I didn't see a standings thread, so I thought what the hell. Now that we are three games into the conference season, it might be a good time to revisit our predictions for the final standings, and playoff bids. Conf-Ntl---team--conf-ovr 1 | #1 | NDSU | 3-0 | 7-0 | 1 | #3 | SDSU | 3-0 | 6-1 | 3 | #7 | ISUr | 2-1 | 5-2 | 4 | #12 | UNI | 2-1 | 4-3 | 5 |
| USD | 2-1 | 3-4 | 6 |
| ISUb | 1-2 | 3-4 | 7 |
| SIU | 1-2 | 3-4 | 8 |
| MSU | 1-2 | 1-5 | 9 | (#33) | YSU | 0-3 | 4-3 | 10 |
| WIU | 0-3 | 0-7 |

USD's remaining schedule:
SIU win @wiu win YSU....win? @ndsu loss SDSU loss
So I'll say we finish 5-3 (6-6). A respectable conference finish, but with four teams ahead of us we would be on the playoff bubble. Probably just outside of Coaches Poll ranking. Right where Indy State found themselves last year.
If we were to somehow pull off an upset of XDSU, we would be a playoff lock, I would think.

Even then it's life on the bubble at best. Without looking around, I'd say there are going to be a lot of 8 win teams and I'm not sure the committee is wise enough to jump a 7 win MVFC team over them.

If we get to 7-5 overall, it means we will be 6-2 in the MVFC with a win over at least one of SDSU or NDSU. That should put us in the playoffs.

Winning 4 of the last 5 with an upset over a top 3 team would get us a ranking and a playoff spot, one would think. The committee hasn’t passed on a ranked MVFC team in many years, if ever.

I’ll say it now. Win Saturday and we go 6-2. Lose and we’ll be 4-4.
I predict 6-2

Wowza. I'm probably late to the playoff discussion, but I just noticed how the committee treated SIU & SDSU. Same MVFC record (SDSU with the head-to-head in 1st conf game at home). SIU went 1-1 in FBS games and beat 7-5 UT Martin during non-con. SDSU best non-con win was Drake (I'm not making that up)and lost 3 of last 5 games
SIU = no playoff SDSU = 7 seed
Is that perception becoming reality? Don't tell me rankings don't matter - they saw who was ranked in the top 5 all year long, and it influences them. If I'm SIU, I'm pretty mad today.

SIU was also without their QB and best defensive player early in the season as well. They should have made the playoffs.
SDS is still worthy of the playoffs but probably shouldn't have gotten a seed, which their fans will agree with.
Truly shows again that a team is better off getting wins over bad teams then they are to schedule tough games and lose. They do not care about quality losses.

That's the reason we need to adjust our scheduling philosophy. The committee is fine with scheduling a weak OOC and racking up wins. We will always have SOS creditability with NDSU, SDSU, UNI, and UND along with the rest of the MVFC slate on our schedule every year.

I think that's pretty much been the consensus. Playing Montana was fun and a great challenge, but if they were Drake our playoff odds would have been much better. Good wins seem to be worth no more than cupcakes in the eyes of the committee.
(Not that it would have mattered for us after things actually played out)
