TIme to look at the Yotes. Everyone agrees the loss of Streveler is big, but on offense, we also lose Dagel, Van Roekel, and Hale. Fortunately, we return a lot of depth on offense. Our O-line will be the strength of the offense. While we return many players with significant playing time, the competition for starting spots will be tough and I will not be surprised to see other young names rise to starting spots. The other strength of the O is our depth at WR. Look for Crawford and Falck to see increased roles along with the many returning players who shined last year. At TE look for Samson to rise as a goto for any of the QBs, and one of the young talent (Kneifl, Jensen, or Herrmann) at that position will surely rise. While we will miss all that Streveler could do for us, it is not like we will play the season without a QB. While Simmons has some solid experience and a very good arm, do not count out Parks and Tsagalis. This battle most likely will play out in the summer, but the Spring Game will be our first chance to see significant time for both of these challengers. The RB threesome of Fredrick, Henry, and Klett was very effective last year as each brings a different running style. With less emphasis placed on rushing yards from the QB position, these three will need to be a bigger part of the offense. Fredrick will still lead this group, but I anticipate more from the other two. Overall, this is a well-balanced offense that will be a nightmare to prepare for by opposing D coordinators. Anytime your O-line is strong, your offense is strong.
On the defensive side of the ball we lose very little, and most of who we lost, we lost during the season last year. This gave an opportunity for many young players to get valuable experience. I am interested in seeing how the 3-4 defense is compared to our traditional 4-3. I am confident the coaching staff is making this change based on personnel and it will only make us better. Like the offense, our strength is upfront in the D-line. We have tremendous depth and can easily go 3 deep at all positions which allows them to stay fresh. Inside Schultz, Headlee and DeBoer lead a very strong crew. On the edges, Greenfield is the leader, but Cline, Kramer, and Hopkins are all very good. Look for a few new names to rise here as well. At LB, Coker and Alex Gray return to lead the position. It will be interesting to see if Matthew can overcome injury and reach his potential in the middle. Out of the group of Cochrane, Kordus, Joanis, and Amusan, I would expect one or two to clearly take over a starting spot. Andrew Gray and Powell lead the defensive backfield. A lot of young talent got valuable experience last year, and I anticipate some good battles at CB with Armstead and Collins Jr. getting pushed by the likes of Reed and the three redshirt freshmen. A good defense is still necessary to win a championship, and although we are still young, we definitely have the talent and depth on D to help us win.
Not to forget special teams, but we have solid kickers and punters returning and our overall depth showed last year as many players found their playing time on special teams and I would think the same is true for this year. I would expect this third phase to be very good as well.
The last thing to mention is the outstanding job this coaching staff is doing. Yes, we lost a few good coaches, but that is to be expected when you have success. I am confident this staff will have this team ready for the season. We have a good schedule with our tougher games spread throughout the season. Coming out of the three non-conference games with a 2-1 record will be important and I predict that we end up a solid 8-3 with a return to the playoffs and maybe a longer run.
