I just went to ESPN's website and staring at me is a photo of Matt Mooney going up for a shot, as his #8 Red Raiders whomped Texas 70-51. I'm left to wonder what could have been. Honestly, if he had stayed my beloved Yotes still wouldn't be at the level they had been at the past two years. I'm thankful for what Mooney brought to USD and am happy to see him succeed under Chris Beard at Texas Tech.
Beard has made a name for himself in no time flat. 3 years ago he made his D1 coaching debut at UALR and already made the Elite 8 last year with TTU. It would be no surprise whatsoever if this squad, with Mooney starting, is in the Final Four in Minneapolis. Surely a sore subject around here, but still I do take some enjoyment out of seeing former Summit League talent thriving on a larger stage.
On that topic, Tre'Shawn Thurman from UNO is thriving as a grad transfer at #17 Nevada under Eric Musselman. 26-3 on the year. The team has spent most of the year in the top 10, but this past Saturday they suffered a bit of an upset to Utah State.
Craig Smith has Utah State absolutely rolling. Picked ninth in the Mountain West preseason poll, they currently sit first after taking down Nevada, and are in great position for an at-large bid to the tourney. Very little was expected of them and they have gone toe-to-toe with a team expected to improve upon their Sweet 16 appearance last year.
Let me know if I'm missing anything. It might hurt to see, but you'll always be better off for having brought in talent that will rise above your level.
