The real giveaway was when he said he was doing his taxes, no one making that kind of money does their own taxes. It seems like he has a pretty great lawyer who could do them.

Even if he does do his own taxes, you can't get smashed while doing them. I had a couple beers while trying to do mine this year and had to put it off a day (and that's using the dumbed down TurboTax software). I don't understand why he would lie about doing his taxes.

Why should that surprise you after seeing how he had his team laying on the football field faking cramps on every 3rd down...? Can't beat us honestly, may as well game the system and get extra timeouts. Stig's a joke. Good thing is, he is punishing himself for the DUI.

I just don't get why he would claim he was doing his taxes. Is it supposed to make his alcohol consumption more forgivable? It's such an odd part of his story.

Another email I received in response to my email yesterday to the Brookings Register:
...I’d like to thank you for your awareness in this matter - we in the sports department had lost track of this matter since we have been gearing up for covering the Jackrabbits in the Big Dances after both of the SDSU teams had won Summit Championships over the Coyotes - so I wasn’t even aware of when the court appearance was, much less the outcome. Plus, one of our local teams - Sioux Valley - is in the boys’ Class A State Tournament, so we’ve been busy keeping our heads above water with local coverage.
Hopefully the Argus and the TV stations provided you similar information as what Jill gave you.
Again, thanks for your diligence.

I kind of viewed this as an "F" you email... Saying we're too busy to cover stories that may negatively impact bunny athletics and burying the story with fluff pieces about how great we are in Brookings. Responsible journalists don't lose track of important dates (like a court hearing of your head football coach) unless it was intentional.

Had to deal with a closet alcoholic a few years ago, and there are A LOT of pieces to this story that certainly point that direction. (It is pretty nasty, so for Stig and his family I hope it isn't the case.) In the context of someone being in that situation though, things like the taxes story, drinking Joose, the 'God will forgive me' narrative, etc., all fit together. Folks in that scenario can only get in that scenario by being good at manipulation, obviously, or it would they would be found out. Taxes = I'm just a normal guy, nothing to see here Joose = "I've never had a beer in my life", nothing to see here God forgives = I'm just a normal guy - only better, nothing to see here
Its hard to explain if you've never had to deal with it, but over time it really is important to have a public persona that is unquestioned so that, well, no one questions the red flags.

We have been far too busy waving our pom poms from press row to cover anything that might hurt sales of our newspaper. Let the Argus handle it.

The Coyote mention would only be applicable if they otherwise covered USD, as the P&D does with the occasional sdsu pieces. I sincerely doubt that the Brookings rag does.

There was a short article in the Yankton P&D online today that said our favorite hypocrite had plead no contest, his case was sealed and that it'll be wiped from the records if he successfully completes his probation whatever that entails.

One of the state's highest paid employees and it all just quietly gets swept away. This case still simply amazes me. Imagine if this were Fleck, Ferentz, Campbell, or Frost, all of whom are amongst the highest paid employees in their respective states, do you think any of their jobs survive a DUI? Much less the details get entirely swept away and the story buried? No way. I can't think of any head coach on the state university level who has survived something similar.
Gross incompetence by the state's media. Too busy being cheerleaders.

Everyone involved, whether it's the university, athletic department, SD media, fans, or sponsors, should be embarrassed by this fiasco. Your school's highest profile employee got loaded on Joose and ran his car into a ditch, had it completely covered up ahead of national signing day, and then the guy gets off seemingly without any reprimand whatsoever.
At least they get to keep the drunk who is incapable of coaching a team to its potential.

Gross incompetence by the state's media. Too busy being cheerleaders. If it happened to an NDSU coach it would be a huge deal, heck Bohl's speeding tickets were turned into a big thing. A DUI would be at least a week long feeding frenzy, no way they just completely forget about the court date either. That hackery from the Brookings paper is beyond anything I've seen.

If the P&D had the same blurb as the Argus then it had a few slight inaccuracies. It suggested that there was a probationary period but since his record is already sealed we know he got nothing more than a fine. Even with a suspended imp it wouldn't nget sealed until he is off his probationary period. Since his is sealed now that means he got no probation. The Argus blurb also said his BAC is unknown since he was unable to give a PBT. Well there was a blood test and that result is known, maybe not by the media, but it was known by the parties involved.
