Srsly. Who did this score actually shock Me. Weber State did not allow USD to play their average game. The Yotes were foiled. It was a physical game. Weber played better than their average would suggest and established a strong momentum going into the conference season. USD took a big step back. Its a set back but it is also a great benchmark for the team. This was a step back for the Yotes after the first two games. They look weaker going into the conference schedule.

Simmons got little protection and time to execute. He was on the run or taking hits all night. The O line will have to get together better or there will be trouble. Simmons will be hurt and we may just be converting LBs back to QBs.
All-and-all it was a disappointing night. After the first two games I think it may have been the letdown. The team has to learn what it can, put it behind them and move on to next game.
The bye week will help, then on to SIU, a team that is averaging over 40 pts/game. They scored 44 this week only to lose by 4 to SEMO.

I'm confident that the coaches will use the bye week to good advantage! Really need to study the OL lack of play since teams will use this film to try to duplicate what WS did. Need to run the ball much better and with more consistency so teams can't unload on our QB when having to pass 40-55 times. As others have said screens, draws, better blitz pickups, etc. Be SMART. Over 100 yds in penalties is unacceptable!!
The broadcast quality/commentary was below par but one thing they said over and over was how many UT players were on WS (44%). BYU knocks off #6 WI and they have 42% UT players. Never thought of UT as a recruiting possibility but maybe could pick up 2 or 3 gems a year...

Which QB would you like to see at the helm? You obviously have a younger guy in mind, so let's hear who should be QB1. I've pretty much got your agenda narrowed down to 2 options. Option 1: your kid got beat out or is buried in the depth chart. We've seen that on this board a few times over the years. Option 2: you just plain don't understand the game. Simmons was the national player of the week last week. Here's my two cents... He sent me a pretty aggressive private message calling me an idiot for suggesting that he has a kid on the team.... then he admits that he does have a kid on the team and he plays defense and is "playing his ass off" only to lose because of the "underperforming qb". So I did some digging and found that he registered in July 2016 and he has been dumping on Simmons since his very first post. So why would a defensive player's dad be ragging on the same QB for 2 years? I won't name names, but we have a defensive player who was moved from QB to linebacker around the time he registered and started posting. Seems to me that he is that kid's father and he is STILL upset that his kid was moved instead of Simmons. I could be wrong, but it sure seems like more than just a coincidence. I’m sure #5, a senior, wants his dad posting this crap on his team’s message board.

Totally agree. Could count on one hand the number of times Simmons had more than 2-3 seconds to get a pass off without running for his life If you watched our senior right offensive tackle, he got beat on every single play of the game. #73 had a horrible night. It got so bad that I was watching #73 on almost every play - it was like I couldn't take my eyes off a car wreck. Our center had an equally bad 1st half, but had a better 2nd half. And I say that as someone who blissfully rarely notices OL play - when I notice it has to be REALLY bad.

Erbes eventually replaced Schneider at RG. They need to seriously think about shuffling some guys around and maybe replacing some others. Maybe Jennings needs to move back to RG and Wallace or someone needs a try at RT.

Lol we have Inspector Clouseau on our board. National player of the week thanks to the receivers nothing he did. When you have 3 tds off of 5 yard screens you look great. Keep digging inspector he is 1-2 no playoffs this year because he sticks to his 1st read and can't adjust if its not open. He runs out of the pocket because he is scared and clueless watch the game genius.

No need to be rude yotebewithyou, but this is a team game and Simmons really didn't get the opportunities to execute as often as he should. He was sacked 8 times! For every 5 passes he threw he got sacked. He completed a little over half of those 5 and he was hurried and under pressure most of time.
On the other hand, looking at the defense, they were only able to sack WSUs QB twice.
In my opinion if you want to complain about the play of Simmons you have to address this issue first.
Secondly mocking some one else's intelligence means a person feels their's is greater. That has yet to be proven so it's a little arrogant isn't it?

The OL did not play to their capability this game. The concerning part is that now their weekness is exposed...picking up the blitz. I’m confident our coaches are aware that this is a priority to fix and Simmons never had any time to get in a rythym and he was running for his life pretty much for 4 quarters. He had some mistakes but all in all I think he played decently with the lack of protection. Furthermore there has not been any running game yet...which none of us were expecting. If you dont have a balanced attack... you have no attack! There is not one football team at any level that can be successful being one dimensional. For this game it is unfair to even suggest Simmons is at fault. The team looked flat with no energy or swagger. I think our defense held up under the circumstances. Point blank Weber came out with energy and swagger and we didn’t!

