Question for any of you Basketball refs, wonks, and fans:
When is it a flop (considered unsportsmanlike, or even cheating) When is it "selling contact" (considered smart play)
I would contend that there is usually a fine line, and fans tend to get too worked up over it. The exact same play will be seen as a flop by opposing fans and a smart play by home fans. Many fans, myself included, are often unaware of their own inherent bias on this point. This, I think, is one of the reasons refereeing basketball is one of the most difficult officiating jobs in sports. That and the speed of the game.
Obviously if there is no contact it would absolutely be a flop. No question. I think that sometimes when this happens it is unsportsmanlike, but sometimes the player is just conditioned to sell contact, and might be anticipating contact that doesn't happen. Either way, it's a flop.
The severity of contact vs the "correct" level of selling contact is such a fine line, that I don't think we should be getting in such a tizzy over it. Just because we got to see it in slow-motion on instant replay doesn't mean we are experts, but I guess that is part of the fun, and the experience of being an armchair coach.
Another point I'd like to make, is that players that don't ever try to sell contact are putting themselves at a severe disadvantage. Similar to many sports. I was always impressed with how good Emily Clemens was at selling contact. Some might say she was flopping, but she was darn good at it, whatever you want to call it.
Discuss.

Every season some aspect of calling the game is put under the microscope and it is my understanding that this is a point of emphasis in basketball officiating this season. Any officials out there that can confirm this? Result seems to be that officials are letting the offensive players get away with less displacement than before. Some teams/players are taking advantage of this, coaches might then be teaching it and from a fan's perspective this can be seen as smart or cheap. The block/charge is probably the toughest call to make in any sport and no matter how it's whistled one side is going to complain and the other applaud.

I'm a fan, if it means more charging calls on Daum. Anecdotally, it does seem like I have seen more charging calls in general in the Summit. Monica Arens has done really well setting her feet and taking the hits this year. After a couple of games she has looked like a boxer. *edit* Monica has become our "Scott Sterling" of taking charges...

Monica Arens has done really well setting her feet and taking the hits this year. After a couple of games she has looked like a boxer. *edit* Monica has become our "Scott Sterling" of taking charges... Just from anecdotal evidence it seems that Daum has been called a lot more this season than in the past for offensive fouls, but then he was always the textbook example of displacing the defender before going up for the shot, something he had down to an art form. If officials are watching for and calling that more it explains why he's been in more foul trouble this season than in season's past. A smart coach being aware of this can certainly coach their players to react to this.

My opinion is to be a man, never show weakness. To sell a foul is akin to ratting on someone. Who does that? Do you think the mob ratted each other out when they had differences? No! They handled their matters like men by taking things into their own hands. Someone bumps into you while defending underneath? Blow up their car. Contact while going for a layup? Behead their animals. Accusing you of being the last one who touched the ball? Ambush their family with a firing squad!
More concisely: I have no real opinion. Also, I should re-watch that movie.

Early this year while watching a game I thought I heard calling more offensive fouls was a point of emphasis for ncaa officials this year, so I did a quick search and found a youtube link from the ncaa explaining things the refs are supposed to watch this year, episode ten deals with offensive fouls, my personal favorite was the episode on the hook and hold, I guess I must like a little dirty play. www.youtube.com/channel/UChy2SdUn8Jl3H2NQ3801kMQ
