Bullet points from Coach Lee (paraphrased): - We return a lot of guys, a lot of seniors. That's good for a mid-major program. - It's a wide-open league. Very competitive. - On the road to start the non-con 7 of 9 games. Will test us early.
Q: Can you win the Summit? A: Yeah, but I think there are other teams that can, also.
Q: What can we expect to see from Stan Umude this year? A: He plays extremely hard on every play. He didn't used to do that last year. Last year at the beginning of the year he didn't practice hard and compete hard all the time. In the middle of the year, the light went on for him, and he had a great 2nd half. Now his motor is a lot higher.
I told him: "you can scout a player's skill, or tendencies, but you can't scout a motor." He took that to heart. I no longer have to talk to him about effort. He's grown as a player.
Q: How big will getting Hagedorn back be? A: This year we expect him to be as good or better than any post player in the league. Health-wise he's in great shape. Really, he was healthy towards the middle of last year, but we redshirted him because he had that option. He didn't want to play less than half a hear.
Now he has had a whole year to get used to the system, and his body has changed. He's in better shape. Last year we didn't get anything easy inside. To have that inside presence,... last year we lost twelve games by 7 points or less. We didn't have a go-to player at times. I think Hags will be that go-to. Also Stan and Triston.
Q: Tristan really improved his scoring by the end of the year last year. He also was good rebounding and passing at times. Will he be that "glue" guy for you? A: Yeah. I was proud of him, and all the guys that improved statistically last year. He ended up shooting 80% from the foul line as a point guard. That's big. His 3-point % went way up. He's quick. Had a pretty good assist/turnover ratio. He's a leader for us, and he's gonna run the team.
I'm so pumped for basketball season. For some reason NDSU got the nod as the favorite, but we all know it's USD (we did get six 1st place votes). Just look at the preseason all-conference picks. Umude is preseason player of the year, Simpson is 1st team, and Hagedoorn is 2nd team (underrated for sure). I wasn't going to be shocked at all to see Cody Kelley on that list too.
I feel like unless something has changed, Armstrong is bound to come off the bench. The chance to take a starting spot was there last year and he spent a ton of the early part of the year in the doghouse. He has length, but not sure if Armstrong plays enough defense to start. But I’d be glad to be proven wrong.
So if we are assuming: C Hags PF Stan SF/G TP SG Kelly PG Simpson
That leaves four Forwards Sim Jovic 6-9 Matt Johns 6-8 Hunter Goodrick 6-7 Tasos Kamateros 6-8
Lee said on media day that Sim would back up Hags. Of the other three guys I think Lee has talked the most about Goodrick, so I’ll say he backs up Stan? Could use others as a 3 if going “big”.
For bench guards we have: Armstrong 6-5 Ty Chisom 6-4 Kruz Perrott-Hunt 6-3
Kruz is a true PG, I think he backs up Simpson. Ty is an elite defender, a speed guy and a slasher. I think we use him like Carlton, to shut down their best scoring guard. As a 2 or 3.
Heiman redshirts, koster and AJ greyshirt.
I think you nailed the rotation, except wasn't Kelley more of the PG and Simpson the SG last year? Peterson is going to be the 5th starter unless we've got a lot more in the newcomers than I realize. Hopefully he finally puts it all together for a strong senior season.
I would be suprised if Kruz isnt steadily in the rotation by the end of the year. He should push for minutes at the point or the 2 guard as long as he can get used to the style. He has experience with New Zealand's national team and has a great looking outside stroke which is something we could really use to space the floor to give Hags/Umude space to work.

The 6 that we're familiar with are pretty solid, and plenty of experience.
If we get decent contributions from 7-9, this will be a special team. Looks like we have some candidates in Johns, Chisom, Jovic and the Aussies. Other than Johns, the rest I'm not familiar with, but look forward to seeing them next month!
