I like it. Gives you a chance to see if true freshmen are actually ready or not to see the field, helps with depth late in the season, the potential for playtime keeps them focused during the redshirt year.
Someone is going to say it's going to result in bigger schools poaching our guys who looked good in those few games. If the coaches are concerned about that then they will just keep the shirt on. That, or the player proves himself worthy on the field and burns the shirt.
I remember a game against sdsu a few years back where we started the game with Josh Vander Maten lined up at running back while Bouma and Roberts were very banged up. Leading up to the game someone asked Joe about burning the shirt for Khorey Kilgore because we had absolutely nothing left at RB, but to sacrifice a whole season of a player's career for one game made little sense. This new rule would have helped greatly in that situation, and probably in our situation last fall when we lost our secondary.

It has its pitfalls, but probably for the best. Jackson Coker and Jack Cochrane could still have 4 years of eligibility left after other guys got healthy if we had this rule last season.

As with most things, this will cut both ways, but I see more positives than negatives. Lots of true freshmen in FB think they are ready for immediate playing time. Most are wrong, but some are right. This gives them an opportunity to prove it on the field. Then they will either enhance their own opportunities immediately, or feel better about waiting and developing. If they decide to transfer afterwards, at least it will be a more informed decision.
More freedom and flexibility for players and coaches is a good thing, I think. It's a game - let them play it.
