Simmons wins this game...PERIOD!!! Our team IS BETTER THAN LAST YEARS...and you're going to see that year after year to come...simply, that's just how Neilson does it!!! Simmons wins the game? Not the team? Your in la la land!!! Really? You really think he meant one player wins a game? He’s a dad of one of the football team players. I’m going to go out on a limb here and post that he understands the game of football. Good grief.

That means Simmons wins the game PERIOD. I don't know what else to say. He could of said USD wins the game PERIOD but he didn't. So any reasonable person can understand what he said. And don't assume anything. That's what he meant.GOOD GRIEF.

I also believe that he meant a Simmons led team wins the game. Obviously it’s a team game, and teams win or lose together. To bicker over this is senseless in my opinion, we are all above that.
You predicted a 3-4 win season this year, and who knows, you might be right. But I don’t think so. I don’t think Simmons has to be better than Strev, he just needs to manage the game. Austin has a fantastic arm, even Chris would admit that. He doesn’t have Streveler’s break away speed, it hardly anyone does. If Austin performs at the level I think he will, then I do believe we are in for a good year. I think everyone will admit the fiasco we went through last year mid season with the D backs cost us a game or two. But even if it hadn’t happened, the injuries that mounted up including the game at Sam Houston, I’m not certain we could’ve even fielded a team for the next round. I’m not certain how our D backs will play either. We lost those 3 guys and that’s hard to replace.
I trust in Coach Nielson’s ability to have a team that competes on the field. Our passing game I think will be out of sight. If our O line can open holes and we have a better than average running game, then we are going to be a 40+ points a game team. Our defensive line is gonna be tougher than hell. If our linebackers hold their own, and our D backs develop and gain some confidence, we will be a playoff team and also a team that can beat anybody in this league.
To me, the biggest question mark isn’t any position challenges, but if we will have the leadership needed to go to that next level. Never underestimate the value of leadership. I’m not saying we don’t have it, I’m saying I don’t know if we do. Again, I can see a 6-2 Valley record if all the pieces come together. I think we will beat one if not both of the XDSu’s. I do think NDSU has more depth but the sting of last years loss will resonate with this team, and put a bullseye on their back. We sure as hell won’t fear them. SDSU might be good, but I personally think they will fall from last year. Youngstown I think will be in the hunt at the end. Gonna be a NUTS year in the MVFC.
I don’t see a win at K State, it in the event it did happen, I wouldn’t be shocked. The game at Weber might tell all. If we lose big, look out. If we win big, others better look out. If it goes down to the end, which I think it will, will tell me we are a good team.

Some averages I thought I might share:
OL 15 SD Avg. weight 299.1 lbs OL 18 KS Avg. weight 300.1 lbs
DL 17 SD Avg. weight 258.2 lbs. DL 20 KS Avg. weight 276.1 lbs.
LB 15 SD Avg. weight 218.6 lbs LB 11 KS Avg. weight 203.1 lbs
I think we match up pretty well size wise with them. Thought??

Nice work sportschic. Are your numbers from the updated weights posted on the roster or are they the old weights? Could perhaps match up on paper even closer if they are from last year and don't reflect gains in the weight room. Always a slippery slop playing that game, but that's what this time of year is for right? =)

Here’s a brief synopsis on Kansas State football:
1.) They return 14 starters and 35 letter winners from last years team that went 8-5 with a season ending victory in the Cactus Bowl 2.) They return their top two quarterbacks from last year. They each had a minimum of 4 starts each 3.) They return (2) All-Big 12 defensive lineman from last year 4.) They return 2 running backs with over 1000 yards career rushing 5.) They are 23-3 for season openers under Bill Snyder 6.) They are 67-9 in September under Bill Snyder 7.) Kansas State is 72-5 under Coach Snyder is home games against non-conference opponents 8.) For the first time under Snyder, they start the year with two new coordinators 9.) Under Snyder, they are 165-34 if they score first 10.) They are 179-11 if they lead at half 11.) They are the only team in the nation to be in top 10 for fewest turnovers the past 2 years 12.) Their entire starting offensive line returns from last year
As I read this, the thought that comes into my mind, is for any chance to pull off the upset, our lines on both sides of the ball need to hold their own with Kansas State, and that’s a tall task. However, if we can get through the first 20 minutes of the game, and not have that period of time where the sky falls, and we show some ability to move the ball, then the focus shifts to Kansas State in not “losing to an FCS team”. Realistically my guess is that we play hard, but find ourselves constantly playing uphill. If Simms performs at his ability, and our quick snapping offense poses problems for them, then there’s a chance we have a game.
The key to us being in this is our D line. Especially the interior part of it. To me, that will be the tall tale sign.
Either way, I see us playing their a$$es off and making a good show. Kansas State wins 31-17

The two deep roster posted in the game notes for K State. I count 4 freshman, including 2 OL, in the group. Interesting. Is it a credit to great recent recruiting, some injury issues or something else?

