VERMILLION, S.D. -- South Dakota men's basketball will face North Dakota on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Summit League Tournament. Tipoff inside the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
The Game
The Coyotes and Fighting Hawks are meeting for the third time this season and for the first time ever in the conference tournament. This will be the 192nd all-time meeting between the two squads with North Dakota holding a 99-92 advantage in the series.
The Coyotes (20-11, 10-6 SL)
Tyler Hagedorn leads the team with 18.1 points per game while Stanley Umude is averaging 16.7 points per game. Umude scored a season-high 28 points against Western Illinois and then followed that up with a 27-point effort against Oral Roberts.
Cody Kelley (10.9), Triston Simpson (12.0) and Tyler Peterson (11.3) round out the starting five that all average in double figures. USD is the only Summit League school that has all five starters average in double figures.
As a team, the Yotes average 79.9 points per game on 49.4 percent shooting from the field and 39.0 percent from beyond the arc.
The Fighting Hawks (13-17, 7-9)
North Dakota has four players that average double-figure scoring led by Marlon Stewart with 18.9 points per game on 44 percent shooting from the field. Filip Rebraca is second on the team with 14.6 points per game while De'Sean Allen-Eikens averages 13.8 points per game. Rounding out the double-figure scoring for the Fighting Hawks is Kienan Walter with 11.6 points a game.
As a team, UND shoots 46 percent from the field and 34 percent from deep. North Dakota averages 75.7 points per game while allowing 75 points a game.
Recapping The Season Series
South Dakota and North Dakota are matching up for the third time this season. The Coyotes swept the season series with an 82-68 victory in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and a 77-67 win on senior day inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center this past weekend.
The Coyotes have won all four meetings as Summit League foes by an average margin of 13.2 points. This season, the Yotes have averaged 79.5 points while allowing 67.5 points against the Fighting Hawks. In their two games against UND, USD has shot 51.4 percent from the field despite a 32-percent effort from beyond the arc.
Per usual, the Coyotes made and attempted a high amount from the charity stripe in both meetings against North Dakota, making an average of 20.5 makes from the line for 80 percent (41-of-51). A big key to the Coyotes' success against the Fighting Hawks is the ability to create turnovers and force them into bad decisions. In the two games thus far, the Yotes have forced an average of 17.5 turnovers while getting six steals on average. In the game inside the SCSC, the Coyotes converted 15 turnovers into 21 points while forcing 20 turnovers for 17 points in North Dakota.
Peterson has been the go-to guy for the Coyotes against the Fighting Hawks after averaging 15 points in the two meetings on 52.9 percent from the field and recording six assists. Peterson also went 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. Three other Coyotes have averaged double digits against the Fighting Hawks in Hagedorn (14.5), Simpson (14.0) and Umude (13.5).
On the other side of the ball, Stewart has been the catalyst for UND, scoring 23 at home against the Coyotes and 19 in Vermillion. Stewart has taken 15 or more shots in both games and six or more 3-pointers. At home, Stewart went 9-of-18 from the field and 2-of-7 from deep while only grabbing three rebounds. In Vermillion, Stewart shot 8-of-16 from the field before fouling out late in the game.
Allen-Eikens has averaged 16.5 points in the two meetings while Rebraca has averaged 13 points in the two games.
