a huge affect on completion %.

I've had questions about his accuracy for a while, but it hasn't been a concern because the sample size is too small and he hasn't been able to be "the guy" yet. What I saw on Saturday was similar to what I was worried about from his games against Illinois State and Southern Illinois the past couple years. Couple of highlights, weighed down by a bunch of missed attempts and lack of running through options. Wait and see where the next couple games against competition more on our level takes us.
(I don't want anyone to think I am calling him a bad quarterback or anything, but he certainly has a lot of room for improvement. I say what I say because I believe the sky is the limit for him.)

(I don't want anyone to think I am calling him a bad quarterback or anything, but he certainly has a lot of room for improvement. I say what I say because I believe the sky is the limit for him.) I'm certainly no expert on QB development, but I know someone who is: footballscoop.com/news/mike-leach-quarterback-isnt-accurate-shouldnt-recruit/quote:“The thing that’s amazing to me, is that after all of high school he’s not accurate, and now all of a sudden you’re special and you’re going to make him accurate? And then after college he’s not accurate, and you’re special and you’re going to make him accurate? I just haven’t seen that happen. I’ve seen guys improve, but they don’t all of a sudden become accurate.” Like you, I'm hopeful that this is not the issue. Not turning the ball over is critically important, and he seems to be pretty good at that. But if it's simply that his accuracy is off, then I would start to worry.

"Simmons vs KSU '18 24/56 (42%) for 257 yards 1 TD / 0 INT/ long completion of 34 yards - 6 different receivers caught balls - 4 drives that were 3 and out"
Simmons stats from KSU. It was stated earlier in the thread somebody counted 7 dropped passes. I also saw way too many dropped passes. I didn't count them, so I'll just go with the 7 number. If the receivers catch the dang ball when it hits their hands that completion percentage goes to 31/56 for 55%. That's a big difference and we are probably not having this conversation debating Simmons accuracy.
I don't even know where this conversation about accuracy came from as I seem to remember him making some beautiful passes last year, tough passes that were right on the money. I think we're all just getting too worked up about this. I seem to remember Strev singlehandedly giving a game to UND his junior year by repeatedly hitting the UND defensive backs on the out route for easy pick 6's. So sometimes great QB's have rough games and we shouldn't read too much into a single performance.

But I do think there is a legit question to be asked about all the dropped balls - what was going on there? Even our sr all-conf pick...

They were playing against an opponent where everything was happening faster than normal. Everything is condensed and moving faster, no time or space. It effects timing and just about everything including simply catching the ball. Take your eye of the pass just a little because you are peeking up field because you know a defender is closing on you, dropped pass.

If the ball is thrown 5ft over a receivers head and he touches the ball its not a dropped pass. If its thrown into the ground and they don't get their hands under it it's not a dropped pass. If they have to dive for it and don't bring it in its not a dropped pass. Also take away the last drive of the game when KS was playing prevent and 57 yards are lost and 5 to 6 completions also. Again my opinion.

IMHO there have been some comments about QB passing accuracy that are flawed. PA for a QB is over rated. What do some fans want for accuracy? Sixty, seventy %? In NFL history Brees is 1st in career % at 67%, Brady 64, some guys named Unitas and Namath (who many of you haven't heard of at 54 and 50) and all were winning QBs. Mental toughness, mobility in the pocket, leadership, etc can all be more important than pure accuracy. I thought Austin did fine under the circumstances--1st collegiate start, Big XII opponent, 50K fans, 93 degrees, etc. Sure he would have liked to have completed more passes but every player on both teams wanted to do better than they did. Prevent D at the end? Yes--but I don't care when there's 50 seconds left, you have the pressure of winning or losing the game on your shoulders, all out pass rush, etc. and you can lead a team 50-60 yds, go 5 of 6 passes to get them in position to win, you're beyond ok in my book! Coyotes had 1 sack in the game thanks to OL/RB blocking but also Austin's movement in the pocket. Silly to even talk about accuracy with his small body of work in college! A couple of guys named Joe and Bob who know a little about football think he is a D1 QB that can start and play! That's ok with me and I trust their judgement!!

I was trying to point out influences on Simmons' completion %, a good P5 defense and some drops, by receivers, also playing against the same defense.
I'm very optimistic that both will be better against FCS competition.
The play-by-play summary indicates drops if you'd like another opinion.

As for completion percentage it does count. The bottom line like it or not he did nothing in the 2nd half period. Bob and Glen do know a lot but what the hell doess that meen? Did they know he was going to have a 42 percent rate and they would be ok with that. Even Bob said he missed opportunities did he not? Say what every you want if he would of performed we win. No bs excuses 1st game stuff. I think Bob has mentioned it plenty of times how he is 3-0 and the only undefeated qb in the mvfc has he not? So how is this his first game.

You want this program to succeed then he needs to do what us expected of him. All the talk of heard on how great he is and he has a better arm then anyone I have not seen it at all this year or last. He can throw it 80 yards big deal. All the hype needs to become reality.

Almost always (if not actually always) the Simmon's "hype" is started by "Well, we know he isn't Streveler, but..." How is that making excuses or even creating hype? Everyone knows we just had an all-timer, and comparisons are going to happen. Just not sure where all of your anger is coming from here.

I don't know if you ever played, but if you did you'd know there's a big difference between being the outright starter chosen to lead the program and being called upon to fill in when the regular guy needs a break. Give the kid a chance to get his feet under him. I get that we had a chance to win and if he made a few more plays maybe we would have. If he made a few less maybe we lose by 14. Who knows. But you could say the same thing about every player on that team. We missed some field goals that would have won the game. Simmons got us into what should be reasonable field goal range. Just didn't quite work out. We could go around all day and try to put the blame on one player but the fact is the team lost. The whole team. Strev is gone. I miss him too. But get over it and give the kid a chance.