The two deep roster posted in the game notes for K State. I count 4 freshman, including 2 OL, in the group. Interesting. Is it a credit to great recent recruiting, some injury issues or something else? It looks like you're referring to just the true freshmen listed on the two-deep. Regarding the OL, there just aren't that many guys. There's 15 total OL listed on our roster and 8 are freshmen (4 redshirt, 4 true). Bianchi is the only non-freshman OL who isn't listed on the two-deep. Beyond that there's only two redshirt freshmen who aren't listed. I don't like to see kids that were in high school last year playing on the OL, but the true freshmen - on paper - are the biggest players on the line beside Scheidegger. I hope they can hold their own. The other two true freshmen you see are backups at corner. They did beat out redshirt freshmen to get those spots, but all 6 sophomores/junior/seniors we have listed as DBs (except Frederick) on the roster are already on the two-deep.

Picking through the depth chart and typing out my thoughts:
QB - Austin Simmons. He's got a cannon for an arm and we've already seen him guide his team to wins over Illinois State and SIU over the past couple years. I'm looking forward to seeing how he handles the job full time. RB - We're in good hands. Kai Henry put up nearly identical numbers to Fredrick last year. There's a lot of guys we can rotate in here. I like that we've kept hearing about Canaan Brooks. Coaches usually aren't this eager to bring up true freshmen. WR - Stacked. Case, Allen, Jackson, Ducker, Baker. Falck is back form injury. Crawford found his way onto the two-deep. For whatever reason WR has been our deepest position for years and the trend continues. TE - Samson showed great flashes last year as a freshman. Very athletic player. He'll make big plays this year. OL - I really like our starting 5. They're going to get dinged up at some point though, and it's unsettling to see so little experience in the reserves. I'm just now noticing we've lost 6 underclassmen from last year's roster. That seems like a lot.
To sum up the unit, we should be scoring a lot of points again this year. Depth at OL remains a question and will likely catch up to this team at some point. We can't count on any early blowouts this year to get the freshmen some low-pressure game reps either.
DE - Greenfield and Kline. We're good there through 2019. Great backups in Hopkins and Kramer. DT - This is an unproven group. Whitcomb missed his entire sophomore season and didn't play much his freshman season. Headlee saw time down the stretch as injuries accumulated but I don't recall him playing much even then. Wish I saw Schultz on there. Hopefully he'll be back terrorizing QBs next year. LB - We've got seniors Coker and Gray on the outside. I can tell I haven't thought much about the roster breakdown over the summer because I was not prepared to see Cochrane starting in the middle. DB - Cornerback is less of a question mark than I was anticipating. Armstead and Collins reprise their starting role from the 2nd half of last season. We had some encouraging games and some disastrous games defending the pass in that stretch. An offseason as starters should help that out. We're good at safety with Gray and Johnson returning.
For as many playmakers as we have I still wonder if we can stop the run? I'm afraid teams are going to pound the ball inside at will. Big question marks at DT and inside LB.
I'm sure that like last year there will be some young gems that step up and address a few of my concerns. This staff seems to have been doing an incredible job on the recruiting trail. Going through the roster position by position has finally got me realizing just how close I am to the road trip to Manhattan. Another season of Coyote football is upon us!!!

Good news about the O line is we essentially have 6 starters there and tanner Anderson can fill in at pretty much any spot as needed if we do have injuries. Also Austin Wallace and bianchi when healthy are very able. Curious to see how our interior D line does.

After reading YF's review of KSU, I'd say this game will be a great measuring stick for the OL and DL - which are thought to be very strong units. I would say on paper, if healthy, KSU and maybe NDSU are the only lines that I'd put ahead of USD**. If they can hold their own for a large chunk of the this game, it bodes VERY well for the rest of the season. That said - wow, KSU has horses, experience, and depth on both lines - that could really hold up well in the Big 12 if they can get a QB to step up.
My pick: KSU 42 Yotes 27
** - that may be the first time anyone has said something like that since the move to FCS. Recruiting for linemen takes time, but the Yotes are no longer smaller and slower than MVFC teams. Makes you wonder what Streveler could have done with 2 years behind a line like this?

Wait, is Schultz out for the year? I think Coach Nielsen said it was looking like he wouldn't play this year. I think he could be a beneficiary of the 4 game redshirt rule. Would be a nice pickup for the stretch run, and still have 3 years of eligibilty.