I got to bed at 5am from the trip out west, so was a long night ( in many ways..lol ). Observations and comments are as follows:
Was the wind a factor? Yes, in the first half. Very strong winds. Very reminiscent of the Illinois State game last year. Calmed down at half some so not near the impact the 2nd half.
The offense simply was not good. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Comments from others that watched the game on TV are fair and appropriate
Did Simmons play bad? How would you know. He ran for his life every stinking play. It’s absolutely normal for a QB to be jittery even where there was protection
Rating defensive play: In my opinion a solid B+. 8 of the 27 came from the fumble recovery and either 6 or 9 came from field position Weber State got from when we went for a first down when normally we would’ve punted.
Penalties: This nonsense has to stop...and now. The one in the first quarter where our RB threw the ball at the Weber player was a little understandable. They hit him and drove him back several yards then slammed him down. No whistle even though forward motion was stopped for seconds. This one is on the refs. Horrible call, one on which they were covering their ass to defer criticism from them.
Fire ( enthusiasm ): NONE. Enough said. I will never understand when you only get to play 11 games a year how you can be so darned non-chalant in your approach to the game. I will never understand that. Being pumped and having adrenaline can overcome a lot of shortcomings. This one is on the senior leadership.
Weber State experience: I go to almost every game and this fan base was the most respectful I’ve been around by far. NDSU fans should take a lesson from them. Nice people ( maybe the influence of Mormon religion...IDK ). Their crowd was probably around 10,000 but their student body attendance was great and stayed for the whole game. Imagine that. Nice people.
Overall analysis: Time will tell if our woes can be cured. I still think we have the capability to go as good as 6-2 in the Valley, but after 3 games, there is one thing very clear. There WILL NOT be an easy W for us period. To get 6 wins means a huge change in how we approach a game mentally. I know I’m a homer, that’s been pointed out several times, but I do think we can defend the Dome if we play our game. If we do that, we then must get 2 W’s on the road. That’s possible given our schedule. We are like the fighter that has been squarely punched in the mouth and we are bleeding. Are we going to rope a dope and fall, or are we going to take this game personally and come out fighting? You can break down our team anyway you want, and yes we have some shortcomings, but we also have some huge advantages as well. Right now it comes down to leadership. That has to come from within.
Sara Hill: We had the good fortune to meet Sara on our trip out there. She is the coaches wife that the fans of USD raised funds for 2 years ago. Sara and Jay Hill are extremely classy people. For the first time in 2 years Sara said she’s now waking up in the morning and feeling good. After he first round of treatments the cancer reappeared. She had to go through it all again. As of right now there’s no sign of cancer in her body. Extremely nice people, easy to cheer for. I’m supposed to relate to everyone that the funds that were given to them are being used at fund raisers and special events involving raising money for Hodgkin Lymphoba surviers or those in need of assistance. None of the funds are used personally, so what a great things that keeps giving to itself.
Huge game coming up in Carbondale in 2 weeks. Coach Nielsen is one of the best in the business and I have full faith and confidence in our ability to rebound.

