There is quite the debate going on on the Cramprabbit board about tailgating. SDSUALUM08 takes the stance that they need to relax the rules in Brookings so people can enjoy the tailgating scene. He’s 100% correct. The last time we tailgated there it had to be similar to Nazi Germany under Hitler. It’s about as much fun to tailgate there as it is getting a colonoscopy.
That is something we are getting down pat. It’s important to create a game day experience and we’ve done just that. Really pumped to get the grills fired up for Northern Colorado. Let’s have a great game day experience.

Just curious, but does anyone know what the deal is with the privately owned lot south of the tennis courts? My assumption is that they have refused to sell either because they are holding out for a bigger payout, or are just stubborn?
To me that would open up the parking and tailgating quite a bit.

Your assumptions are correct. Overpriced and stubborn.

Owner wants a ridiculous amount of money for it and isn't budging from what I hear.

I think I saw it listed at like $2 million at one point. Just a ridiculous amount of money for the property. I'm sure the university is willing to pay way above market value, but not like 10 times market value.

Time for the city of Vermillion to implement eminent domain, build a parking lot and rent it to the University.

Went over to the Bunny Board and read the thread on there about tailgating at SDSU. First, I don't plan on ever attending a game there, I just don't think it would be fun. I'm not interested in dealing with the hassle. It sounds like a very unwelcome environment. Seems their UPD is all over the place just sucking the life out of the place, and I'm not talking about out of control fun. There were several posts from guys who report to be in their 30's with families just standing around having a few beers and UPD came up on them. Apparently they require wristbands everywhere, not just at the student tailgate? Yeah, that wouldn't fly with me. I'm way too old to play that game of having to where a brand that tells me I'm legal, eff that. I don't want to ever experience that type of atmosphere at USD.
If USD tailgating ever gets the way it is up at State I would be done with going to games. I think we have the right mix here. Students have their own section where they can do their thing. We have permanent tailgate sections & drive-up sections. We can go out at halftime without being harassed. I know there are people that stay out and tailgate and listen to the game on the radio rather than go in. Thing is, it's not hard core partiers doing that, it's usually 30-40 something year old ladies who are just interested in the social aspect and catching up with friends who sit and tailgate while their husbands go into the game. If you're not causing any disruptions then what is the problem? Tailgating should never be "closed".
I know the construction around the Dome has tailgating kind of spread out to several different lots but that isn't always a bad thing either as it allows people to find a place that suits them. I just don't want to get to a point where University Police make it a Gestapo like atmosphere. I've personally never had any issues, University Police have always been polite and won't bother you unless you are out of control and doing something that could cause harm to others (and I don't think I've ever seen anything like that happen). Contain and respond rather than initiating contact is the best course of action for crowd control IMO.

FWIW you have to take the complaints about tailgating on the bunny board with a grain of salt, IMHO it becomes an echo chamber, one person bitches and others fall in line. I was there Saturday, yes UPD patrols the area but it's no big deal. Throughout my life I've been to numerous all ages outdoor festivals where alcohol is permitted and wrist bands were required for all of them. It's no big deal simply walk a few feet to a booth where some nice friendly people will check your ID and put one on for you. If your too lazy to do that than I don't know what to tell you, wristbands are no big deal and are probably the easiest way to control under age drinking. As far as no tailgating during the game, well I always hate it when that silly football game gets in the way of a good afternoon drunk(sarcasm). The same people bitching about no tailgating during the game would be the same ones bitching about empty seats or an empty student section while a significant number of people are tailgating, the football game needs to take center stage not the tailgating, if those rules are too draconian for some people well I don't know what to tell them.

It is universally known that gameday and tailgating at USD is way better than SDSU. We'll keep doing things our way and you do whatever you do up there in Brookings. There are obviously issues because I have been hearing about it for years. Even other schools fan bases have taken notice.

I won't argue with you that tailgating in Vermillion and in other college towns is better, we have areas we need to improve on, it's the annual bitch fest that I don't get. The rules aren't that tough, wristband, no glass bottles, coozey over your can, and keep the hard liquor out of sight, do that and upd will leave you alone. The ironic thing is IIRC you need a wristband to drink at the Summit League Tournament nobody bitches about that. Having grown up and lived in the SE corner of the state all my life I've learned certain areas of the state the residents are a little more uptight than other areas maybe that's the problem.

When I go up to the game at the plastic pasture this year for the first time, I will put up with the wristband thing. Just makes me feel I look young yet! I hope I can choose the color a as a couple of colors tend to give me a rash.

What the... seriously? Why? I've often wondered why myself, the coozey and keep the hard liquor bottles covered rules baffle me, I'm assuming it's an image thing, maybe they don't want all sorts of bottles and cans in the pics on social media. But the point is why complain about it, the rules aren't that harsh, I'm not letting the tailgating rules get in the way of a good time, than again I'm old so maybe I don't know what a good time is anymore.

Do they make coozies big enough for a can of Joose? Asking for a friend.
