First time a pole vaulter has ever been awarded this honor. I wonder if we'll ever see the likes of anything like this again in South Dakota. Simply been an amazing career and it's been truly a pleasure to watch him compete.

A goal of mine at the start of the school year was to see Chris vault in person. Given the cancellation of the outdoor season, I'm so happy to have seen him vault in the Dome on Feb. 8. He had a great day, but came up just shy of Derek Miles' facility record. If he's not already, he could go on to become the most accomplished Coyote ever at his craft. It's been a pleasure to follow him and his teammates. Pole Vault U., indeed!
As elcoyote noted, Chris is the first vaulter to win this award. The women's version of it was also announced today. Interestingly, it, too, went to a vaulter -- a young woman from the Washington Huskies.

I remember seeing the news of his commitment to USD a few years back. The all-time US high school record holder is coming to USD? I assumed that I just didn't quite understand because there was no way that about the best recruit imaginable was coming to Vermillion. Then he won a national championship as a freshman and my imagination ran wild.
I don't think anyone would be surprised to see him up on the olympic podium someday. It doesn't hurt to have a medalist as your coach and mentor.
