I know politics is off limits on this board, but this topic transcends politics. SB40 - "authorize the Board of Regents to contract for the construction of an Allied Health Facility and the demolition of Julian Hall and the Julian Hall Addition to the University of South Dakota, to make an appropriation therefor, and to declare an emergency." This Senate bill calls for approx $5 Million of the $22 Million needed to fund a new Health Sciences Building on the USD campus. The money would be spent to tear down Julian Hall - current location of majority of Health Sciences classes, constructed in 1950s as a dormitory - and be replaced by a new building that would house and increase capacity of all health science classes. Health science majors are the largest demand of new students coming to USD. Please consider contacting your state Senators and Reps to urge them to support the funding of this new education building. There are several legislative members who are opposed to supporting this building. Click here to find your current legislators: sdlegislature.gov/Legislators/Who_Are_My_Legislators/default.aspx?CurrentSession=TrueUpdate: President Gestring just informed the committee that SD Legislature approval of the $5 Million unlocks a guaranteed $4.5 Million private donation for assistance in funding this education building. It would also unlock additional donations of money for very expensive and highly specialized equipment for training of students in specific healthcare courses.

Update: SB40 passed the Senate committee 12-4 with a recommendation to pass. First hurdle completed. Now on to the full Senate for a vote, then the gauntlet that is the House...
Please consider contacting your District Senator and Representatives to urge passage of SB40.
