For those who were ready to throw Dante to the curb for Tyler Wilhelm, Wilhelm was so good as a quarterback that they moved him to tight end. Josh Vander Maten is now the back-up. Good call on the person who was called for Wilhelm to be the starter....

Haha good one #1. I saw that as well. I think we all know the main one who was calling for that one all year!

I am looking forward to the Spring Game but am kinda miffed it is going to be held on a Thursday night. I am sure that will have an affect on attendance. I understand the reasoning behind the scheduling conflicts and that it is out of the football people's control. So what's the roll call? Who else is attending?
In the future I would like to see the game held on Saturdays. Open up the tailgate areas prior to the game. Maybe make it into an event by holding a barbeque competition with local vendors and the works. Basically a spring version of the SD State BBQ Championships Vermillion holds in the fall. Carnival like atmosphere with a stage and local bands playing after the game. After the long winters (I realize it is snowing as a type) it would be nice to have a spring celebration.
I really need to look into a career as an events coordinator because I think I know how to have too much fun.

www.usdcoyotes.com/sports/football/release.asp?release_id=6382 Vermillion, S.D. -- The South Dakota football team puts a wrap on its 2011 spring season on Thursday night with the annual Red-White Spring Game at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 21 at the DakotaDome. Admission is free to the game and Coyote fans are invited to watch the team in action. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for a BBQ Tailgate feed on the Coyoe Landing open to everybody, adults $7 and youth (12 and under) $3. South Dakota has 14 practices scheduled for the spring – No. 13 was completed on Tuesday – in addition to the Spring Game. With 18 of 22 starters returning, a veteran nucleus has provided the foundation for the Coyotes. At the same time, with several players not participating this spring because of injury, competition has been intense for spots on the depth chart. “We’ve created depth through some great competition in spring drills,” South Dakota head coach Ed Meierkort said. South Dakota has held practices in Sioux City, Iowa, and Sioux Falls, S.D., giving fans in those areas a chance to check out the team first hand. The Coyotes have placed much of their attention this spring on finishing games in the second half, which means continuing to focus on the running game – and mental conditioning overall. Not only are the Coyotes seasoned on both offense and defense with a majority of the starters back on both sides, but they are also return a strong special teams unit, led by punter Cole Zwiefelhofer (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) and kicker Kevin Robb (Rapid City, S.D.). Explosive kick returner Jeremy Blount (Tampa, Fla.) also is back. So not only is the spring game a chance for the veterans to shine – it’s also a chance for the younger players to showcase their development. “It’s a good chance to see young guys step up in roles,” Meierkort said. “Fans will notice some scheme changes offensively and defensively. Our kids are excited about it.” 2011 Red-White Spring Game Game Format Each series will start at the 35-yard line Each series will end in a punt, field goal or turnover *format is subject to change 1st quarter - 15 minutes 2nd quarter - 10 minutes Halftime - Approximately 10 minutes 3rd quarter - 15 minutes 4th quarter - 10 minutes (all quarters will be running clock) Game Scoring Offense Scoring Opportunities Touchdown: 6 points Point After Touchdown: 1 point Two-Point Conversion: 2 points Field Goal: 3 points Explosive Play (12+ yard run or a 16+ yard pass): 2 point First Down: 1 point Defense Scoring Opportunities Takeaway for Defensive Touchdown: 10 points Takeaway: 6 points Sack: 2 points Safety: 2 points Three-and-Out: 3 points Drive Stop: 1 point

So, I wasn't able to go to to the game, but I read the P&D's story about the game. Sounds like the offense was clicking, so that's good. I think I am definitely going to enjoy this sophomore transfer from Troy, Anthony Williams. This seems like a big time get for USD. Put him alongside Will Powell for the next two years and that should be a great combo. In terms of the running backs, Marcus Sims played with an injury and ran well from what I know and Ganious had a couple of nice runs, but it was against the USD defensive line to be honest. Speaking of which, it sounded like the line didn't get any kind of a pass rush on. Ed said it was because Wes' offense knew how to neutralize it, but that still concerns me. Dante seemed like he had a good game and Vander Maten has an arm from what it sounds like and is a pretty good runner. It will be interesting to see what he develops into.

I was in attendance last night.
First thoughts, good attendance. As I sat that I was thinking about this past basketball season and how there was more people and more of a buzz for the spring football game than there was for many, if not most, Coyote basketball games this year. That's not a poor reflection on the bball team, that's a poor reflection on Coyote Fans.
There appeared to be a steady stream of people heading over from Pro's and there was quite a few students in attendance. I high fived a co-ed (no pics) leaving the game. Her and her crew were in full-on party mode and were heading back over to a house party post-game. Good for them. Hope they had a safe, fun night. No, I did not go with them, but it would have been fun, I'm sure of that.
As for the game, my first impression is that the intensity was down from previous years. Probably because we have 19 starters returning and guys aren't fighting tooth and nail for starting jobs. That's to be expected and that's fine.
Dante looked good throwing the ball and running the offense. Chris Ganoius looked in top form running the ball and so did Marcus Sims. Two different running styles, Sims being more north/south, they should compliment each other well.
Our offense line is huge and will push some people off the ball. I noticed we were coming out of the I and more power running formations and doing less "spread" stuff. I think our offense runs at its best when we bring the hammer and run the ball. That said, we have a nice group of very talented playmakers at receiver. I expect some fireworks out of them next year.
Really spent a lot of time watching Vander Maten. He needs some work but he has some good, raw skills that can be developed. There were a few miscues but he did throw a nice deep ball down the sidelines from his endzone and hit the receiver in stride.
I am concerned about the defense. Just didn't look sharp last night. In there defense it is very hard to play defense against your own offense. Defense takes intensity and in a setting like the spring game it is hard to ratchet up that intensity.
Couple questions I have are: 1. What was the song the team sang after the game? I'd like to get the words to that (learn the song). I think it would be a good one for the Crazies. 2. The game was filmed by SDPTV, when is it going to air?
All in all it was a nice atmosphere at the Dome last night and I can't wait until this fall.

Thanks for the report. Glad some students attended.
They sang a school song after the Sioux Falls practice last Saturday. I'm guessing it was the same thing. Maybe the athletic department will print the words in the game program and have the words on the display board after the game. That would be a cool thing to have the crowd sing the song with the players after each game.
Not sure on TV showing.

I think you are right, I believe it is the school song. That is real sad that I don't know that.

RJ, could you sing that for us, on camera, and post it on YouTube so I can get an idea of the rythm of the song.
Thanks in advance.
