On a more serious note...
I don't know how realistic it is to hope whoever is involved in making the final hiring decision seeks input from Abbott. Further, I would hope Abbott will be able to spend time with each of the candidates and share his ongoing vision for the future of USD.
Governor Janklow played a large role in the selection of Abbott and it wasn't without controversy. As most of you know, Abbott was the first non-academic (at least to my knowledge) placed in charge of a flagship university in SD. A number of USD academics were unhappy. I think this played a role in Abbott focusing his early attention on rebuilding (literally and figuratively) the various schools comprising the university. It was only after that he started recognizing the importance of putting together quality athletic programs. I remember him stating, with some chagrin, that you could have the best B School, Med School, and Law School, etc., but the headlines were going to be owned by the team that won. To his credit, his view of athletics evolved to an extent I would have never dreamed.
Finally, I have concern that the new president may not share Abbott's understanding of what makes news.

I have a good feeling that we will be OK in this regard. There were several folks on the selection committee that understand the importance of athletics and its role in promoting the image of the University.

I would support whoever got the job, but I'm indifferent. No one could ever step in and make me not miss Abbott, though I do like that we've got someone who worked with him for several years. I never worked with her in my time at USD but never heard anything glowing from those who did. I'm sure I would have felt the same way about Abbott when he ascended to the job. I'll reserve full judgement for when we've seen her on the job.
Seeing that I hold the same degree as the new president is empowering though. I'll be sure to put my name in for candidacy like 25 years from now.

The interesting thing to me is the lack of a doctorate. I thought it was a given in the world of academia that the president of a university was required to have a doctorate. Of course as times change that line of thinking changes as well. I believe the University of Iowa's President Harreld also does not have a doctorate, instead having an MBA from Harvard. I think we are seeing a change in thinking and that, let's face it, these schools are not only places of learning but are now also big businesses and it takes a CEO type to run a business, not just an academic.
I really don't care what letters she has behind her name, as long as she gets the job done and continues to build on the foundation that Pres. Abbott put in place. She said that is what she is going to do so I am all good with that.

Correct me if I'm wrong but President Abbott does not have a doctorate...? Juris Doctor, so no. Not really. I never would have been on board with Abbott's hire but he is going down in history here for what he has done as president.

A JD is a professional doctorate.

20 doctorates doesn’t equate to leadership. You have to have vision, lead gracefully, and raise money. You do those three well and let your peeps do the rest, you’ll be a good president. I think Sheila will be excellent