Some Weber St observations and thoughts:
First of all - congratulations to Weber. They are a physical team that appeared on attack mode yesterday from start to finish. They were the aggressor and USD appeared to be finessing and trying to react out there versus taking it to them. That really felt like a MVFC team out there USD was playing. If Weber had more explosive offensive play makers they would be a contender for the FCS title IMO. I do think their lack of offensive production will hurt them eventually when they face another physical team that can pass protect and run block. With the dominant performance that Weber displayed against USD it was still a 17 point game that included one defensive score and several short fields.
USD's defense: The USD defense controlled Weber at times. USD held Weber to 1/13 on 3rd down conversions as well as 1/2 on 4th downs. Unfortunately penalties extended some of Weber's drives. Can't have those. Thank goodness that Weber didn't have UNC's QB/WR tandem yesterday to go with that physical unit. USD finished with two sacks. I am concerned with USD's lack of QB pressure. 2 sacks and very few QB hurries generated is not good enough IMO. We really missed Collins out there at corner. The three corners that played yesterday need to find a way to continue to improve quickly. Offenses are going to attack our corners with the pass and also attack the perimeter on run plays and screens and make our corners prove they can stop them. Headlee showed up big in the stat line yesterday with 6 tackles from his DT position. That is a good showing. Cochrane at MLB led the team with 9, and the Gray brothers had 8 each. If you had told me going into the game that Weber would score in the high 20's, I would have pegged this as a win. Sure was wrong there.
USD's offense: No offense is going to work when the OL gets man-handled like they did. We could have David Johnson back there and he would hardly get any yards rushing. The pass rush was in Simmons face all night. Tough to evaluate a QB when he knows every play there are several defenders in the backfield and a LBer coming on a free release. Simmons missed some open receivers, but the pass rush made that a very tough task. Would like to see him have a little more recognition of where the rush is coming from pre-snap. I would expect there will be some shuffling on the OL. Some of the players appear to be playing out of position. Asking a player that doesn't have the skill-set to play OT and not giving them blocking support from a TE or RB on the edge is a poor strategy. My hope is that Wallace (RS Freshman OL that has immense talent) is developing enough to allow the coaches to have confidence to put him at RT. He at least has the athletic ability to move laterally and pass protect on the edge. Jennings feels like a more natural guard to me and I think could have success there. RG has been a weakness point in the line as well and perhaps moving Jennings there could shore that up a little. Erbes was mixed into RG on several possessions and looked ok out there. Perhaps he is the answer there. Putting a true freshman at OL in a physical conference like the MVFC is definitely not what any of us would draw up. This unit will not face a front as stout as Weber until they see NDSU. Regardless though, the OL is going to have to prove they can pick up the blitz and stop the edge rush. Opposing defenses breaking down the film are going to see the blueprint to slow and stop the USD offense. The OL is getting zero push up front on run plays. Looks to me like they are catching versus driving through blocks on contact. Losing Coach O'Boyle's tough coaching is showing up. One of the OL players needs to step up and be a leader - take ownership of the unit and get mean. Hit somebody and don't let your QB get destroyed like that. Sometimes underclassmen need to be that leader. From experience, I hope they young guys don't think they can't step forward and take control of the team and lead. It needs to happen starting today. Too many dropped passes by the receivers. Most of the drops were preventable. Samson had a drop early in the game but took a huge hit from the Weber St safety separating him from the ball. The rest were just drops. Unacceptable for a group as talented as they are. With as much depth as the team has, I hope the guys that are dropping passes get much fewer reps. Unless the OL can block, I would like to see more Ben Klett. He can at least be his own blocker out there. He also has the ability to help block on the edge more effectively IMO.
Special Teams: Punting was good - long, high, deep punts for the most part. Coverage was decent with the exception of the 55 yard return - giving up big returns is becoming a pattern. Made a FG but hit the upright on an xtra point - I am beyond concerned with our ability to put the ball through the uprights. Did not cost us last night because the game was such a drubbing. It will cost us a game or games down the road unless improved.
Penalties: This team looks undisciplined to me. The personal fouls, late hits, mental errors, jawing at opposing players has to be reined in. Not only is it a bad look for the program, it is costing the team significantly. I want the team to have an edge and play with chips on their shoulders, but that does not mean playing undisciplined. As lop-sided as this match up was physically, if the team had at least played disciplined the game would have been even closer. This is controllable.
Leadership: I am not in the locker room obviously and this is just a complete guess from watching the team in person and paying close attention to the sidelines. This team is in desperate need of a player or players to step forward as a vocal and tough leader. They need someone to grab some face masks, smack some shoulder pads, get in faces, and demand effort, intensity, focus, and accountability. The talent is there. What I witnessed at home against UNC last week and Weber St yesterday - the players looked like zombies on the sideline. Get fired up! Go attack the opponent with a purpose and determination. There are 25 juniors and seniors on the team. Underclassmen, this is your team too - step up and be a leader. Leadership does not just come with age and time in the program. Step up now or you will regret it.
It is easy to feel like the season is lost after a game like this. The reality is young teams often play with a big variance from week to week. We are seeing that. Just like in life, the Yotes need to control what they can control in FB. Effort, focus, energy, discipline, preparation etc are all controllable. Do those things and they will look much better, even if over-matched up front like our OL was yesterday. As the saying goes - you are never as good as you think you are after a big win, and never as bad as you think you are after a big loss. (Well maybe Arkansas Pine Bluff is as bad as we think they are....) I believe the Yotes will make some improvements, but the road got tougher. The team needs to take care of business against SIU. Both teams NEED the win. It will be a playoff-like battle for survival. I think USD needs to go 6-2 in the MVFC to make the playoffs. If USD loses to SIU, well, I don't even want to discuss that.

My take on the offense is that the O-coordinator needs to take some pressure off the O-line by calling more running plays. Simply put, we don't run the ball enough. It makes us one dimensional and allows the defense to pin their ears back, pass rush, and dial up blitzes. We're just in love with the pass and throwing the ball too dang much. You could argue that the run game isn't working, I would counter by saying you need to give it time to work. Rushes that go for 1 or 2 yard gains in the first quarter become 5-6 yard gains in the 4th when you keep going to body with a pounding run game. It also keeps the defense honest, they still need to respect the run because you're calling run plays. The O needs more balance, simple as that. Running the ball will help the O-line out a ton.
You know who else this helps out, the defense. Running the ball increases our TOP and keeps the D off the field and prevents them from getting worn out. I was screaming at the TV Saturday night that we needed to RUN THE DAMN BALL!
