I would strongly urge any fan of Coyote athletics, if they ever get the opportunity, to check out the USD pole vaulters in a meet sometime. It would definitely be worth your while. All of them are remarkable and they basically just crush the competition, but Nilson is just at a different level. Look at it this way: how often does the opportunity present itself to view a world and Olympic caliber athlete right here in South Dakota especially when he's one of our own. Even if you're unfamiliar with the pole vault, just watching him warm up a person realizes that they're watching something unique .

Chris's 19'1/4" vault in Lincoln is the best by an American this indoor season and 7th best in the world!! The sky's the limit (pun intended) for this young man!! Fantastic job Chris!!!

Super proud of Chris and our T&F coaching staff. I would hope breaking a 22 year old record after winning the title is enough to secure the Bowerman Award too. We shall see...

Simply amazing. He is also leading the NCAA by 3”. I just looked up the qualifying standards for the 2020 Tokyo olympics, and it looks like the qualifying period starts on July 1, 2019.
I guess this olympics is different than in the past because they are going by world rankings rather than a set standard qualifying height or time (other events). I have no idea how he ranks compared to post-graduate vaulters, but I bet he has a shot.

Two high jumpers, Zack Anderson and Jack Durst, went over 7'3 and 7'2 on Saturday. Not too bad! Durst is only a freshman. With so many high ceiling performers, both men and women, our track team is really fun to watch.
