This does not surprise me at all. In fact, I think that I predicted it in a previous thread. I'm sure I did. Don't bother looking for it. It's there.
I'm so smart.

SDSU @ Marquette
Massey gives a typical score of Marquette winning 79-71.
Marquette is leading at halftime 44-25! ouch.
The Jacks are having trouble defending the perimeter. Marquette is 10-19 from the arc 53%. They are also losing the turnover margin 11-6 and the rebound margin 12-16. Marquette has 5 steals to the Jacks 1. All of those stats are uncharacteristic for an AJ team.
Larson and Selland have led in scoring, with Guebert and Miller getting shut down. Selland looks good at both ends, but they will need more than that to win the Summit. I didn't expect them to win this game, but it looks like they have a number of question marks that didn't exist last year.

Doesn't help the argument to make the Summit a 2-bid league

goyotes is exactly right. As much as I hate the Jacks, I do want them to do well in non conference action. Losing to Marquette by 40 and then rolling a bunch of Summit teams does not help our argument at all for a 2 bid league. If this was SDSU losing a conference game by 40 I would be very excited, but I want to see all the Summit teams do well in non conference. For the men it probably won't matter very much, we are going to be a one bid league regardless. However, the better our conference looks the better seed our champion will get.

Should be noted that Marquette is a top 25 team

Should be noted that Marquette is a top 25 team Touche, as the French say... Also, Grand Valley State is a top-5 DII team. They were 26-7 last year, with 4 of those losses coming from #1 ranked Ashland University. Also was the place Coach P won national COY and a DII national title. So they are a very good DII. The thing I really liked about that game is that Marquette seemed to play a lot like the Yotes: undersized, fast, aggressive turnover-forcing D. Hard to penetrate the lane on them because they quickly collapse on the ball-carrier, great ball movement to get perimeter shooters open, etc. I'm sure the Jacks will get it figured out, but if they don't, WIU and the Yotes both play that style of ball and could capitalize.

Speaking of WIU, they will host our common opponent, the SEC's Missouri, tonight at 8 PM. It's on ESPN+. Might be fun to catch that game, since we will play both teams.

The only time I'd root for the bunnies is when it helps us out, and this was one of those times. I agree with usdcoyote that in order to become a two bid league these sort of OOC games need to be won some of the time by our conference members, or at least a good showing be made. I don't have a clue if losing by 1 or 100 affects RPI for any particular game, and, as I've been told and have mentioned here before, the NCAA committee looks for reasons to put P5 teams in and, conversely, looks for reasons to keep mid majors out. Things like this, a top dog getting boat raced, can be a reason.

Margin of victory doesn't affect RPI. It CAN affect the perception for the committee voters, but only marginally. They tend to look at "good wins" and "bad losses" just in terms of the quality of the opponent rather than margin of victory. Also, you get more credit for road wins. Since they weren't favored anyway, I don't think it hurts them much. Just a missed opportunity for a road upset game. I'd say this is more just a bad omen for their prospects in other games. Hopefully the Jacks will get it figured out, and this can be racked up to first-game issues and adjustments. On the men's side the committee has finally abandoned the RPI in favor of a new superior metric, called the "NET" or NCAA Evaluation Tool. That one DOES look at margin of victory, but is capped at 10 points. More on that later, but the end result SHOULD be less marginalization of mid-majors for the men. For now we are stuck with the crappy RPI on the women's side.

WBB Summit scores from yesterday:
#19 Marquette beats SDSU -------91-52 #16 Missouri beats WIU -----------89-64 ORU beats Harris-Stowe(NAIA) ---74-46 PFW beats Indiana-Kokomo(NAIA) 87-50 NDSU beats Mayville State(NAIA) -49-43
Nothing too earth shattering here. WIU was marginally more competitive than SDSU in their blowout loss to a ranked team.
NDSU didn't impress in their close win to an NAIA school. None of those NAIA games count for RPI.

Western Illinois sure isn't backing down with their OOC schedule.

Western Illinois sure isn't backing down with their OOC schedule. Yeah, I’d rate their schedule third or fourth overall in the Summit, alongside Denver. WIU has three big matchups, and a decent number of more winnable games. Denver has almost no layup games, with a lot of tough mid-majors. Both of them will help the League RPI. ORU has something like 4 power 5 schools, but the rest of their schedule is garbage.
