Sorry to look ahead, but.... once again, we have a short turnaround, and the Jacks game is a lot more impactful and interesting than any of the other Summit games. Here's what Matt Zimmer had to say on Tuesday:
"...I think Oral Roberts matches up better against USD than the Jacks do. The first match-up down in Vermillion was not competitive. I was really blown away by how badly they got outclassed. And frankly, the Jacks just didn't respond to it well. By the end of the game they knew they were the inferior team, and they didn't show a lot of fight...."
"... USD kind-of exposed them... Without Myah Selland, this team is limited. When they play opponents that have a tough time stopping Peyton Burchard and Tagyn Larson down low, then the Jacks are still pretty effective. But against USD that's not gonna be the case."
"... They don't have anyone that can shoot. They really struggle to score (from the arc)."
"They've been able to keep themselves in games by being a good defensive team. A.J. plays to the strengths that they do have. But against a team like USD that's so deep, so balanced, can hurt you in so many different ways, they're gonna score their points. And the Jacks don't have the firepower to keep up with them. I'd be really surprised if this isn't another blowout."

Coach P was also interviewed on Tuesday by KWSN:
Gaskins: What worked so well for you guys in that 83-48 initial win over SDSU, and what do you expect to be different (this time)?Coach P: "We were able to jump out to an early lead in that game. We got the ball inside, got it kicked back outside, hit shots, scored around the rim, ... and on the defensive end I thought we did a really good job, early on, in limiting their opportunities around the rim with their post players.
And honestly, we were probably a little bit fortunate. Because they missed some shots that they probably don't miss at Frost Arena. I think our competitiveness was at a very high level, our execution was very high, ... but we were pretty fortunate that we jumped out to a really great start. And we kept that with us the whole game.
And we saw that with Oral Roberts. There was a major swing in the game. That's pretty typical in college basketball.... So I think it's gonna be another opportunity to compete and get better, and I think it's gonna be a great contest."

Playing in Brookings I wouldn't be surprised if they jacks play out of their minds and take a solid lead in the first quarter, but this should still end up being a solid win for the Yotes*, and will leave the jacks mentally devastated going into the SLT.
*Knock on wood

Just for the sake of argument, I'll go the other direction. I'll say we again get a decent lead in the first quarter, but this time the Jacks are able to grind their way back into the game with defense and the home crowd over the next two quarters, then the Yotes take control in the final minutes with foul attrition disabling the Jacks' best players, and good poise and FT shooting by the Yotes. Who knows, really? Whoever is shooting poorly from the arc will probably be sunk. The way the game is officiated will be an important factor, as well (not biased, just if it is tight or loose).

It wouldn't surprise me if Selland plays on Saturday. Have heard she is no longer wearing a boot. Even if Selland doesn't play, I wouldn't be surprised to see AJ tinker with his starting lineup.
If she doesn't play, and maybe even if she does, I expect SDSU to try slow down the tempo.

Would she even be in BB shape? Interesting story-line to follow.

All things considered, I don't see state pulling out a victory without us giving it to them in some way. I think.

I'd imagine they're going to play a zone and get physical and see if the 'Yotes shoot like they did at Omaha and move the ball like they did at ORU.
The U is literally better at every position. They don't lose unless they give it away. But I can't imagine a team from the U going into Brookings in any sport and being unprepared for a dogfight.

My understanding is that SDSU left their starters in late in a blowout last time out to work on the zone.

It’s a guarantee we see zone in brookings or in Sioux Falls against them. Gotta think we are preparing that way also..

AJ is a sneaky SOB... he'll probably try to play 6 players against us again. Good thing the SL officials caught it last time.

I was hoping to be able to attend my first game at Frost since the early 90's, but it doesn't look like it is going to happen.
My expectation for the game is something more like the late NC/early SL games (and even like the NDSU game last night) - pretty average start/close through 1.5 quarters, but a little burst for a lead at the end of the 2nd quarter, sizeable lead by end of 3, but not out of reach, score gets lopsided in the 4th, and no one can remember a) how did the lead get so big, and b) why weren't the Yotes up by 25 the entire game. The more rotations of players/minutes played, the wider the talent gap gets and the score balloons.

I agree that they are probably going to zone us. I also think it will be similar to our non-conference slate, but more like some of our early games, like the one against Green Bay. Slow and physical and comes down to the Fourth Quarter. Remember they will get the 50/50 calls at Frost, and that plays to their advantage if they want a slugfest. I hope we don't overlook this one, although I still think that we are the far more talented team.

I'm sure that AJ has already been on the phone trying to line up the officiating crew from Oral Roberts.
